poor peanut

Featured Replies

thanks guys, its good to know there are people out there who understand what this little fluffball means to me. i am so glad that i have got him though, someone might have brought him home for their children or something and he might well have ended up dumped in a bin or worse.

thank you all for caring, ive got some more pictures of my two boys to upload later :)

It may be completely different but it MIGHT be worth a try. My mum has a hands (sorry cant spell it) and when he was younger he had something wrong with one of his wings (not sure what I was too young to remember) he wasnt allowed to try to fly but was very friendly and used to coming out every day. He couldnt understand why my mum wouldnt let him out and was getting depressed so in the end she loosly tied a ribbon from his tummy to above his wings and he sat on her shoulder happily without trying to fly off for 6 weeks. Would that be worth a go?

Sounds like a good idea. I can't think of anything worse for the poor little guy than feeling poorly, and then being rejected (in his mind) by his Mum. If his routine can be kept as much as possible, then it would surely help him recuperate faster. I'm no believer in wing clipping, but this might also be a solution.

lin theres no need for his wings to be clipped, he doesnt have any flight or tail feathers due to a disease he has. i will post some pictures later if you would like to see, there is also a topic about it, this is the link:

(scroll down until you get to my really long post)

but this is still part of the problem because he still tries to fly even though he cant. he just thuds to the floor like a little stone budgie (despite my best effort to only let him go a few centimeters off the floor)

i think the ribbon is a really good idea, i might give it a go, although i will have to find a suitable material to do it because i wouldnt want to cut into or put too much pressure on the cyst.

he hasnt been very active today and casper seems to be lookng after him as he hasnt come out for a fly as long as he usually does - he keeps going back to the cage to see peanut.

thanks for all your suggestions guys, i really appreciate it

Did the vet explain the procedure to you for removing the cyst? What does it entail?

she didnt really explain it, as she said it should only be the last resort as he probably wouldnt survive the operation.

she just said that it would involve him going under anaesthetic and she would have to cut the cyst away and remove the feather follicle to try and stop the cyst from recurring. (which it might do anyway because of his troubles landing).

she didnt say anything else :)

I remember reading some where that a feather cyst can be treated by adding iodine to the water,

Ask youre vet about this i dont remember what the dosage was but i think it was one drop to 20 ml of water.

I can remember it was an old book written by cyrl rogers who was a very well known budgerigar breeder of his time.

GILL. :)

Also, maybe if you can't get him to an avian vet just yet you could try and call one to see if they'd talk with you about it? Maybe they'd have some insight or be familiar with what gillian mentioned. I hope everything turns out for the best.

Poor little mite. Unfortunately he has to be unique, he can't just have a common problem that we could all help with. Good luck, and give him a kiss from Aunty Lin, tell him I said 'Don't be so awkard'

Poor little guy! He's proved he's a fighter though so i'm sure he'll get over this hurdle too.

Ask another Avain vet and see what they say.

I thought they would have been able to drain (can't think of the correct word) the

cyst. I had it done to one of mine, and also myself, but then maybe it is a different type.

All my finger, legs and toes are crossed for little peanut

Cindy

Im so sorry you have this latest trauma..Both you and Peanut have had such a hard time.. I havent been online for a while and I couldnt believe this when I first read it.. I hope and pray the little fluff ball gets sorted for you.. Good luck , I will hope and pray for a good result :(

in all honesty i have been reading up and as the lump is brown and solid it sounds to me like a fatty lump because i always thought cysts had water inside them?

i have looked up the iodine treatment and didnt find much, apart from the 20ml measurement. but i will keep looking.

i think i will phone the avian centre and explain the situation to them and see if they can do anything. its such a complicated story to tell over the phone so i think they will ask me to bring him in! (Laughing out loud)

i will see what i can do

Is there more can be done for a fatty lump? Is that what you want me to pray for? (Laughing out loud) We'll all send out prayers, just tell us what you want (and unfortunately this problem being a bad dream is a bit out of reach! We're good, but not that good)

either way its not a good thing! whatever it is i would like some answers. i have heard good things about 'bruce' the bird vet.

grrrr! not open on wednesdays. i will give him a call tomorrow, if i can get through - he is obviously in high demand as they are only open for calls for an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening!

Well i hope you get through to him. I really hope this lump doesn't cause problems for Peanut.

How does Peanut look this morning

Cindy

sometimes he loks okay sometimes he doesnt. he sleeps a lot, he always has - he needs to conserve his energy for constantly making new feathers.

i am a little worried that he isnt eating very well, he is eating - just not a lot. i put some brocolli in the cage which is his fave and he hardly touched it. i dont think he is feeling his best at the moment.

Hope he is going to be okay!

Oi where are these pics you said you had to upload Ive not seen them yet hehe!
