Posted September 6, 200519 yr well we all know that an all seed diet is not good for budgies so I was wondering what is the best diet to feed them it took me over a year to get most of them on pellets only a week with the last 3 & now come to find out that even pellets are not the best diet for them this Is what some wrote to me in an e mail after I told them what my birds eat Try this: Seed (50-75%) Gold Label Feast 25-50% The carrots and eggs are fine CalciBoost in water at rate of 0.6 ccs per fl oz (five times a week for the first month then drop to twice a week) Feast contains a whole host of herbal and other ingredients you won't find in the pellets. These will improve immune and digestive function. And the diet will be more interesting for the birds.
September 6, 200519 yr I say seed, fruit, veggies. I'm not a huge fan of pellets *don't hit me* but my birds seem very happy getting a variety of things. (We're still working on fruit. :glare: ) Their preferred "veggie" is wheatgrass. Being as how parrots/birds in general are so smart, I think a variety of foods helps keep them stimulated. Just my opinion.
September 7, 200519 yr Mine get seed, veggies, sometimes fruit and sometimes egg food with a cuttlebone available constantly.
September 7, 200519 yr Mine get seed (Trill), egg & biscuit mix, spinach, carrots and their tops, parsley and broccoli everyday. They have 1 millet spray per week which is usually devoured in around an hour. And a special treat on Saturdays I give them Heinz 'Mums Own' baby food apple and banana sauce with grated apple and carrot in - they love it but they all get into a sticky mess.
September 7, 200519 yr feed mine bucktons champion blend (seed) i think it has 14 different types of seed and veg

September 7, 200519 yr Oooh thank for that info Hath, Im going to give the guy a call this afternoon he is only a 10 min drive away from me. Which one of those listed would you recommend to start with if I can get hold of some?
September 7, 200519 yr Can you feed budgies baby food then? Wow - I never knew that :nest: Do you just buy a heinz one with fruit/veggies in and put it in a little pot for them? Patch loves carrot and apple....might give that a go!!
September 7, 200519 yr any one of them talk to the man he will be able to tell you exactly whats in the mix
September 7, 200519 yr Cheers Hath! Yeah Patch I only feed certain ones the ones that dont contain rice, try the banana and apple sauce one and add whatever Patch likes - I do however only offer it once a week a special weekend treat.
September 7, 200519 yr To be honest Lin Im not sure, I thought it would bloat them and with Candy being on a diet I dont really like him eating filling stodgy food. Why do you feed rice?
September 7, 200519 yr No, I don't feed rice. I struggle to convince my birds that anything that doesn't come in a box marked 'birdseed' is not harmful to their health I thought you knew something I didn't
September 7, 200519 yr Oh no just dont want Candy getting porky again he is just a nice size now and his treat on a Saturday enough for him I think. You could maybe try some rice see how they take it though.
September 7, 200519 yr I shall give that a go this weekend. I've been trying to introduce new veggies and fruits each week. This week we tried watercress.....not sure if she ate any or picked it all to bits and chucked it on the floor, but hey ho! I love the thought of giving her baby food
September 7, 200519 yr I might try baby food and rice. They did just eat some thistle and grass, so i should strike whilst their feeling adventurous!
September 7, 200519 yr I do recommend the baby food plus it doesnt contain any additives or anything. I add grated apple and carrot to mine and sometimes boiled egg when I have eggs in stock hehe! Try rocket Patch its like watercress but not as faddy to hang in the cage, when I use it, it always falls out of the clips.
September 7, 200519 yr Oh, yes, she loves egg too....what a good idea!!! Mmm...the watercress was very fiddly to hang up, I did try putting it in a pot but she just picked the bits out one by one and put them on the floor, then she cocked her head sideways and stared at the mess she had made..... Thanks for the great ideas Boomberry! I'll let you know how I get on. Sarah x
September 8, 200519 yr No problem Sarah I hope Patch has fun getting all sticky. You must be joking Pixie they wont touch the stuff only Tobi did a few times, I must have gone through ?50 worth of the stuff with no luck. To be honest Ive given up for now and just increased their veg and fruit amounts. They cost me enough money in all the expensive veg they like. Is Casper eating them?
September 8, 200519 yr no... theres not been an appropriate time to try a proper conversion. i had to keep stopping when peanut went through a bad patch to make sure he didnt lose any weight. i am thinking of starting again with casper on the mash instead of the pellets. i dont know whether he will take to them though as he is getting on to a year old soon. i might give it one last try and if this attempt fails i will try no more.
September 9, 200519 yr I used the mash too it was just like powder and they didn't even attempt to sniff it let alone eat it. I reckon Superfine is about the best to start with, but from my experiences I cant be 100% on that. Let me know if you get anywhere with Casper, you never know if you get success I may try again. Maybe Charlie might have a go eh?
