Hello. I am new here. I have to say this forum has been really helpful. I have owned several budgies over the years but am still learning so much on this forum as well as being very entertained. I will post pics of my 2 darlings soon.

 

Anyway, I haven't come across this topic yet and need some advice/help. My new budgie (have had him-I think it's a he- for a couple weeks) often has a collection of poop stuck on his feathers surrounding his bum. He also has stainage (is that a word?) on these feathers all the time. Is this normal for a young budgie? Does it take time to begin good maintenace grooming? Are the feathers too long or something? Can anybody help? Thanks a lot

 

P.S. Newton is my new baby budgie. Babies are soooo cute!

Hello and welcome. I'm glad you've found the site - we've great people here. The feces shouldn't stick to his feathers. Have you called your vet's about it yet? If not, that would be my first course of action, to set up an appointment. They will probably do a gram stain to check for bacteria and yeast. Both conditions are easily (well, relatively - you'll get the hang of giving medicine ) treatable if that is the case.

 

Baby budgies ARE so cute, aren't they? What color are yours?

Sometimes Tobi my baby has a few poopies on her bottom I think its because she never eats or drinks much in her own cage she is far too busy noseying at what the others are up to but as soon as she is out with them her poops go okay - strange baby!

When I first got my three,they all had poo stuck to their vents for the first few days which I used to wash off gently but that always sorted the problem out,it didn't go on for a couple of weeks and I think was due to a change in their diet.Perhaps a quick check at the vet would ease your mind.

Blinkie had one poo stuck to his feathers the other day but i think he didn't bother lifting his tail. Has anyone else noticed how they sit down and lift their tails just as they poop. I notice because that's what Blinks does whenever he sits on me, like the sole reason he came over to me is to poo!

Thanks for the replies. I will give him a good cleaning tonight and see what happens. If it doesn't resolve itself I will take him to the vet.

Well first you must go on photobucket and make an account then you put your pictures in there you have 2 choices from there...1 is that you can make the account public and people could just clcik your link and view OR 2 you can click the picture link when your posting and you take the url from te photobucket image and paste it into the writing thing on the forum...anyways...there is a topic pinned abobut this so go look at that for further detail...the site is www.photobucket.com

Oh its normal (Laughing out loud) but it is really funny i guess it is just their way to get it out (Laughing out loud)

Thanks for all the replies. It turns out that Newton may have enteritis. We'll know soon if the antibiotic works, that is. I have my fingers crossed

 

Does anyone else have experience with this?
