Posted September 5, 200519 yr I used to have a pair of lovely little ratties. My ratty had never bitten me in my life. But just to be on the safe side I did not let my budgies out when the ratties were out. However once my budgie Aqua landed on the ratty cage and as quick as lightening the rat had jumped up and got hold of Aqua's foot through the wire. I managed to free Aqua and his toe was okay, but he got a huge fright. His toe healed completely and from then on I always covered the ratty cage with a blanket when ever the budgies were out. Rats are natural predators of budgies, but I didn't think that she would get aqua through the wire. So if you have rats don't let them come into contact with your budgies.
September 5, 200519 yr That's a great point! I've had rats, and they are very territorial of their home, and like you said, lightening fast. In fact, you shouldn't mix any animals, because one will always come off worse.
September 5, 200519 yr urgh! rats. My friend had one once and she said it was the best pet she had ever had. She put it down my back once as a joke and i almost fainted.
September 5, 200519 yr My daughter has seven rats which are all very tame and have never bitten any of us. However, when Chill is out of his cage we always put towels over the rats' cages just in case.....
September 5, 200519 yr Pet rats are cute to look at but I refuse to hold them anymore as the 2 times I have held them I got wee'd on both times
September 5, 200519 yr Karen, they tend to do that only when they are scared. As soon as they get used to you, they won't do it. Their such polite little creatures
September 5, 200519 yr I get shat on by Budgies, I will not be a rat's toilet too Maybe if I get some pet rats my parents will let me have the carpet snake I've always wanted hmmm

September 5, 200519 yr when my rats are in my room they take no intrest in alfie whatsoever! Alfie on the other hand watches them intenly :(Laughing out loud):
September 8, 200519 yr I have 8 rats and I love them dearly. Actually, rats often wee on you when they are 'claiming you' for their own - so it's often a sign of affection..... Besides, my birdies poo on me more often than my rats wee on me, bless 'em!! (Rats should always be kept in pairs at the very least as they are very sociable animals!!) And yes, they are very territorial. My budgies live in a Ferplast Medium Brio - that used to be a rat cage at one point!!!
September 9, 200519 yr Cats and Rats need not apply at my place. They will get a t boot up the bum! I found a cat on top of the avairy at 3:30am this morning. hing was quicker than me
September 9, 200519 yr What on earth were you doing up at that time Daz? Have you never heard of sleep?
September 9, 200519 yr I was sleeping but the noise of the birds flapping around in the dark woke my wife how kicked me in the back to wake me. I do like my sleep
September 9, 200519 yr tee hee. Is your wife just getting you back for all those times that you woke her to tell her the baby was crying?
October 20, 200519 yr I know this all to well...My sister left my rats cage open once, and he grabbed one of my budgies while she was in her cage, and ate her entire face and brain... When I found her, I couldn't hold that rat for a week! But it's not his fault, he gave me a look, and I had to forgive him...he was just doing what was natural. Twas a sad day though....
October 20, 200519 yr I sort of know how you feel. I had 2 mice a few years ago that got on perfectly. Then my friend got 2 'female' mice which then had babies. I got her male and put it in with my mice and it ate my favourite ones head off. I gave my friend her mouse back and never wanted anything to do with the other, so you did well to forgive your rat.
October 20, 200519 yr I have 24 rats, 6 bugies and I make sure they're kept well apart. A friend of mine told me that her budgie landed on the rat cage, the budgie ended up with one leg. After that, I decided the closest my birds and ratties'd get is 30cm and the walls of both cages apart, either that or the free rangers get the living room, the others wait patiently (mostly) in my bathroom. People, get the hint : Most rats love eggs! Mine love duck eggs boiled and mostly shelled(the last bit of shell keeps their minds occupied).
November 4, 200519 yr It's amazing how many people that have budgies have rats too! Not really...i love rats (hope to get some eventually) and i used to have pet mice before i got my budgies this year. Actually, i like all animals...i like guinea pigs too! I prefer small pets though. :feedbirds: I sort of know how you feel. I had 2 mice a few years ago that got on perfectly. Then my friend got 2 'female' mice which then had babies. Mice do that...though, usually when the other mouse is dead first. Not all mice do it...i only ever had one do it out of a total 8 mice. Edited November 4, 200519 yr by moonsdestiny
December 23, 200519 yr Author I've had over 80 mice (I used to breed them) and not once did they eat each other, however they used to live in a converted shed and so did wild rats. No matter what I did to the cages, rats would always find a way in and I lost a few mice that way. I also lost baby bunnies that way as well. . But rats are natural hunters, so you can not hate them all for doing what comes natural and what they must do inorder to survive, you can only prevent it from happening.
May 7, 200619 yr the same thing happened to me about 5 months ago, skittle was out and landed on the top of the rat cage before i could case him off like i have previously done my rat was at the top and had ahold of skittles foot. i was worried at 1st but bathed it in salt water and after a few days he was putting weight on it again. i then put a shelf on the top of the cage to prevent this happening again. ATD

June 2, 200717 yr Well I'm very glad I popped in here today. We've just been out to buy a lovely baby budgie. Not sure what sex it is yet, but we're thinking it's a 'he' and he's sitting here right beside me. We have a gorgeous lil rattie that we love to bits. But after reading this, we'll make sure they never meet. Pretty freaky stuff really.
