Posted October 17, 200519 yr Hi Daz, In answer to your question, I have contacted an Avian Veterinarian who I know. He advises that there are many toxic plants but in relation to Fruit & Vegetables, apparently only Avocado is definitely toxic and under no circumstances should it be given to any variety of parrot. I know that chocolate is toxic and believe that coffee is also. I hope this helps
October 17, 200519 yr Apparently, cooked potatoes (including sweet potatoes) are okay, preferably steamed or boiled but without the skin. All I can gather about onions is that one normally doesn't feed these to budgies. So I wouldn't do it to be on the safe side.
October 17, 200519 yr I have been looking through the old Posts and have found some information. Guess What. Fresh Vegetables Even budgies with a complicated taste concerning food often are mad about fresh vegetables. Healthy sorts of vegetables: Broccoli Brussels sprouts Cabbage turnip Carrot Celery stalks Chard Chicory Chinese Cabbage Corn (milky & soft) Cucumber Curly kale Egg plant Endive Fennel Green peas (in their shells) Green peppers Iceberg lettuce Jerusalem artichoke Kohlrabi Lamb's lettuce Potato (cooked) Pumpkin Radish Sorrel Red beet (fresh) Spinach Tomato Zucchini Please never offer the following stuff to your budgies: Avocado (too fatty and toxic for birds near kernel) Fruit Some birds who don't know fruit do not eat it or are even frightened when it is offered to them. But if you keep on serving sweet apples or pears to your parrots, some day even the most stubborn fruit ascetic will like the taste. Another advantage of fresh fruit is that it brings fun into the everyday life of a pet bird. Budgies love to play with their food as you can see in the photo on the left. Derrick nibbles his apple with great fun. Healthy sorts of fruit: Apple Apricot Asian pear Banana Blackberry Blackcurrant Black Elder Blood orange Blueberry Canteloupe melon Cape gooseberry Carambola Cherimoya Cherry Clementine Custard apple Dried date1 Fig (fresh) Gooseberry Grape Grenadine Guava Honeydew melon Huckleberry Japanese Persimmon Kiwifruit Loquat Lychee (Litchi) Mandarin Mango Melon2 Nectarine Opuntia fruit Orange Papaya Peach Pear Persimmon, Japanese Pineapple Plum Quince Rambutan Raspberry Redcurrant Strawberry Tangerine Tamarillo (Tree tomato) Yellow Plum 1) You can get sugar free dried dates in food stores that can be served to budgies as a sweet. Please do not give it to them too often because it contains a lot of fructose and your parakeets would become too fat. 2) Any kind of melon is a highly appreciated goody for all pet bird species. From water melon to honeydew melon and cantaloupe melon, everything can be served to your feathered friends. Please never offer the following fruit to your budgies: Avocado (too fatty and toxic for birds near kernel) Fresh dates (they contain too much tanning agent) Grapefruit, Pomelo (too much citric acid and bitter) Kumquats (too acidic) Passion fruit (nearly all sorts contain too much citric acid) Japanese persimmons, unripe (contain too much tanning agent) Lemon or Lime (too much citric acid) By Birds On Line Edited October 17, 200519 yr by daz
October 17, 200519 yr Very helpful, Daz! Looks like you answered your own question. Here's another link of safe and dangerous plants as well. http://www.mytoos.com/harmfulplants.shtml Edited October 17, 200519 yr by eterri
October 17, 200519 yr I've also heard that some seeds, stones and pips of certain fruit and veg can be dangerous. I will try and find the info to post.
October 17, 200519 yr I just saw a site today that specifically mentioned what seeds are bad and now I can't find it to save my life! I'll keep looking.
October 18, 200519 yr There was a really long list somewhere on here of safe fruits and vegetables. I'll have a quick look and see if i can find it. http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....findpost&p=5418
