Some Budgie advice needed :)

hi everyone

I have just signed up to the forum and this is my first post..

I have recently bought two budgies(about a month ago) 4 months after my other two budgies died after a mysterious illness...was so sad took a while to get over..

here is a picture of the 2 cuties >>>> http://img117.imageshack.us/my.php?image=birds8qe.jpg

But now with my new budgies i wanted some help from you guys. I have included a picture of my two birds because i need some help with identifying the sex of the white/blue budgie (called Pipina) on the right. I know that males and females are identified by the colour of their ceres brown being female and blue male but with the white one I am just unsure because the cere is white and light blue. Also the behavour of the white and blue is more like a female.. always calling the other budgie when they are seperated, cleaning the other budgie (which is slightly younger i think) but yet the colour of the cere points to it being a male budgie.

There is also an issue with the white one being quite aggressive towards the other budgie....when the white one is eating it keeps pecking at the other one when he tries to eat at the same time... the white one also sometimes just jumps at him for no reason to drive him away. The behavour isnt that aggressive that they fight and pull feathers out or really hurt each other..its more the case of just being more dominant (because its older)and wanting to be alone...

I have tried seperating them and placing them into cages in different rooms but then the white/blue budgie just keeps calling and climbing all over the cage and wont eat anything so i always have to put them back together into one cage and then they both eat happily......

Then when it gets darker and i get them ready to go to sleep the white/blue budgie becomes aggressive again and will try and drive the male away even if hes sitting quietly on a perch and they chase all over the cage..... it also pecks violently at anything that moves being a towel, hand, swing other budgie which got me thinking maybe the white/blue budgie has bad vision at when light level drops and is afraid of everything moving around it. Like yesterday for example i was putting them into the hall where its dark and quiet around 18:30 and the white/blue budgie started pecking violently at the cloth that i have placed over the cage, when i try to place my hand into the cage it will try and attack me too (doesnt do this during the day just when light level gets low) even when the swing was swinging it was just going mad at it.... was even having a go at the wall as i was sliding the cage into place....

the behavour of the white/blue budgie "Pipina" is very strange and i cant pinpoint why its so strange, my first thoughts are that its a female and just want to be more dominant over the younger male...normally they get on ..cleaning each other flying around the room with each other but there are moments when the white/blue budgie will just turn on the other one......

any help on this would be appreciated...

thank you

oooo funky smileys here :fear :parrot: :feedbirds: :):)

Hi and welcome.

Its safe to say Pipina is a girl with a girl attitude. Ive a couple of girls that behave that way its perfectly normal.

All my budgies hate me going in their cages when they are ready for bed but then again would you like to be messed around when youve just got settled in bed hehehe.

Hope this helps.

hehe i thought its a female because of the behavour and if i compared it to the one that died it looked the same but only was yellow.....

i read that females are generaly more protective and slightly more frightened but they are both tamed quite well..both when alone will let me stroke them, kiss them on their wings, back, head etc sit on my finger and chirp away ...the white/blue "pipina" is slightly always more aware that the male "ferdicek" but it relatively calm just the later evening hours she can be a right pain.... got a nasty peck at my tongue the other day.. AUCH :):

Ferdicek is really young sily bird always exploring and playing and very curious...

love them both to bits nevertheless.... always aim to give them the best quality of life even though it will never replace the Australian plains.

thx for the reply...

have you got any pictures of your budgies around? if love to see them :)

Hello there,

You have two beautiful birdies there.....have you names for them yet or would you like some help hehehehe :)

Looking at the cere and by the behaviour I agree with Boomberry that you're white/blue budgie is a girl.

My newbie Kylie was exactly the same in that just before bed time she became very bitey but I have just been ignoring the behavior. Also, I was given some good advice on here just today actually

Each time you clean them make sure you put the cage back differently and also keep the cage below eye level. I was already doing these things with Patch (my other girl) and she has never been bitey towards me and even just in the last couple of weeks Kylie has settled down now.

I've just brought them a new cage to live in and I've made sure that I have 4 feeders so there is no fighting but they still always want to eat out of the pot the other one is using and there is a bit of a squabble, but I think it's all normal.

Don't seperate them if it makes them anxious.....I kept mine seperate only because I didn't have a big enough cage for them and since they have been living together I can tell how much happier they are (despite the odd quibble). Also, now I have been able to let them out together for longer they are much happier and less bitey....do yours get plenty of free flight time too?

Welcome to the site anyway...it's lovely to see new birdies!!!

Let us know on the names eh! :fear

names are:

white/blue: Pipina

turqoise one: Ferdicek

these are very popular Czech names for budgies in the czech republic.....

i thought about calling the white/blue "Cloudy" though but then changed my mind even though she looks like the daily sky :)

thanks for the info will have a read once my dinner is cooked :fear

Hello everyone,

Its a long time since I have last posted here. I thought would give an update on my two feathered friends.

It is going to be 2 years in August since I got my two budgies and I thought I would upload a photo of what they look like now....

As I didn't want to create a new thread I thought I would re-use my old one.

Photo of them just few months old:

Photo of them now 2 years on:

Had to put the photo's to links as they are too big for the forum they need to be sized down to 450x450

they are the best in the world, love them to bits.

I had to change your photos to links as they were too big for our forum requirements....use photobuckets edit feature and select the email/website size and repost if you like.

Cheers kaz

yeah you got the photo's to work :( great job

Welcome back! I like your living room setup. :D I'm sure the birds love it too. Do they get on any better now, or is Pipina still hormonal, LOL?

I'm sure you have a screen in, but it doesn't look like it -it looks like the birds could fly out.....! The window glass is so clean! How do you manage not to have poop splattered all over it?? Tell me your secret!

  • Author

Hi rainbow, their living room setup is made from a number of sticks and branches that I could find outside. I then hammered and tied it all together so that they have some real wood perches to sit on. There is now screen, they have the freedom to the whole living room, I have even hammed a perch into every corner of the room so that can they fly about and sit where they like. Their cage is situated at the opposite end of the room. The budgies also like to peel the bark of the branches, its a good exercise for their beaks, also keeps their beaks from getting too long. In the last 2 years I haven't had to clip their beaks once. I replace the branches with some new ones every few months or so... I have also read in some books that females in particular like the bark on trees and Pipina does like to give it a once over .. heheh

My budgies are out of the cage whole day, I only put them into the cage to sleep. When i get them up in the morning I give them an hour to feed and then I let them out. I leave the cage open as they like to during the day fly back, climb in a get some grub after which they fly out again. I put them back into the cage in the evening, usually they know they are going to sleep as they go in without flying away once (some times when they don't want to go it they will fly away a few times but in the end they go in off my finger) I leave them to feed properly before covering them and placing them into a dark corner.

Next day it all starts again.... :)

Usually once they have fed enough in the morning they will wait by the door for me to let them out, they are so cute. Overall they spend about 10h outside of the cage everyday. This is the way I want it, birds are meant to fly, have the freedom, keeping them in the cage is cruel in my view so I give them the freedom and the right for flight, and don't they love it. They are so happy and I am happy they are happy .. hehe

The mess they make is only a minor thing, where I made the branches near the window i have placed newspapers behind the sofa and the plant so they just need changing. The feathers i just hoover up and the occasional poop on the wall or window gets cleaned off... its really no big deal for me. I wanted the budgies, i knew there will be some mess, i accept it but because they make mess to restrict their life just to a cage so that my flat is tidy is not right. We humans have the privilege to go out, we also make a mess so we are just as bad :).... mess from the birds is only a minor thing for the affection and happiness they give me....

I forgot to answer your question,

Yeah Pipina is still the same, grumpy and moody as ever. You really know who is the boss around here (Laughing out loud), certainly isn't the male, I feel sorry for him as she always gets her way, int he cage if he is eating millets she would come over.. go pepepepepepepeepep in a really high pitched tone as in to say, get out its mine and poor Ferdicek has to jump away. Its the same with every food, so now I put 2 of each kind of food into the cage, she can't own 2 millets, or 2 honey sticks hehehe. She gets very moody once I have placed their nigh time cloth over their cage, so much that she will peck like crazy at anything. It's quite funny actually, she will peck into the thin air around her if I just move my hand over the top or side of the cage. Leads me to think she may have some poor vision when light level is low and as she can't see she tries to strike anything that moves even if its no where near her. Poor thing. Ferdicek doesn't do that, he is very kind and gentle..

Ill try and record her pepepepepepepeep today and post a sound clip, its really funny. I have never heard a budgie do that. I have had 4 budgies previously.

ahh i love them :)

Hello Everyone again,

I have some news to share with you all!!!! I have 2 more budgies!!!! YEY! :D

I knew a lady in the house (i live in a block of flats) that had 2 budgies but she didn't want them, she said she doesn't like them and that they are trouble to care for. When I asked why she got them she said she rescued one budgie from her friend as she didn't want it anymore and wanted to let it out of the WINDOW!!!!!!! :( I can't believe people would do that to such a quit small helpless bird. But my neighbour did rescue it so on her part she did good although she didn't really take care of it. She then bought a second budgie so that the one she rescued wasn't lonely.

When she found out that I had pet budgies she asked whether I would like to take them as she wanted to get rid of them, I said I already have two and that 4 may be too much... so I asked around and a friend of my mums said she would want them.. so she took them in. After two weeks though we got a call to say that the budgie has bit her 10 year old son and that she wants to give them away!!!!!!!!! only after 2 weeks!!!!!!!!! grrrr So I said just give them to me as they will have a lovely home her with my other two budgies... so i took them back... I wished i never gave them to her in the first place though, I though they were capable of caring for the birds but obviously I was wrong... when we got the cage back I was horrified at the lack of food they had in the cage for them....... one small bowl with seeds but it was 80% full with husks so the poor birds couldn't even eat.. GOD ONLY KNOWS HOW LONG THEY HAD IT LIKE THAT!!!!!!! then they had some grit, moneral stone and cuttle fish bone on the cage and that was it!!! I was disgusted!!!!

So straight away i filled up their cage with seed sticks, bells, millets, and filled up their bowls. The first day they were eating nearly all the time poor things....

anyway... they are good now... One is a male yellow/green and the one my neighbour bought is a small female and she still has totally black eyes so she must be very young. I've had them 2 days now and the male has started to come to my finger, I am taming them out of the cage with my two other budgies flying about too. The green male seems to not be so scared of the hand as after a few nervous steps trying to avoid my hand he then steps on my finger and lets me stroke him. The female however is more tricky as my neighbour has made no attempt at taming her. Today I have spent 2hours all together trying to get her to get use to my hand. I've got as far as being able to touch her, stroke her tommy, even stroke her back which was a surprise to me after only 2 days. She is very nervous though as she does fly over my hand when i give her my finger to step on but she doesn't fly away, she just flies over my hand to avoid the finger hehe..... i feel it is a privilege to stroke her only after 2 days. I have also found that she likes to copy my other 2 already tame budgies, when i have them on my fingers she flies to my hand and follows them..... then she suddenly realise that she is sitting on my hand and flies back to the branch... I really hope she still is young enough to get tame so that at least she sits on my hand and allows me to stroke her and put her back into the cage as my birds are out all day from 9am until 7pm

Here is a picture of my latest two additions.... as you can see new female on the left and male just in front. On the right is Pipina (White) and Ferdicek (Turqoise) They all get on very well.

mybirds.jpg

I would like some advice in terms of how to introduce vegetables to their diet, due to the poor care by the previous owners they are afraid of vegetables which I tried putting into their cage today. My other two budgies they love mashed peas, lettuce, carrot but these new budgies have obviously never had any of that in their life... :D I would also like advice on how to introduce them to a new water drinker... previous owners didn't have one so the budgies drank out of the bath that is attached to their cage. I keep filling it up with fresh water daily but I would like to get rid of it and use a water drinker. I use a spray to bathe my budgies so I don't need the bath.

Those poor things are confused, when i let them out 2 days ago they were so happy to be out of the cage, it was probably first time they had used their wings for flight in their life.... ahh was such a happy moment for me. I can't believe people would buy budgies so they can just sit in the cage all their life!!!!!!! people can be so mean and selfish..... depriving a bird of what it is born to do naturally..!!!! fly!

Hi Madman_CZ…I must congratulate you on your extremely kind attitude & love you have for your birds that comes from reading your posts. You have some pretty lucky birds, living I think in a bird paradise. I think that room must get a little messy now that you have the 4 birds. Seeing that you now have 4 adult birds don’t they try to breed somewhere in that room, as you have them at liberty all day?

As to getting the new birds to start eating vegetables, just keep giving them some small quantity every day & they will soon get the idea, the same with the water container, Budgies can go for quite some time without drinking, just remove the dish & leave your drinker, fill it completely & you will soon see it go down if they start drinking which I’m pretty sure wont be too long.

No one seems to have told you the names of the mutations you have in your birds, so in case your interested you have…left to right in your last picture…

A hen Yellow Faced type 2 Blue Recessive Pied…seeing she is Recessive she will keep those black eyes for her whole life, it’s one of the characteristics of them.

Next cock Grey Green Spangle…hen an Opaline Sky Blue Spangle Dominant Pied.

Cock Yellow Faced type 2 Sky Blue Normal.

As to how Pipina gets mad as it gets dark…I think she is just by nature an aggressive type female, some are more than others & the aggression I think you see towards night is normal, it’s a scary time for them in their natural habitat in Australia & they need to have a safe area around themselves, so I think it’s just a normal reaction.

Also nice birds.

Hi, your budgies are beautiful. I especially like Ferdicek. The set up you have there for them is gorgeous - they must love it :)

Hello Norm and Zebra

Thank you Norm for the mutation names. I had no idea what mutations they were, I guessed Pipina right by a book that I have about Budgies.

Yeah the setup they have in my living room they love very much, I have just added a perch across every corner of the room as they can fly from one corner to the other. Under every perch is a litter tray with newspapers so I just replace the newspapers every few days. It does get a little messy with all the bark that the budgies peel off from the branches but this is only little mess. The mess the budgies make is very very little compared to the mess humans make on earth, that's the way i look at it. All in all they are very clean birds, few droppings here and there, few feathers I just get the small portable hoover and hoover up any mess that is clearly visible. Behind the sofa are elastic bags which the birds mainly poo on which i replace weekly..

All I can say that they are very happy and they get on very very well with my other two budgies.... last night when i was putting all of the back into the cage, 3 went it fine except the small yellow new female... so i took some time to talk to her, touch her without the other 3 about and after about 20 minutes she stepped on my hand! :) aww poor thing she was very stressed. As she sat on my hand she was moving her beak.. so they I caught her and placed her in the cage.

Things are going well... today i will try feeding them from my hard, my first 2 birds eat from my hand no problem so i am hoping the new birds will copy my other two.

As for the vegetables, today i placed some lettuce into their cage and the little yellow female had a few pecks at it, not sure if she was just licking the water of or actually eating it :P
