Posted September 21, 200519 yr Hi peeps... not too sure on this, but is there a special type of paint i will need if i wanted to repaint a bird cage?? i have one that is real rusty and want to clean it up. thanks in advance. Bhups
September 21, 200519 yr I don't think you should try repainting a rusty cage, it doesn't seem safe to me. Getting a new cage seems to be the best bet to me, IMO.

If however you have to use the old one then you would have to find a paint that does not contain lead or zinc and a variety of other materials which are toxic to budgies. This could be quite hard and I don't know of any suppliers.
September 21, 200519 yr I know some people repaint their rat cages with something called Japlac, which you can get in the UK so you might want to look out for that.
September 21, 200519 yr rust can make a budgie very seriously ill - i think a brand new cage would be a safe option. metal that is severely damaged by rust really isnt worth salvaging. you would have to make sure all of the rust is completely gone before painting and even then you will have a hard time finding a bird safe paint that covers the metal bars evenly. my advice is to throw it out.
September 21, 200519 yr I agree, it's MUCH safer to just get a new cage. If the paint flakes off the bird will get at the rust. So even if you find a safe paint the budgie is still at risk.
September 22, 200519 yr Your bird I bet means alot to you, so I would not put it's life at risk in this way. If you can, buy a new or a good condition secondhand cage.
September 23, 200519 yr Bhups, if you are going to do it. Take the metal back all the way to clean metal. Then use a non toxic water base paint. I would use black. But before you paint, no rust can be left. Thinking of all that work, I'd get a new cage.

September 25, 200519 yr Just for interest, what would you treat a rusty part of an aviary with? I know you can buy products that will stop the rust. I was wondering if I used this, and painted over it with bird friendly paint, if that would be okay. One panel of my aviary has rust on it, not bad, but I'd like to fix it.
