How long to budgies on average live for?

Is it true some live upwards of 25 years?

Edited by artichoke

as a general estimate, most budgies live between 6 and 10 years. i have never heard of a budgie living to 25. very occasionally a budgie will live into its teens. larger parakeets and small species of parrot live until the age to 25.

Why do budgies have to live such a short life. They are only with you a short while in this life but they certainly make a great impact on you.

i agree JJ2571

I also agree. Budgies are such great little creatures it's a shame they don't live longer. I always worry that Blinks won't be there when i wake up each morning.

A friend of mine from Adelaide told me she knows of a budgie who lived to 20 but died a few days later. She told me if you breed budgies they live to 6 years.

I don't think breeding budgies can make their lives so short. Breeding continuously though, can't be healthy for either of the birds, but if you carefully manage the breedings and give both birds ample recovery time it can't be THAT bad for them.

My grandma's budgie Corky (her 1st one) I remember was like 15 they said when he passed on.

I have heard that they can live to 15 years of age. I always hoped that SB would live until he was 15 but sadly it wasn't to be. They all have their own little characters and you wouldn't be without them but I think there is always that one that is very special.

The budgie that holds the record is a budgie called Charlie from England, who lived to 29, although in 2000 there was a budgie in Australia called 'Pretty Boy' who was 26 years old.... I have no idea how long he lives after that though.

Take a look if you're interested :)

A couple of years ago on TV (Burke's Backyard i think), there was a budgie who was 26 years old. They can get pretty old but mostly don't.

It's all relative - for me, a budgies' lifespan is a long one for a 'small pet'.

I have pet rats - and for them, 2 years is average - anything over that and you're doing very well. Which is very hard to deal with. In fact, I'm thinking of having degus instead eventually, as they live for about 5 years upward, which is easier to cope with. I do love my ratties though.

Danny our budgie who died most recently, was 12 1/2 when he died!! :bluebudgie:

You do think, 'well, he's had a good life'. But he was a real part of the family and I felt totally lost for ages after he died. We still miss him a lot. I mean, I'm 25, so he'd been around for a large proportion of my life, so losing him was very hard. Tommy is very like Danny in lots of ways, which is why we got him!

For such small creatures, they do leave a very big gap in your heart. :oliveb:

:) Hamsters only live up to 7 or so months apparently so I guess we are lucky. I once worked with a woman who had her budgie put down @ 15 plus years as he had a stomach tumour, no wonder, his favourite foods were roast beef dinner with gravy and Chinese takeout!! He also could say about 50 words or phrases. All this makes me wonder why my rescue budge (almost 11) is interested in breeding and taking care of babies? Adopted him as I wanted him to spoil him in his last golden years as I don't know what he had gone through before and he flys rings around everyone else so you never know. :D

My 1st budgie Samson lived for 15 years I will never forget him and I love all my birds but none have ever stole my heart like he did..when he died my daughter then aged 15 said there was never a time in her life that she was without living at the same time as Sammy I bought him when she was a new born baby and put the budgie box under her pram she is nearly 26 now and we still talk about him..Linda

Hamsters live about 2 - 3 years - the same as rats and most small rodents. Not that long - but certainly longer than 7 months.

:D That's good to know, not that I want a hamster but I read that from am presumably unreliable source.

:D Well this old dude is still plugging away I was thinking of bringing him in for summer but I think he would pine for his buddies

Aw bless!! Hommer's lovely! Wow! He's doing very well for his age!

Phoebe - no problem. It's amazing how much weird info there is out there! It's the biggest 'downside' of having small pets for me, the fact that they don't live very long. At least budgies do stay with you for a 'reasonably' long time in comparison.

Slightly off-topic I know, but Phoebe - a big reason most hamsters don't make it past 7 months is diet-related. Most people feed a hamster seed mix, and like feeding budgies seed only gives them an earlier death sentence. Hamster seed mixes are low in calcium among other things, and since their bones are so small and brittle anyway broken bones are common too (you know how they are fearless and will jump out of your hand or off the table or whatnot :D ).

Yep Rainbow - all small animals should be getting fresh fruit and veg (which ones depends on the specific animal) and other things in addition to seed mixes. Plus they need a high quality mix, as with budgies. My rats are on a home-made mix from a diet on the web, specifically designed to provide them with what they need.

It's handy that the budgies like similar fruit and veg to the rats - such as curly kale, which both birds and rats love and is really healthy for them.

(A bit off topic, so sorry.....)

I have known of lots of hamsters making it to 3 years though. Good husbandry coupled with lots of research is the key really, as with all our beloved pets.

Research is so vital, and the web is an invaluable source of up-to-date information, especially from forums like this. I believe my pets have benefited from the internet a great deal! Books are sadly often out-of-date and inaccurate.

Apologies for the waffle.

Yeah, when I had a hamster, she ate Harrison's just like the birds, only in a larger size. She only got the seed stuff as a treat every couple of days, and ate veggies daily. Variety is the key.

Very handsome!!

-_- I am embarassed to say this but my birds eat a better variety of fruits, vegetables and whole grains than me, I am a junk food junkie!!!! Plus they take vitamins which I don't, all I take is my anti-hypertension pills!!

He is a strapping boy that one! Does he still think he's a youngster & try to breed?

My family had a budgie that lived until he was 18. He had the most unhealthiest diet ever, he used to eat chips, cheese, biscuits and drink tea. He was a really grumpy bird as he got older as well. but i truly loved him to bits!!
