Posted October 2, 200519 yr Pigwidgeon has been acting strange recently and she's had diarrhea for a couple of days, we went to the pet shop that knows a lot about animals and they said feed her lots of dry foods to help dry the poo out, we did that but she's still got odd green poo and today we caught her kind of spitting the food out, she was regurgitating seed and it was really strange she doesn't seem her normal twirping self at the moment and we're going to try and get her to the vet tomorrow, is there anything I can do for now? Thanks
October 2, 200519 yr is there a white portion to the poop at all? if the poop is all brown/green or a very bright green colour he needs to see a vet asap. especially if she isnt eating but regurgitating or not actually digesting the seeds. you will be able to tell if this is the case by looking if there is any powder at the bottom of the seed pot she is eating from. it could be a number of things, unfortunately many budgie illnesses all have the same kind of symtoms. do you have an avian vet in your area? they will be able to run some tests and identify and treat the problem. untill then, keep a desk lamp next to her cage and partially cover it with a blanket to keep her warm. also try clipping her favourite food to the cage bars to try and tempt her to eat something. October 2, 200519 yr I also noticed that you have 2 budgies, do you have a spare cage? Because it's really important that you separate them. At the vet mention that Pigwidgeon has been with another bird and the vet will probably suggest medicating both of them.
October 3, 200519 yr Thanks for your reply's, I've been monitoring them today and pigwidgeon seems a bit better, she was actually tweeting a bit today and her poo seems a bit more normal... We've booked a vets appointment for her but the closest one isn't until saturday it's ridiculous how full up the vets is. I'm hoping pigwidgeon will just get over her cold and be better... if it gets worse again we'll definately see if there is any other vets that will be able to help us quicker.
October 3, 200519 yr If it's possible, try to find another avian vet now. I was made to wait for an appointment once and my budgie didn't make it. It's scary how fast they crash and once you notice symptoms, it's often pretty serious. I can understand if it's not possible but if there's the slightest chance you can fit her in at another vet sooner please try for it. Good luck!
October 3, 200519 yr Keep her warm and away from draughts. It is very important to see a vet ASAP if symptoms return as budgies can go downhill very very quickly. If you have problems finding a vet then just ask and someone will provide details of alternatives.
October 5, 200519 yr I've looked in the yellow pages and there doesnt seem to be any avian vets around here. She seems a bit more stable, however she has been scratching alot and there are lots of feathers at the bottom of the cage. Do you think it could be some type of mites or something? Thanks.
October 5, 200519 yr You'll probably have to do a little traveling to get to an avian vet. Try this link? http://www.theparrotsocietyuk.org/avian-vets.shtml If not, try a google search for avian vets in your area. The itching and feathers could be due to molting. How old is your budgie? Molting wouldn't cause the other symptoms though so hopefully you can find a vet to help out there. Oh! Also, call your local dog/cat vets and have them refer to the nearest avian vet. If they know of one, go there. If not, you might have to settle for the most bird-knowledgeable regular vet you can find. :/ But don't let them talk you into taking your bird to them unless there is just NO way you can get to an avian vet.

October 6, 200519 yr She is about 4 years old I think. If our budgies don't mind sitting in a car for half a hour then it is possible we could get her to an avian vets. However, last time we took our budgies to that vets they seemed to know quite a lot about budgies. I think there is a small animals specialist there or something.
October 6, 200519 yr Half an hour is fine, mine have to stay for an hour or more in the car so that's actually pretty close! Definitely try for the avian vets. When they say "small animal" they usually refer to dogs and cats and such. An exotics specialist would be more likely to know more about birds. Avian is definitely best.
October 10, 200519 yr We rang the avian vets and they said the avian vet has left. So for the meanwhile we took Pigwidgeon to the local vets and they said she could be moulting and have picked up a virus while in the process (their ammune processes are low) or it could be something worse. We've been given some powder stuff to mix with the water for her. I hope she does get better, she seems to have stopped moulting now.
October 14, 200519 yr Try cold tea for loose stools. Do you use probiotic? If not start to as this encourages the good bacteria in their gut. You could use a product called Spark which is a pick me up. Warmth is most times the best medicine. I have a pet store near me who has a visiting vet once a month and you can usualy ring him for advice. Maaybe there is a local pet shop near you that can offer the same help. In most Pets at Home stores they also have avian vets so try one of them. Hope this helps

I've seen the vets place in a PetsAtHome in Parkgate near Southampton, don't know how it works though. Never heard of Spark, anyone know who the manufacturer is?
October 16, 200519 yr We found a vets for rare animals and took our budgies there and they are trained to look after budgies too. She gave Pigwidgeon a good look and said it was a respiritual problem and we have been given some baytril medicine to give to her once a day. It seems to be working a bit. Also the vet said she's a bit thin so we're just about to go out to the pet shop to search for some food that will tempt her. I'll try and look for some Spark. Thanks for all your help everybody.
October 16, 200519 yr Try some millet this can be quite fattening, don't over do it though as you don't want to put your budgie off it's normal food. Good luck with finding Spark, I haven't been able to find out any further details about it yet.

Yep, we've got them some millet, she seems a lot healthier now, she isn't even fluffed up I think all she needed was some warmth, nice food and attention!
October 18, 200519 yr That's good news. I did manage to find out about Spark, it's made by the Birdcare Company http://www.birdcareco.com/English/Product_...s/sickbird.html
