December 12, 200519 yr So I’m going a little off topic here, but do budgies like humans go grey? I rescued an old green boy from a pet shop a worked at and his girlfriend, (he was left by his old owners they had a sick child and all of their pets came to the shop) anyway that was a few years ago and he’s looking a little old it may just be he needs another shower (which he really does hate) And again off topic I’ve been feeding my hamster Harrison’s bird feed for 5 years now and she look just healthy as could be. Jennifer and the flock
December 21, 200519 yr I have a chinchilla that is 5 years old. Chinchillas live for about 10 to 15 years on average with the odd few going on to 20. They live pretty long for a small animal.
January 14, 200619 yr listen once i was reading a pet book before i got Zira and in the large parrot section it said once a cockatoo lived to 120!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
January 15, 200619 yr Incredible! How could they determine the age in the bird? A tattoo or a ring or what?
January 15, 200619 yr Incredible! How could they determine the age in the bird? A tattoo or a ring or what? well it was born in captivity and lived its whole (long) life in captivity so it probobly had a band on its leg and the owner(s?) counted the years it was alive. we might have to do more research to see if any birds lived longer than that its highly unlikly though. i wonder if Guiness world records recorded that lifespan?
January 25, 200619 yr There is a major mitchell's cockatoo living at brookfield zoo in Illinois that has been there since maybe the 1930s or something, I can't remember what year. I always go to see her. Sad to see her alone in her display cage, though. They gave her a birthday party with cake at least once. :redalbino:

She does seem VERY lonely in her cage far away from people by herself! :ausb:
January 25, 200619 yr You would certainly think because they are a zoo that they would know these birds are extremely social, especially in this day of age. I wonder what her background is and her social behavior, that would be interesting to know. Maybe when you go back to the zoo you can ask

I would hope they spend a lot of time with her and she is not alone much.
