Posted October 16, 200519 yr Hi I am new here and I wondered if anyone has come across a budgie like Daisy..I have had her a few months now and when I 1st saw her I felt sorry for her as she looked so sad in the pet shop with her head hanging low and I quickly came to realise that this is how Daisy sits she very rarely puts her head up in the correct position and looks at me under the perch it is most odd and I do wonder what efect this will have on her posture as she gets older..she is a yellow albino with the biggest eyes I have every seen on a budgie..when the light catches her eyes I can see they are red...the other day Billy and her where having a sleep with their heads tucked over their backs and Daisy had hers to one side but I could tell whet she was trying to do..she is also the most non verbal laid back bird I have come across she has a love interest Jack who seems to feed her quite a bit other wise she very rarely can be seen eating and drinking , I know it may seem a odd question but we have special needs humans is it possible that Daisy could be like this..I hate to ask that as she is dead sweet its just that she is like no budgie I have ever known..thank you..Linda Hope this picture works..Daisy is in the background
October 16, 200519 yr It could be some sort of neurological disorder or a result of some type of injury. I had a budgie that got its head trapped in a cage door while I was out one day and for a while she wasn't able to lift her head either. Fortunately, she recovered but it could have been a much different story. How often does she lift her head all the way up and what happens then? It needs to be determined whether this is just some sort of defect or if it's an injury that is actually causing her pain. It would be best to have her seen by an avian vet as soon as possible so you can get a better idea of what you're dealing with. Then, you'll be able to do whatever is needed to make her life more comfortable. Also, her mutation is called lutino. Edited October 16, 200519 yr by eterri
October 16, 200519 yr Thank you so much for your quick answer...not sure if she has been injured...the breeder is a local guy who seems to be very caring...she was like this when I 1st saw her..how often does she put her head up not often if I am cleaning the cage or putting food in or when she is moving positions in the cage she puts her head up then but not for long she looks okay when upright but then when I saw her atempting to tuck her head on her back thats when it realy hit me all was not well...she flys good too we were amazed 1st time out of the cage and she never banged into anything she is the best flyer of my 4 ...I think I need to get her looked at by someone how do you find a avian vet...so she is a lutino neat...Linda
October 16, 200519 yr She's very pretty. At this point, my main concern would be making sure she's not in pain. Otherwise, I'm sure she can lead a happy life despite her disability. It was so good of you to take her in and seek help in makig her life better. Here are a couple of links to help find avian vets in the UK: http://www.parrotpassionsuk.com/Advice/Uk_Avian_Vets.htm http://www.theparrotsocietyuk.org/avian-vets.shtml You could also try calling your local dog/cat vet to ask them if they know if the nearest avian specialist. October 16, 200519 yr Hello! What a fascinating story and budgie. I've never come across anything like this before,it will be interesting to see what a vet says though.
October 16, 200519 yr Very unusual, I've known a few budgies who hang upside down on perches, but never for long amounts of time. It could be a behavioural problem, an injury or an illness, a good avian vet will be able to help. Ask the breeder if they know of any problems when he/she was a baby.
October 16, 200519 yr i once saw a budgie that sat like that at my local large chain pet store. the birds there didnt look in the best of condition but the one that sat with its head like that really didnt look in very good shape at all. if she is non vocal and laid back this is a sign that she isnt well and needs to be seen by a vet as soon as possible. good luck and lets hope she makes a full recovery.
October 16, 200519 yr It's highly possible that she had some injury at the breeders home that he is unaware of, as it could be something quite quick, like flying into the bars of the cage. I'm glad she's found a home with someone caring like you. I've just been reading about Jack, what a lovely fella he sounds! Please let us know what the vet says
