Posted October 9, 200519 yr I brought Cazaly in yesterday afternoon, and here it is lunchtime and he still hasn't eaten. Any suggestions? I have given him fresh grass, seed, millet. Doesn't seem overly scared, just annoyed that he can't fly like he can in the aviary. If he doesn't eat soon I will have to put him back out, I am scared he will starve. He must be 7 or 8 weeks old now.
October 9, 200519 yr Maybe you could cover his cage with something dark but lighweight for a while. Sometimes if they can't see what is making them nervous, they feel calmer. Keep him in a nice quiet place and check on him in a couple of hours. Also, are you positive he's not eating or is he just not eating while you're watching?
October 9, 200519 yr Thanks terri, I'll try covering him again. He is definately not eating, I can tell by the seed that none have been husked or anything. In fact it doesn't appear he has gone into the seed at all. Maybe I will scatter some on the floor, he might not know they are there - despite my guided tour of his cage yesterday!

Good idea sprinkling some on the floor of his cage, if there is no illness he will eat when he gets hungry enough, he won't starve himself to death.
October 9, 200519 yr He's not eating yet, but he's on the floor, so maybe he will eat soon. He might have had a nibble at the grass seeds put in, he's knocked those to the floor, so maybe he has had a go at them. I'm trying to keep away to let him settle down, but tonight I might put him next to Winkie. I wasn't going to, as I wanted to tame them both first, but I would rather Cazaly felt safe and secure than be tame. if that makes sense.
October 9, 200519 yr I was so paranoid when i separated Blinkie from Razzo. I thought he wasn't eating at all either but as soon as i covered him he emptied the food dish.
October 9, 200519 yr He's had a little nibble at the seeds on the floor (I put some in a dish on the floor, and scattered some), I'll see how he is in the morning!
October 9, 200519 yr Don't judge whether he's eating enough on crop size either because budgies feeding themselves never seem to have full crops.
October 9, 200519 yr Thanks for the tip! If he hasn't eaten overnight he will have to go back out, surely he can't last too long without food?
October 9, 200519 yr Thanks for the tip! If he hasn't eaten overnight he will have to go back out, surely he can't last too long without food? I'm sure if there's food around, on the floor, in several feeders etc then he won't starve himself to death. Our second budgie took a long time to find his food. We fed him by hand (holding feeder up to him) a few times to ensure he kept his strength until he got more settled in his cage.
October 9, 200519 yr I'll try that tomorrow. currently he has 2 seed feeders, millet on the side, grass seeds, seed on the floor and seed in a lid on the floor. If he can't find food amongst all that maybe he needs little budgie glasses?
October 9, 200519 yr maybe he needs little budgie glasses? Closest thing I could find http://cgi.ebay.ca/BUDGERIGAR-BUDGIE-BRAND...1QQcmdZViewItem
October 9, 200519 yr I think all of mine have taken at least a day to start eating and moving around the cage and would normally do so when they thought nobody was watching. He'll probably be fine. I think it takes a while for them to feel comfortable enough (then they never stop eating )
October 9, 200519 yr Well, there was a very few husks this morning, I'll see if he eats whilst I take my little one to the doctor.
October 10, 200519 yr You could tell he hadn't been in the food bowls, but now I'm back from the doctor (they thought my little one had diabetes, but he doesn't thankfully), I can tell he's been into the lid on the floor, he's moved the seeds around, I assume he's eaten! Thankfully. And, today, Winkie has decided that millet is not poisonous, and seems to be enjoying it!
October 10, 200519 yr And, today, Winkie has decided that millet is not poisonous, and seems to be enjoying it! You know, it took Matisse a bit over a month to discover the pleasure of eating millet! And guess who had to show him it wasn't poisonous? Yep, Lucky! He was scared to death of the spray millet I kept in his cage (even when I cut it into a really small piece), but when he saw Lucky eat it, he started eating it too as if there was no tomorrow! (Laughing out loud)! Budgies are weird sometimes... :(Laughing out loud):
