Posted August 22, 200519 yr I was just wondering if anyone(possibly Chirpy?) would know how to find somewhere that may have rescued budgies that need rehoming. I'm not ready to do it yet but am looking in to it and I'm getting nowhere. I would be interested in a disabled or otherwise. I rang the R.S.P.C.A. and was told they had budgie in their Bradford branch but as I had no transport there I asked if it could be done through their Halifax branch. To my amazement I got the reply that "Sorry,no. The Bradford and Halifax branches are seperate branches that do not have the same policies"??? I really don't understand that. So I rang Bradford and was told"Oh no sorry,we only rehome to aviaries, not cages". Full Stop. So I am picturing this poor budgie sat in what is mainly a boarding kennel surrounded by hundreds of loud barking dogs and thinking"Wouldn't it have been better here with me? I feel sure that if I told them I had loads of distraught dogs who barked all the time at home, then they wouldn't allow me to adopt this bird. I have also emailed a few rescue centres but have had no replies. Julie Edited August 22, 200519 yr by Julie
August 22, 200519 yr Hi Julie, I understand what you are saying. When I had SB and wanted a mate for him I tried to get a rescued bird even if they were disabled as SB had his own cage but we wanted to get him a mate as company for him but it would be housed in another cage at the side of him. We however drew a blank wherever we went. We even tried adverts in the local paper as we thought that there would be elderly people who had had budgies and would be homeless after their owners had passed away. All we were told was that disabled birds would be put down. Good luck in your search
August 22, 200519 yr I remember many years ago ringing the RSPCA for a puppy, only to be told they are put down as soon as they get them. I have never supported them since then! Just put the word out amongst people you know, and before you know it you will probably hear of a bird that needs a good home. Many years ago, my aviary birds died (of old age), and because I had an empty aviary, my darling friends put the word out, and before I knew it, I was being asked to rescue birds! I think the aviary was empty for a week! And I'd sworn no more birds! Good luck Julie
August 22, 200519 yr Julie, contact Gary at birdline UK, he gets the little guys in his rescue. If Im not mistaken, they hace resident budgies even now! You DO have to be a member to adopt, but they are a great rescue, I think the yearly subscription is ten pounds, soon to be fifteen, but genuine members are hard to find, you would be joyfully received! (Many people join to get a cheap/free bird like a grey, a cockatoo, a macaw etc. Birdline needs all the genuine members it can possibly get! Email me and I'll give you all his contact details xxx
August 23, 200519 yr wow all this bad press with R.S.P.C.A! I know for a fact ( and I?m sure this will cheer Julie up a bit) that one close to me has a special bird room. And it's quite clear that the birds in it are happy, they get wild branches and gum leave to chew on and there is a small night room for owls and such that may come in. It's a bit hard with all the dogs to get away from the noise but it doesn't bother them. Have any of you seen the amount of animals that come to them? In puppy and kitten seasons it can be well over a thousand for one pound in a month! I will agree though that I have since found a place that really works hard to find a home for all their animals. Lin the news about the puppies is terrible since young cats and dogs are the easiest to find new homes for. The public seem to think anything over the age of 2 is far too old to love!
August 23, 200519 yr Do you know I've never ever had any help from the R.S.P.C.A. for any animal I've ever rung about(unconnected to me). These include an injured fox("we've nobody available") a bird stuck up a chimney("If it's not injured or distressed there's nothing we can do"!?!?)a sheep trailing a tyre from a rope round it's neck(no response at all), A dog with a large abcess ("Sorry can't help") a ***** recently given birth which was so hungry she was eating polythene("Not really our area of responsibility....").Anybody know exactly what they DO do?
August 24, 200519 yr Whenever i've had to ring the RSPCA they've been so helpful! Me and my friend once found a baby bird and they gave us the phone number of a place that could take it and told us how to keep it warm and secure and when we lost Mickey they put him on the website. They seem so good.
August 24, 200519 yr you know I'm starting to wonder if there is a difference in the way the aussie r.s.p.c.a works and the English one. One place I helped out at even had an ostrich (named chook chook )rescued there which they were find a place for on a farm. there is on way the ones i know of in my area would leave that sheep or the bird. And the dog would have been collected checked out then then placed in a foster home until the pups where old enough to leave mom. As to the fox well sorry to say it would have been put down (but at least collected) since they are a pest in aus killing our native animals.
August 24, 200519 yr Bit confused as to the term I used for a female dog has been replaced with asterisks? Makes me look like I used a really bad word-is it not allowed on here? Definitely a big difference I would say-what made it even worse as far as the dog was concerned was that she was running wild in a school (where she was eating the left over polystyrene trays from food) and had obviously just recently given birth but we couldn't find where the pups were. August 24, 200519 yr (Laughing out loud) I knew what you meant and knew you were been rude I believe not with it been wiped out like that. Blocking rude words doesn't pick out when it's in fact a correct term.
August 24, 200519 yr Do you mean you knew I WASN'T being rude!!! I'm gettin a bad enough name on here anyway, let's not make it worse!!!
August 24, 200519 yr I have my name down at the local vets as a foster home and they call me when they need me. Sometimes the animals are claimed and have a happy ending and sometimes they are never claimed and stay with me - still a happy ending. You could try that Julie?
August 24, 200519 yr i check those little boards in the supermarket everytime i see them - you konw the ones with stuff for sale etc. im always hoping to see a little needy bundle of feathers
August 25, 200519 yr More good ideas there-the only trouble is if I do what you both suggest I could never say no and I really don't have a big enough house for the three I've got now! Julie
August 25, 200519 yr but its the same with a rescue thingy! you'd be better getting another from the breeder Julie. Otherwise i can see you moving out the house into a shed inthe garden whilst budgies take over your home
September 26, 200519 yr Out of 26 RSPCA Council members (head of RSPCA) 18 are now Antis so RSPCA is run by Antis. Most animals now get PTS unless they can make a profit off them.
September 26, 200519 yr Slightly lost there "Antis" not sure what they/that is. I've had problems with the RSPCA and also success, if you call the national helpline you just get a muppet who doesn't give a dam about the animals. If you manage to speak to your local branch then normally you can get someone to give you help. If all else fails then think of getting in contact with Rolf Harris and let him know about any RSPCA branch offering poor service. I think each country should have a dedicated budgie rescue sanctuary where all the unwanted & found birds could be kept and carefully looked after. Anyone got any land? Anyone got any idea's on how to raise funds for such a large project? :glare:
September 27, 200519 yr I agree with you I have a massive Avairy Yesterday I found a budgie in my feed bin eating it could not fly as the wings had been injured it had a Legband with a phone number who I ranged the owner Who I was SHOCKED the reply the owner gave you can keep the little GUY WE DONT WANT HIM We set him free . He is Now in a small cage and soon living with my other budgies . I said you kow most bird can not live in the wild and would day within many days RSPCA did not want him you can have him then .
