White bread?

I was flipping through a book called, "Parakeets; a complete Pet Owners Manual," by Annette Wolter. I stumbled across a page listing potentional dangers and toxins to budgies and to my great surprise, I read a sentence that stated that even small amounts of white bread is harmful to budgies! I never thought this was true. (The book is 23 years out-dated however.)

If this is infact true, is white bread harmful to other birds as well? I just fed my Quaker, Gonzo, some pieces of white bread last week, and he seems fine. But im still very curious....

Oh I hope not, my lorikeet loves a honey sandwich!

i think its because of what they use to bleach the bread white and theres no point in feeding it its got almost no nutritional value at all removing the outside of the grains and then bleaching it like that. to be on the safe side i would just use whole grain bread ( the brown stuff with all the seeds still in it its just as good and has more nutrients hiding among it)

Oh yuk, I hate that bread! As i only give it as a treat, when she's eying off my sandwich! (Laughing out loud) I suppose I just won't eat where she can see me!

A few years ago, when I had to have an Operational perseager for Cancer that was all I was allowed to have for three days.

By the way.. All clear -_-

I'm pleased it was clear for you Daz! Otherwise you wouldn't be here for me to go like this : to -_-:

Ah Lin thanks for your thoughts  but -_-: :D

White bread is fine, just don't feed it to the birds every day. We feed the neighbourhood magpies, doves, wrens, finch & crows & we haven't killed any.

I also give my birds a small amount of bread once a week/fortnight & they love it. Just like with us, feed in moderation.

What about toasted white bread?

The budgies also get my crust from toast, bread/toast is always gone within half hour o me giving it to them.

I give = half of 1 crust from 1 side of bread/toast per pair birds. My Bourkes also love it.

okay thanks for your input guys. Just wanted to clear that up. :(

I'll try some whole grain bread and see if they like it. :)

SB used to have toast every morning and he lived until he was nine years old. If he didn't get his toast he would shout until he got it. :(

Star would eat a whole loaf if we let him. He has a nibble of home made fresh bread and toast now and then as a treat. I have heard that large amounts can swell up inside birds and cause problems, therefore giving in moderation is recommended. :feedbirds:

Good point Featheredpets. I might try a little with the avairy birds, they will try anything.

toasting the bread is said to be the best was to give it to them
