Posted August 18, 200520 yr My Merly butt can't have much veggies, it upsets her stomach something shocking, and we have no idea why. My aunt blasted my head off for not giving her veggies daily, yet she gets weekly vitamins as recommended by the vets because otherwise her poop will go black overnight and she'll get really sick , as they don't know why she can't have much veggies and gets like this. Plenty of birds live to old age without veggies every day, so I was just wondering how often people feed veggies to their birds and why?
August 18, 200520 yr My birds live in the main living area, so they want to eat whatever enters our mouth(food, toothbrushes, pencils, etc.), so while we're eating dinner, we offer them a healthy part of it, such as lettuce, a tomato, carrot(cut up into tiny peices).
August 18, 200520 yr I offer daily, that is not to say they eat it every day. I really only have one budgie that I have managed to convert to a love of vegies, but she can be very stubborn and won't nibble every day
August 18, 200520 yr I feed everyday and change them twice a day once in the morning and once when I get in from work. Its needless to say that I use a LOT of veggies. I feed lots more variety now, spinach, carrots and their tops, apple, brocolli, kale and the odd bit of corn, Ive replaced millet spray for carrot tops mainly because Candy is on a diet and all his was eating was seed and millet, he has now lost 12g and is loving the veggies and if that doesnt make it worthwhile I dont know what will!!
August 18, 200520 yr i feed mine veggies whenever i remember to...(Laughing out loud) probably every 2nd day ! sometimes 3rd !
August 18, 200520 yr Everyday for me too. I feed one main veggie each week and rotate them weekly. My budgie loves to munch on anything.
August 19, 200520 yr hmm, u guys make it seem so easy to get them to eat vegie. I've been trying for 2 weeks and to no avail. *cry*
August 19, 200520 yr What vegies are you trying? It's always hard at first! You should try maybe some brocolli or grated carrot mixed in their seed. They also seem to go for leafy things like carrot tops, lettuce, celery leaves and spinach. Not too much lettuce though as it's very watery.
August 20, 200520 yr I alternate vegies everyday. My birds' favourites are celery, carrot & corn. They don't like apples, tomatoes, brocoli etc. Like me they are very fussy eaters. My guys also love bread crusts which I limit them to once a week - this is good as I don't like bread crusts. I once read somewhere that budgies love peanut butter. Boris will eat my sandwich but ignore the peanut butter as has every other bird. Has anyones budgie eaten peanut butter?

She doesn't like apple, tomatoes and she hates bananas!
August 20, 200520 yr I put veggies in the cage everyday but my two will not touch it. When we had SB he would eat everything you gave him so I find it very difficult with these two.
August 29, 200519 yr hmm, u guys make it seem so easy to get them to eat vegie. I've been trying for 2 weeks and to no avail. *cry* <{POST_SNAPBACK}> same with me i only feed veggie when im eating them because thats the only time skittle will eat is when he is pinchin mine (Laughing out loud). ATD
August 31, 200519 yr Mine get several different types of veggies twice a day. The bit about the black poo - I was told when it is black it is because the bird is not eating.
October 12, 200618 yr Daily for my lot, although they will only eat greens - any green veg! I keep trying though!!
October 12, 200618 yr I feed veg daily. I was watching them and they love to bite it and spit it out, more then to eat it :budgiedance: :
October 12, 200618 yr Mine love romain now but it took a while to get them to eat it. Now they will try anything I put in there, but I think they like tearing it up more than they like eating it. For them it is a new toy as I feed it to them in different ways all the time. It makes them curious and they can't seem to resist. I offer fresh stuff every day. Shell
October 12, 200618 yr mine get veggies everyday too. some type of green, grated carrots, corn, and diced apples plus i add their soak mix that contained beans, lentles, peas, barley, rice & corn
October 12, 200618 yr I prepare all my food fresh in the morning before I leave for work. Daily my guys get broccoli, parlsey, and kayle. For fruit they like apple and occasionally some pineapple. They prefer to eat their fruit when they are out flying about and I stick pieces of apple through their aviary. Edited October 12, 200618 yr by Maureena
October 18, 200618 yr On the topic of veggies and budgies i was cleaning veggies for the dogs supper tonight and i threw away a lot of extra fennel 'shavings' and that got me thinking is fennel good for the budgies? i buy a lot of it becuase the dogs love it so much as well as me. Then i thought what about other aromatic veggies, and herbs? basil and mint are in excess in my window pots so what if i cut them down a bit? i can't find yes or no answers so what is your prospective?
October 18, 200618 yr My guys get veges every second day. They will only eat broccoli celery and a little bit of spinach. My white birds love corn and they get yellow faces when they eat it, its sooo cute. My indoor birds eat anything I do. But its gotta be off a fork or they think its not good enough for them!
