i ordered some caribbean crunch beak appetit today. i also ordered le grass cafe that i have heard so much about. i hope they like it, but i suspect that the beak appetit will be a thumbs down for now!

 

my two like anything green so hopefully they will take to the wheat grass quite quickly.

 

anyone else had any luck yet?

Oooh, I want to try those things!! Just have to convince husband to pay for bird food that has to be cooked. Can you tell that it drives me nuts to have to budget? Oh, well....I can stay home & raise my kids, so I suppose it's worth it. Let me know your success stories.

Bea, I've noticed a lot of health food shops and those fruit drink places, sell the wheat grass as a drink, but also have trays of the grass on their counters.

Maybe they can sell you some, or at least tell you where to buy it.

I do know it is grown in Aussie as Fred (hubby and ex farmer) told me where, but now I forget. Will ask him again. IF he remembers.

Mine eat it really well now. I'll have to get some pictures - they look so funny with all those smushy grains all over their beaks. You might try what I did to get them started - I broke off some of the small heads from a sprig of millet. I hand-fed the millet to the birds...just enough for a taste so they really really wanted it and knew exactly what I was holding. Then I stuck the small heads into the Beak Appetit, sprinkled a few seeds on it, and gave it to them. I made sure they saw me do it. Yes, they will pick out the seeds at first. But once you can get them close to the food (that's the trick - mine were scared of it at first - LOL) to where they will pick the seeds out, the battle is 90% over. Because as they pick the seeds out, they get little tastes of the food. At first they will probably spit it out and shake their little heads at the weird texture, and give you one of those LOOKS, but they will try it, even though it is by accident.

Is the Caribbean crunch a dry food?

no. all beak appetit products you have to add water to and cook it it looks quite nice in the packet.

They smell great. I tasted some too, it's good. I'd eat the leftovers myself if they didn't walk around in it!

 

So far, they don't really have a preference for a particular flavor. The only thing I noticed is that they won't eat it as much while it is still warm. They wait for it to cool to room temperature before they start their serious eating. I don't give it to them hot obviously, but they eat it more after it's been sitting for a few minutes.

hmmm, well i cooked the beak appetit today. and i didnt realise just how smushy it really is! is it meant to be like that or did i do it wrong? they wont choke on it will they? (Laughing out loud)! i dont have a clue.

LOL, they won't choke on it. It is a little smushy, but if you let it sit covered on the stove to cool a lot of the water gets absorbed and it is not so smushy. Did your birds try it or were they afraid of it? :nest:

(Laughing out loud) well, casper put his beak in but he didnt touch it. i think he smelled it and it put him off a bit. i have to say, the smell did make me feel sick! i hate cinnamon and it smells so strong.

 

peanut didnt so much as look at it. but thats understandable. he is very poorly at the moment again.

 

i have given it a go, but to be honest i dont think i will buy it again, just because i hate the smell so much!

Just try a different flavor, they don't all smell like cinnamon. :nest: Cream of Tweet or Nuts for Alfredo aren't bad. I took some video today of mine in the wheatgrass, I'll convert them and post them soon. It's funny.

dont they? oh cool. i tried to pick the one that sounded the least cinnamony but my plan failed! (Laughing out loud). its all good, because any leftovers and if they decide they dont like it i will give it to my neighbours. they have an african grey that might like it :nest:
