Posted September 30, 200519 yr Hi I've had a buidgie for over 2 years now and its been lonely since and when ever i tried to talk or put my finger near it to pat it it usually gets angry and bites.. Just today i realised it was so bored and i felt sorry for it, went and bought it a friend.. I let the other budgie fly out of the cage to the curtains while i was gone. When I brang the new budgie the other one didnt even care or bother fighting? They are both in the same cage now and they arent fighting, or speaking or looking at each other. The new one is half asleep and the current one is just sitting there. Whats with that, i expected something more surprising! Should I just let them take there time. I think they are both girls. Two more things, my first budgie keeps on biting itself like its itchy. What spray would you recommend me use for this situation. and when it breathes its tail feather goes up and down.. Is there something with that, never seen it before. Thanks hope someone can give some help Cheers
September 30, 200519 yr Hello-nice to hear about your budgies. The very first thing you should have done was to put the new one into quarantine. It may have an illness that you don't know about yet which it could pass on to your other one. Also if your budgie is itching and has a problem then that could be passed on to the new one. This all means that you could end up with two sets of vets bills instead of just one.
September 30, 200519 yr Ive also heard that tail bobbing when breathing could be a sign of illness too. Saying that my Patty has always done that and she is healthy , well apart from her attitude hehe!
September 30, 200519 yr Ive also heard that tail bobbing when breathing could be a sign of illness too. Saying that my Patty has always done that and she is healthy , well apart from her attitude hehe! yeh it is having respiratory problems / breathing problems the vet said, might take it to a 24 hour vet now.
September 30, 200519 yr Please if your able to take hime/her at once I would recommend it and make sure you keep them as warm as possible. Please keep us informed. Hope everything is okay.
September 30, 200519 yr Congratulations on the new budgie. Yes, first and foremost please separate these two birds for quarantine for at least thirty days. During this time you can monitor the new one for illness and since he/she is already showing signs, you'll be able to keep track of his/her progress better as well as get him checked out by a vet. When it's time to introduce them it should be done gradually so that your first budgie doesn't feel her territory is being invaded and just to make sure you can feel comfortable with them being together while you aren't around supervising. Don't use any spray on your budgie (it might have mites) unless it's something given to you by an *avian* vet. The products in pet stores are no good, they can even be harmful. An avian vet will be able to give you something safe to use. Please try to get the bird to an avian vet rather than a regular one. Avian vets are educated and equipped enough to treat your bird properly.
October 1, 200519 yr thanks for the help guys yes ive seperated the new one with the current ill one. I took it to a 24 hour vet yesterday. As the vet said they do not specialise in birds or avian they still had knowledge in few areas, they said it is having respitory problems and as it was still actively jumping around etc it still has its life. It has alot of dander and there highly suspicious of its air sack. that may need to be cleaned. THey couldnt supply medicine or nothing because they are not 100% with birds so they did not want to risk. They referred me to an avian vet on burwood highbury road but there is no room for appointments. Can someone please give me some lists of AVIAN VETS THAT MAY HELP in Melbourne areas PLEASE!!! Most vets ive called today (90%) dont help with birds and its making me upset.
October 1, 200519 yr Oh dear, I'm sorry I can't help, but I can't believe they won't take a bird on! that's so wrong! Have you tried the yellow pages, or ring the vet back and ask for some other avian vets (maybe even let them know how they wouldn't see you so they don't refer people their again). I'm sure someone will come up with some names, but avian vets unfortunately are few and far between
