Chewing Her Foot Off!

Featured Replies

I've e-mailed the only rescue in this county that might possibly be able to take her... the Heartland Animal Rescue... I haven't gotten a reply... I need to hunt down the phone number, but so far no luck... If anyone can find it for me I would be very grateful. I'll keep looking.

EDIT: Oh, and it's a 10-minute drive to work, and the car has AC.

Ask them if they would just help you get to the vet or if they know of anyone who would help with something like this. It looks like a dog/cat rescue so I don't know how much luck you'll have but hopefully they love animals enough to want to help you out.

okay, I just tried calling, but there's no answer... I'll try again a bit later.

Good luck!

Keep on trying to get help. As for commuting to work, yes it will be a little stressful for a bird who is unwell but if you are unable to find help in the end and have to bring her to work, make sure you cover her cage so and minimize the movement of the cage during the journey. I don't think there is a need for AC for a little bird.

There is need for a little AC if the tempurature outside right now is over 100 degrees F. I'll turn it on low. >X.x;<

I've got her a special carrier which is covered and dark, but does have ventilation.

I just tried calling that rescue again and still there is no answer. >-.-<

Is there a neighbour who is willing to give you a ride?

I know only one neighbor, and my dad said she is also having car problems... I live in a really ghetto neighborhood... >X.x;<

I'm going to ask her myself though.

Go, go ask...see what she says..

Its not a cure to the problem but I have a way for you to help soothe it until she is seen by a vet.

Dip a tea bag in sterile water and bathe her foot in it, I dont know why this works but its an old wives tale to help fight infection - and it really works!! It might be worth a try as an interim?

I find the budgie predicament tragic, but the Sebring thing rather amusing. My boyfriend grew up in Sebring. It really is a very small, secluded town. He cals it "the vortex of central Florida".

In fact, I took a very sweet found pigeon and had to drive from Ft. Myers to a Humane Society close to there in LaBelle. Later on I wanted to retrieve her or see if they could tell me where she had gone to, and they denied ever having accepted any pigeons, ever! And the reason I drove her all the way out there was because it was the only Humane Society around known to accept pigeons on account of the "pigeon lady" who worked there. Incredible!

Anyway, this has nothing helpful about your bird, regretably, but I hope it will help you realize that you're not alone, and for anyone doubting your efforts to find a place to help this little creature. Sebring truly is a void of animal care.

I really wish I had advice for you.

Have you tried putting something foul-tasting, yet harmless, onto the leg? Maybe she wouldn't chew it if it tasted bad. Of course, you would have to be careful not to put any into the wound itself.

I'm very sorry about this news. Good luck and keep us posted.

I'm so glad somebody understands about Sebring... I swear to god, if I went any further south, I'd be in ***, and it would probably be better than this place, and a whole lot cooler... >X.x;<

Also, yes I have tried using something on her foot called "Fooey", and believe me, it's very bitter (I got some in my mouth somehow >X.x;<!) A wildlife rehab place suggested putting alum on the foot... But I dunno if I want to put anything else on the foot but antibiotic, as tissue is exposed and it probably hurts like *** to have stuff sprayed on it.

I have been rinsing it with saline and sterilized water, and putting some triple-antibiotic on it, as it's all I can do at this point... aside from watching her like a hawk.

In other news, my stepmom is an idiot. She went over to the neghbor's again and so the neighbor filled her head with a bunch of BS, so she came back weilding a bird book that was published in 1984, and telling me that the bird is chewing on its foot because it's overstimulated from too many toys in the cage, and that it's stressed out because I give it ATTENTION by taking it out of the cage, and letting the cage be by the computer and TV so the bird has something to watch.

Budgies NEED stimulation. They NEED toys, and there are not too many toys in the cage. It's not like I have them hanging off EVERYTHING. If they are alone and tame, they NEED to be taken out and given attention! And if she didn't want to be out with me, she wouldn't walk out the cage door when I open it! And the book said nothing like that so I dunno how she got that BS from it. And even if it DID say that, the book was published in NINETEEN-EIGHTY-FOUR.

*Deep breath* Sorry.... just needed to vent... >-.-;< My stepmom knows absolute JACK about birds. Also, forget about the neighbor taking me. She's a moron and wants me to take away the bird's toys etc. and won't take me to the vet.

What kind of teabag should I use? Is that really true? Does it relieve pain or something?

EDIT: Ooo... I can't say H-E-double-hockey-sticks hahaha...

any normal tea bag will do - but not herbal, they dont seem to work as well. Yes it really does work, I used it on my cat when she lost in a fight as an interim between home and the vets, it seemed to soothe and the vet said it was the best thing to do when I got there cos somehow it stimulates healing. Got no idea how though.

I've pretty much run out of other options because my family sucks... 2 more weeks and I'll be moving, and I'll be just 10 minutes away from Alameda East in Denver, and they most definitely treat birds.

I am really jealous! Is that the vet surgery that has a show on Animal Planet called Energency vets? It's a pity you aren't living near there already.

That's true but there is such a thing as overstimulation, especially if your bird is stressed from her injury. The reason I suggested taking out a few toys is because compared to the cage size, there really seems to be too many. The cage looks quite small and if you were to add more (varied) perches there would be even less space.

Have you tried calling the taxi company yet?

I have taken out the bulkiest toy (the colorful rope thingy).

Unfortunately, it will run me $100-150 for taxi service to and from the nearest Avian vet, which I can't afford if I want to pay vet bills. >-.-< I still can't get in touch with the only rescue here that might possibly take birds.

Good thing is, she hasn't chewed her foot in about 2 days. I've been watching her, and when I went to work today I turned the TV on Animal Planet, so she watched that all day. I came home with a better mirror than I had, and so replaced the other one with this one.

And yes, Alameda East is in Denver right by where I'm going to live, and the first thing I'll be doing when I get there is to take this bird to them, regardless of if her foot looks better or not... she needs to be looked at anyway, and they're one of the best.

Good luck.Keep us updated anyways.

OMG I am so sorry to hear of you & your budgies predicament :) At least you can vent here, (Laughing out loud). I am glad to hear she hasnt chewed in 2 days. Maybe shes coming around, poor thing. Keep us posted :)

I'm glad to hear she hasn't chewed for a couple of days! Hopefully she'll stop! Keep us posted on how she gets on. :)

I wonder if you could try an avian anti nibble spray?

I wouldn't do it if her foot is sore though.I suppose it was a silly suggestion really because it's bound to be sore, but if she does stop chewing it and it clears up it might prevent her from wanting to start again?

Julie

Yes, I think that is a good idea, if it doesn't cause more pain to the foot. I think Canopy Scientific makes something called "Better Bitters" made especially to deter birds from chewing stuff. It is available at most pet stores...

update please... how is she???

Yes, please let us know what has happened!

Risha

okay, she hasn't chewed her foot in over 3 days now, and it's healing. The end of the toe won't grow back of course, but she gets around just fine... as long as she doesn't start chewing again.

She has also started chewing on her cuttlebone, which she never would do previously, and she's drinking from her regular water container instead of the one I had lying on the ground (the store she came from has bad methods of feeding and watering the birds... everything is ON THE GROUND, so they don't learn how to eat from common food/water containers)

I had already tried the bitter stuff, and it didn't help... I'm thinking it may have irritated her foot more than it was and probably contributed to her chewing it. I think I'll take that stuff back and get my money back (Laughing out loud)...

On the 3rd, I'll be starting on the road from Florida to Colorado, and she'll be better by then if she doesn't chew anymore. Thanks for all the support guys!

I'll still be visiting Alameda when we get there so they can just give her a looking over.

Good luck.
