Posted October 16, 200519 yr I have a budgie he is about 3 years old and has just gotten over a slight cold. The symptoms included sneezing and green runny droppings which is still there. He has also lost alot of his feathers which i know is usual but he is also losing alot of his flight feathers which has unabled him to fly completley and is also causing him alot of stress and more feather loss. He is usually very friendly but now is quiet and doesnt like to be touched and doesnt like to be acknowledged much either. He is eating and drinking completley fine. I am wondering is there anything wrong because my vet is unable to diagnose anything and if there isnt, is there anything that i can do to help him through this stressful time????
October 16, 200519 yr I have to say that I think your vet has overlooked something here, your budgie doesn't sound very well at all. If you possibly can then please try and take him to see an avian vet or at least one that specialises or has an interest in birds. not easy I know! For now just make sure he is warm and out of any draughts. I'm sure someone else will be more helpful for you very soon!
October 16, 200519 yr I agree with Julie, he should be seen by an avian vet. At the very least his poos should have been tested. With birds, they don't show they are ill until they are very ill, so please take your little one to an avian vet as soon as you can. In the mean time, like Jules said, keep him warm, out of draughts and as quiet as possible
October 16, 200519 yr Welcome to the forum nina. It sounds like he is going through a very heavy moult, like the good advice already been given kept him warm, away from drafts and try and keep him in a constant temperature. Also limit his time in light as this can trigger excessive moults. The runny droppings are a bit of a concern, if you're not able to get to see an avian vet immediately then get a Johnsons Avol Mixture (M025) as an interim fix from a local pet shop.
October 16, 200519 yr the droppings could be caused by a bacterial or viral infection in the intestines or possibly a parasite. definitely needs to be seen by an avian vet asap. although most things would show up in a faecal test, which the ordinary dog/cat vet should have done anyway. something has been over-looked. personally i would avoid medicating the bird yourself and wait for a proper diagnosis. as long as the feathers look normal and do not have a sheath covering them partly, blood stained tips or any discolouration it just sounds like a heavy moult. this might also be adding to his problems as birds are stressed during this time anyway. good luck and dont forget to let us know how you get on.
