Posted August 1, 200519 yr Hi, just wondering what others use (if anything) to keep the air smelling a bit sweeter than of seed and bird. I have Percy with his cage in our small sitting room, he has the flight of the room unless we are out then I shut him in the cage. I can't often open the window in the room mainly because it's behind a heavy secondary glazing unit, but also because we are on a main road and fumes come in, although at certain times I open just to recirculate the air. Obviously under those conditions, although I have a small oscillating fan on during the summer, the air is stale and smells of "bugie"..... is there any natural product I can put in the room that won't affect Percy? I have noticed one thing, we often eat chewing gum and leave unopened packets in the room.... and when I go in there in the morning I can smell the gum more than the bird stuff (Laughing out loud).... is there anything like this that would do a similar trick do you know? Thanks for taking the time to read this and many thanks for any answers you can give me.
August 1, 200519 yr I was just wondering about using a natural lavendar oil in water? I have one on my radiator. Julie
August 1, 200519 yr How about what Kim and Aggie in How Clean is Your House use. They use bicarbonate of soda mixed with water and lemon juice and spray in a mister - its meant to neutralise odours. I might give it a go!
August 1, 200519 yr Bird lungs are very sensitive... to my knowledge if you can smell it when you spray it, odds are it's bad for your bird.
August 2, 200519 yr How about you get hold of some gum leaves and scrunch them up so that they release a lovely eucalypt smell?
August 2, 200519 yr Good idea Bea but we don get them here. Could use lavender I suppose like Julie suggested.
August 2, 200519 yr Hi, My cage is in the living room. I clean my budgie's cage every day. Besides that, I put an Odour Beater (mine is produced by Sci Tech-Its called Pet Lovers' Odour Beater) under the cage shelf where it is unreachable by my budgie and there goes. No smell at all. I think the product wasn't originally meant for birds as the cover shows pictures of dogs and cats but I use them anyways. It does not emmit any odour itself. I think its a combination of pieces of charcoal and gel. Charcoal has always been used to neutralize odours. I guess you could try but if you want something that emmits nice smell, this product is not for you.
August 3, 200519 yr I was just thinking....i didn't think budgies smelt. Blinkie doesn't smell enough to stink out a room.
August 3, 200519 yr I have six birds and they are all in the same room and they dont smell at all - in fact they smell beautiful hehe. I would just like a nice fresh smelling room though.
August 3, 200519 yr Author Hi thanks for everyone's suggestions... I think I might try the "How clean is your House" one.... also come to think of it, maybe even leave the Wrigleys Chewing gum about (before eating of course (Laughing out loud)) as it I can at least smell that in the room when it's there. As for budgies smelling... nooooo I don't think it's budgie smell at all, more like.. food, sandpaper... you know the "pet shop" smell and as I can't open the window too often I think it's more stale air than anything. Thanks for your help and if anyone does find out the perfect (smile) solution to this I'd love to know. KOKO folks xx :grbud:
August 5, 200519 yr i have never noticed a smell from my budgies either. i suppose the best way to eliminate pet shop smells is to clean the cage every day, and keep all the pet shop products in a cupboard cant say ive noticed it though. i think the lemon idea is a good one.
