Posted August 9, 200519 yr This afternoon when i went out to check my budgies i noticed Pickles wing drooping down funny and caught him for a closer look. He had some weird thing poking out of it. :fear His feet were also not gripping the perch too well. Anyway, we called the vet and got an appointment and Pickle has been diagnosed with: weak feet, a mangled blood quill (couldn't be pulled because it would bleed really really bad, it has to dry up so Pickle can preen it away), and also severe stress which we believe to be caused by his son Lime. Lime has stolen Pickle's mate (and his own mother!) and since then Pickle has been a bit down. The vet recommended that i put him in a less stressful environment away from Slimey Lime so that his wing can heal and he can get over the loss of his mate. He's in my bedroom in a little cage which the vet said would be fine as it is important that he doesn't fly too much. At the vets Pickle was sitting quite happily on the vets finger so i'm thinking of attempting to tame him up a bit...i think the trick in this case might be celery. :glare:
August 9, 200519 yr Aww poor Pickle I hope he is going to be okay. Will he be going back out into the aviary when he is better or are you keeping inside with you and Blinkie?
August 9, 200519 yr Author Depends i supose...if he perks right up after a bit of isolation then i might try putting him back out in the aviary. But then we could just end up right back at square one because Lime is a bully boy. :glare:
August 9, 200519 yr Yeah I know how that feels my Maxwell is a bully boy towards Bobby he never gives up on him until he has gotten him right out of the way. They used to be the best of friends and shared the big cage but now I have to keep them seperate because Max could really hurt him he has done before. Is Pickle tame at all?
August 9, 200519 yr Author Well i don't know if it's because he's a bit under the weather but he was sitting perfectly on the vets finger throughout the whole consultation. :glare: He also eats celery out of my hand.
August 9, 200519 yr Wow thats pretty good saying he is an aviary bird - how old is he? I hope he gets better quick does he seem to like being inside. Has Blinkie seen any of them?
August 9, 200519 yr Poor little Pickle :fear I hope he is better really soon. Maybe you need a new lady friend for him :glare:
August 9, 200519 yr Author Wow thats pretty good saying he is an aviary bird - how old is he? I hope he gets better quick does he seem to like being inside. Has Blinkie seen any of them? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> He's about 2. I've had him a year. Poor little Pickle I hope he is better really soon. Maybe you need a new lady friend for him :fear <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I think he's given up on the ladies....he put all his effort into winning Buzz's heart when he first arrived and then his snotty son went and nicked her! :glare: Next month i'm going to give Lime a kick up the butt though...i'm planning on trying to breed Gherkin to Buzz.
August 9, 200519 yr Him being older will make him a bit harder to tame wont it. What Gherkin doesnt like girls weve tried before, does he ever go near Buzz?
August 9, 200519 yr :(Laughing out loud): Sweet This is getting freaky, Pie is Two and I've had him for about a year and his son is TRYING to nick his mate away too :glare: I'll be watching them closly now :fear
August 9, 200519 yr Author Him being older will make him a bit harder to tame wont it. What Gherkin doesnt like girls weve tried before, does he ever go near Buzz? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Gherkin and Buzz are always sneaking in kisses behind Lime's back now! Wow! That is strange Nerwen! :glare: Must be something about the age.
August 9, 200519 yr Author :(Laughing out loud): Dad just told me what the vet wrote in the computer under treatment: keep away from bullies!
August 9, 200519 yr Author Yeah, i really hope he fixes that blood quill soon. It looks terrible. As far as i can tell it broke, the blood dried and mangled the feathery bits and now it's all moulded in an odd shape and if you pull at it it starts to bleed. :glare:
August 9, 200519 yr Aww that must be pretty painful for him too, how will it go back to normal - if he just messes with it and preens it wont it bleed if he does it?
August 9, 200519 yr Author I think it will continue to grow out and the blood supply dry out so that is can be preened out.
August 9, 200519 yr Teehee I think I would had laughed if I saw the vet type that in :glare: And yeah it may sit funny but it will grow out like any other feather :fear
August 9, 200519 yr Oh good as long as he isnt in any pain with it thats the main thing. Give him a honey treat Bea thats sure to cheer him up
August 9, 200519 yr Author You think that's funny! First time Buzz went to the vet she got labled a 'plump and healthy female budgie'!!! :(Laughing out loud): She got the nickname Plumpy for a while after that.
August 9, 200519 yr Hehehe plump thats a new one for my Candy pleasantly plump, but not as plump. At least your vet is comical puts you at ease I think instead of stern faced vets!
August 9, 200519 yr Poor Pickle. Hope you decide to keep him inside, but the vet did say keep away from bullies, so I suppose that means Blinkie . Sorry Blinkie, I didn't mean it Bea, please leave poor Gherkin alone. Poor darling, your confusing him :yellowhead:
August 9, 200519 yr Author I'm never going to be left alone about Gherk am i? :yellowhead: I never thought about Blinks counting as a bully! :(Laughing out loud): I will just take things as they come, maybe Pickle will have to become an indoor birdie but i think that if he regains his old energy then he deserves a chance to go out and win his lady back.
August 9, 200519 yr Yeah I agree he might not be happy being indoors anyways. Fingers crossed he builds his strength up enough to go kick Limes butt hehe!
August 9, 200519 yr Author :(Laughing out loud): This is becoming the match of the year...who shall be victorious?
