Posted September 9, 200519 yr I need a wee bit of advice please! A friend at work had a budgie brought for him about 6 months ago and as he has decided to get a cat now, he has offered his budgie to me. She is very very tame and about 6/7 months old. I have an 9 month old girl budgie on her own and was thinking of getting a friend for her anyway. Do you think it would be okay to put these two together and do you think they will still stay very tame, so I am able to keep a relationship with them at the same time as them developing a friendship together? I've read previous advice on here at putting two budgies together, so am I right in saying that I would need to keep them in seperate cages for a while and then let one of them out seperatly so they can say hello to the other one still in the cage, then let them out to play together, then put them in the same cage. Should I keep both cages in the same room, or seperate rooms? How long should I keep them apart for? When do I let them say 'Hello' to each other? I would be grateful of any advice...... PS - The new budgie is green and he called her Kylie!!! What do we reckon on the name??
September 9, 200519 yr Quarantine in seperate rooms for a month. This is to ensure no spread of disease, also gives you a great time to bond with the new bird. Then bring them into the same room, and let them hear each other, then place their cages together. Allow them out for supervised flight time together, and see how they go. Most times they can live together, as long as you introduce them carefully, and don't put them in the same cage when they first meet. You may lose some of the bond you have, but certainly not all. Seeing 2 birds interact together more than makes up for any loss you suffer.
September 9, 200519 yr i wish someone would offer me a tame unwanted budgie! After quarantine im sure they will get on alright together and i bet they remain tame too. Introduce them slowly to each other and always have two of everything including a cage each at first. I would use the 30 days quarantine to bond with your new bird. Spend as much time as you can with her.
September 9, 200519 yr Does 30 days quarantine still apply if the person with Kylie hasnt had or being in contact with any other birds as Sarah says they have had her for 6 months. Just wondered on that one!
September 9, 200519 yr I was very lucky to be offered her. They said they would only give her to me as they know I would look after her I was only saying to my sister the night before (who is bird mad too) that I would love to get a little green girl for Patch and then hey presto! Do you think if I keep Patch in the living room and temporarily put Kylie in the kitchen that would be alright? Or should I put her upstairs? We only have a small house at the moment, but we have just brought a new house, so will be moving soon. Or should I wait till we have the new house? I'm dying to get her as soon as but obviously will do what is best for the girls! Would it matter if they could hear each other in the different rooms or would that be unfair? Or would it aid the bonding?

September 9, 200519 yr Dont quote me on that Sarah Im not sure and in case of any doubt still quarantine. Dont worry about them hearing each other. Ive 2 cockatiels one in quaratine in a different room and they squawk at each other all day long. I think its comforting to them to hear one of their kind. Im sure you will do whats best and Im really excited about seeing Kylie, I think her and Patch are going to make great buddies.

Roy said I can collect her whenever I like and now I don't know when to go? I'm getting all excited
September 9, 200519 yr I thought that quarantine wasn't really important seeing as Kylie has been a single bird for so long.
September 9, 200519 yr Now I beleive that Quarrentine is for Birds that have possible virus's that could have been caught from other birds. Eg form Breeders or Pet shops ect. Second thought, what if the bird had a cold. I suppose you should still quarrentine. Just to be careful. It would give you time to check the new bird out too.

Like I say, the house we are in now is quite small and I have Patch in the living room, so the only other room downstairs is the kitchen (2 up, 2 down). Would it be okay to keep Kylie in there for the month? It's a nice light room and we always have the backdoor open when we are in (it's not draughty in this weather) but the rooms are right next to each other....would this be okay do you think? :hap: I just want to makesure I do the best for them...I really appreciate your advice
September 9, 200519 yr I would say in the kitchen will be fine, Ive only a small house too so quarantining is always difficult but I managed and Im on my very last quarantine anyways. You sound like your the perfect owner for Kylie and if your 100% sure about having her I would get her as soon as possible to get her settled.
September 9, 200519 yr :hap: I've just been to see her and she is adorable. She is pale green, with very very light markings and light blue spots. She also has a pink quiff where she fell in the pot of jelly the other day I'm going to collect her tonight!!!!!!!!!!
September 9, 200519 yr Ooooo you are so lucky Patch....congratulations..Don't forget to show her off to us when you have collected her. :hap:
September 9, 200519 yr Oooooh Sarah Im so pleased for you, You HAVE to post some piccys when she is settled. I just love it when we get a new addition hehe!
September 9, 200519 yr I think she is going to be a little terror. When I went to see her she sat on my finger and head and shoulder, on the side of my coke and tried to drink it. She was in everything. I also think she needs a little budgie mummy tlc... I can't wait to get her home. Will post some pics as soon as I can.
September 9, 200519 yr Cant wait she sounds like a little darling, hope you have real fun with her and I bet Patch loves her too!
September 12, 200519 yr I got my Kylie home on Friday and I've wahsed her head so there is no more jelly stuck in it and she looks beautiful! I've taken some pics so will download them later and post them up for you to see. I've just got another query. I felt ever so guilty letting Patchie out at the weekend whilst Kylie was in the kitchen tweeting. I suppose it defeats the object of keeping them in seperate rooms if I was to swap the cages round and let Kylie out in for a bit whilst Patch sat in the Kitchen?
September 12, 200519 yr I think that under the circumstances with Kylie not being in contact with any other birds I dont see this as being too much of a problem. Hurry with those pictures Sarah hehe!

Hurry with those pictures Sarah hehe! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> No, I thought it would be okay too. When I first got her she was doing quite a few wet sneezes, but I cleaned her cage and toys (not sure this had been done ) and have given her some fresh veg ect and her sneezes are little and not very often and dry now. It doesn't feel quite right to introduce them just yet but they seem happy talking to each other in the different rooms...quite sweet really! I will post those pics once I've downloaded them from the camera.....I'm not technical so might take me a while
September 12, 200519 yr Kep an eye on those sneezes though she could have a little bit of a cold. My Charlie has at the moment. Keep the room quite warm that usually clears it up if it is a cold, might not be could be just the change in environment, either way monitor for it a few days and make sure it has cleared up completely before you introduce her to Patch. PIctures please Sarah hehe!

PIctures please Sarah hehe! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I think it was the fact that she wasn't cleaned or covered up at night. I have half covered her cage in the day and covered her up at night and it seems to have made quite a quick difference. She looked a little rough and ready on Friday and this morning she was preening herself and is much brighter and happier, which is why I was thinking that I might try letting her out later. I don't think her previous mummy and daddy were as in to their birds as I/we are. I am at work now, so you will have to wait till tomorrow for those pics....sorry to tease you
September 12, 200519 yr Oh right she was probably freezing the poor girlie. Im super glad youve got her, she is going to be spoilt rotten and so she should. See how she is later if she is in good form open her door she if she wants to come out dont force her though as she still wont be familiar of her surroundings. TOMORROW that ages away hehe!

I know....tomorrow seems so far away but then I've got to remember how to post the pics up
