Hi Everyone,

 

I have read from a webpage somewhere that we should not kiss birds or in this case budgies as human's saliva is supposed to be toxic to the birds. I would try to look for the link again and see if I could find it. Just to let everyone know so that we do not pass on any unwanted virus to our budgies.

Hmm I have never heard this before? I am not saying i disbelieve you but could someone confirm? I guess it makes sense...seeing as cat saliva is lethal, but the link to the site would be nice...and thank you for the warning...

But the amount of salive passed on via one quick peck onthe beak doesn't i count im sure. Unless you are going to stick your tongue down its throat i wouldn't think it is harmful.

This fact has been posted before but you have to think how you actually kiss your budgie. It's not like you wet up your lips for a big tongue kiss! I make sure my lips are dry if i'm kissing Blinkie.

Yeah and I would say something wasnt just quite right if you were kissing your budgie the way I think that fact mean hmmm!

Do you think it is the same for cockatiels because mine picks stuff out of my braces...or he just pokes them im not sure...ya i know its disgusting but shes the one who keeps shoving her beak in my mouth when im smiling...

OMG i was just enjoying a cheese and gherkin sandwich and bam all i have now is visions of braces and cockatiels!

a small type of cucumber (= long thin green vegetable) which is often pickled (= preserved in vinegar):

sounds kind of appetizing i don't know if i would eat it thouhg i don't really like things soaked in vinegar or pretty much vinegar at all (Laughing out loud)

Budgies are parrots, and Imotive, never let your cockatiel into your mouth. Any mouth bacteria is bad for the bird. Apparently, even a quick kiss. Better safe than sorry.

Surely a peck on the beak is fine! Its a bit like having kids you are told so many things are bad for them etc that the fun of motherhood is totally smashed to bits!

Chances are, it won't result in harm but there is the chance of it. Even a dry-lipped peck on the beak has it's risks (it's sad but human mouths are nasty things).

 

At the same time, I'm not going to sit here and say that I've never kissed my birds. I have a cockatiel who literally SHOVES his head against my lips and makes kissing noises and how on earth can I resist that? I try to give the dryest most ungermy kisses possible though. And I try not to do it often.

 

Thankfully, the budgies have grown out of their more cuddly attitudes. (I miss it though. )

Birds do have a very clean mouth. Yet, we, as humans, don't slobber all over our birds when we kiss them, but we lightly brush them with our lips. I don't think anyone ever makes out with their birds so our saliva really doesn't get into their mouth.

This also goes for sharing food with your bird. Don't let her/him near your food if you've just taken a bite and the saliva is still present. IE you take a bite out of an apple and then let your bird bite from the same place.
