Hi Guys!

I need your help! :D I'm doing a research report thingy for science and i'm doing "Which type of paper is most effective on the bottom of a bird cage?". Part of the assignment is doing a survey so i thought i'd ask you guys! :D Could you vote and then say what you chosed and why.

Thanks heaps!

Bea

i dont know what to select bacuse i would say a grill then it doesnt really matter whats underneath it (Laughing out loud), beacasie budgies dont spend much time on the cage floor and if they decide to do so then they cant get to the poop

I dont know if it is the most efficiant but i use white paper...(they normal computer A4 white sheets) just because it looks nice and neat..(well untill they poop on it). and can easily see and monitor droppings and i dont have to cut it to size and all just put i sheet in each corner.. they overlap and yeah !

good luck with your assignment ! hope u get top marks !

I use nothing on my inside cage. No reason, except I'm a lazy cow. On my outside aviaries I use sand, which is great for the dropped seed, as it grows and they can eat the shoots. It gets replaced at different intervals for different birds, depending upon the necesity. Good luck with your assignment!

I use newspaper because it is very sanitary, shows any changes in droppings very easily, safe if they shred it (or ingest it), easily attainable, and allows me to recycle. It is also very easy to change, and doesn't harbor molds like other bedding types might. I have a grill at the bottom of the cage too.

Best of luck on your paper!

I actually either newspaper or plain paper towels but I could only vote for one so I voted for paper towels.

I like both because they're safe and the droppings show up well against them. Droppings show up better on the white paper towels so I've been using them more than newspaper. Also, it's easier to manipulate paper towels as you can tear off a small section at a time instead of cutting or folding newspaper in odd places. My cages have grates but my birds often try their hardest to rip at whatever is beneathe the grate.

I use white paper towel in the small cages, and newspaper in the big one. But I put mine over the grate, as my birds (mainly tweetie) like picking up the grates and banging it back down over and over and over until i feel like banging them

I voted paper towel or as I call it kitchen roll hehe, I do however use newspaper under the grill on the big cage and paper towel on top of it (they hate the grill) and the white monitors the poops really well and value kitchen roll here isnt very expensive although more expensive than newspaper!

I voted for sandpaper because that is what I'm using at the moment, but when this has run out I will probably start to use kitchen towel.Newspaper over here is quite toxic because of the inks used and the dye can come off on our hands so I wouldn't want to use it in the cage.

Julie

I use sandpaper because I find it cheap and easy to use. :P

i voted for sandpaper because i can buy it to fit my cage almost exactly so it only needs a little trim to fit nicely into the corners :P

and its not so bad if it gets a bit wet when i move the cage, from water dripping out of the drinker or if i give them a spray bath. it doesnt go all soggy and is easy to remove.

i am worried about the inks in some papers and my birds do not shred sandpaper like they would with newspaper or towels.

good luck with your project bea!

I voted for other because I use newspaper AND white paper!!

Thanks guys! I'm about to go finish my assignment now! You've been sooo helpful! :)

Newspaper. It costs no thing and it soaks up nthe mess. :P

I use newspaper and white paper. I put the newspaper down and the white paper on top. My budgies are horible chewers and I dont have a grill, so I like to have two layers because they move the paper away and then the trays get dirtyer.

Also I prefer that they chew on the white paper (just in case).

I thought that sand paper was bad to use? Because if they tried to bite the grit off and eat some of the glue it would be bad for them.... and stuff like that?

I heard similar things about sandpaper. My aunt used it once and had it in her cage when she took him to the vet and they actually made her remove it and put paper they gave her in :(Laughing out loud):

Yeah, it's probably not ideal to use for budgies. It probably came about back when everyone thought budgies had to have grit. That's just my theory anyway. :P

I guess it wouldn't be so bad if you have a grate/grill at the bottom of the cage but even with that, my budgies usually find a way to pick at things down there every now and then.

Im at a bit of a loss as to what to use on Tobis cage at the moment Ive some spare sandpaper sheets that fit but she is ripping them up and am scared she is eating it, so I put in newspaper she also ripped that up and Im scared of what the ink might do, sooooooo I used paper towel she decided to pull it all up and sit underneath it hehe.

I guess I might try A4 white paper and cut it down to size, dont know what else to try other than nothing but she has a habit of climbing upside down on the top of the cage and falling right to the floor so really I need something to stop her hurting herself on the plastic floor.

As you can see Ive got a little tinker of a girlie here hehe!

When Piper was a baby she'd rip up anything I lined the cage with and then play underneathe it. It was adorable!! Most newsprint is made with safe ink (they're trying to avoid lawsuits in case babies eat it) but if you're unsure you could call the office that runs a certain paper? Just use the black and white bits and never the color.

If you have a grill/grate that you can put in the bottom of the cage that helps a lot. It also keeps them away from their droppings so it's a bit more sanitary.

Yeah thanks Eterri unfortunately the small quarantine cage she is in doesnt have a grill its was Pattys first ever cage.

I will give the newspaper another try she will probably grow out of it eventually and in 3 more weeks she will hopefully be able to join another birdie in one of the other cages and her boredom will be over so maybe then she will stop eh?

Yeah. :P Piper stopped playing under the paper eventually. I guess it's something babies like for some reason?

Yeah and I guess its a girl thing too eh hehehe. Im sure I can put up with it because I love her being a baby she is just too cute!

I use sand paper for the bottom of my cage and I know it's not the best. Soda and Pony like to cruise around down there so I don't want to use newspaper because of the ink. What is the best thing to use?
