may get a second bird

At the moment I am not at university and my mother isn't working so theres at least one person in the house for most of the day. I only have one budgie at the moment and as she has company so often I'm not really bothered about getting her a friend as I've read here that its not necessary if she has human company so much.

But in September, my mum will be working and I will be going back to university and I don't know how many days a week I'll be at uni so therefore I was thinking about getting my Little Bird a friend to keep her company.

Here is a picture of her cage from the front : http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v282/Lysine/f2f64bec.jpg

and from the side : http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v282/Lysine/6fef6421.jpg

(with CDs to compare the size). Would this be an okay size to keep two budgies in? It looks a bit too small to me so maybe after a while I could upgrade but would this be okay? (I'll have a second cage with the new bird in to start with obviously).

Also can anyone recommend any type of cage or a particular manufacturer that makes good cages?

No this wouldn't really be big enough for two birds. You could make this one your quarantine cage though. I think a lot of people have Rekord4 cages.Made by Ferplast, these are the only ones I've had so can't really compare with others.

Obviously the bigger the better especially as two birds will have to spend some time in the cage.

Have a look on EBay you can get some enormous cages on there, where they would be really happy!

Great thats your getting your birdy a new friend.

That cage looks way too small to me for two birds, I would definitely think about getting one at least twice the size so there is plenty of room for them to exercise if they are going to be left alone in their cage for long periods.

Hope this helps!

i think that cage is at the very minimum for one bird never mind two, what are the dimesions? i have two budgies in a cage that is 60cmX60cmX167cm and they seem pretty happy in that, although they aren't in it most of the time :o75_1_b.JPG

that only cost me ?100 off ebay with free delivery, i just had to put it up myself , i would say that you need a cage at least double the size of that one but get one as big as you can afford just make sure that bar spacing isnt too big :(

Ohh I like the look of that cage! I know lots of people who keep rats in that kind of cage, put extra shelves and hammocks and things in it!

I didn't even think of Ferplast even though I have a Ferplast rat cage. I like the look of the Rekord 6 here, http://www.ferplast.com/en/pagina_182.html. I'm suspicious, it looks like they've shruken the size of the birds inside to make it look bigger  maybe its just my eyes!

I'll have a look on ebay thanks for all your help! So quickly too! :o

i have got a ferplast rekord 4. Its plenty big enough for two birds if they get fly time. It doesn't take up alot of space either.

yes ebay would be your best bet.good luck and let us know how you get on

you know them ladder type things that are in the Rekord 4 can they be bought seperatley i like the look of them :D

Mine HATE it! If you pm me your address you can have it!

Julie

i reckon you bagged yourself a bargain their Andy!! (Laughing out loud)

Going,going,.......................

Even that one is too small for the birds they have shown in the pictures.

The minimum for even one budgie is 18"x18"x18" (which is about 46x46x46 in centimeters). Definitely try Ebay, you'll probably find a much better deal! Try to avoid cages that are too skinny as well. I've seen a lot cages that give enough width but are lacking in depth and it just seems like the bird is living inside a wall since the space from front to back is so skinny.

Hope that helps!

Andy.. that cage is more then enough for like 10 birds......

a good cage size for a pair of budgies withought going to big would be some Cockatiel starte kit cages....

Thats the cage i orogionall put Buddy in and he and tweety shared it for a while until i got the wardrobe cage for all 4

But this is the smallest i would suggest for a pair of birds... i put all 4 in it when i clean the big cage and they fit in their nicely with no problems so im sure its a good size for a pair of budgies

im sorry no, cockatiel cages are unsuitable for budgies to the point of being DANGEROUS. do not buy a cockatiel cage for a pair of budgies. the bar spacings are far too wide for them.

i think the cage is too small for two budgies to live in. yes they would both fit into it but i think it would be rather like forcing a chicken to live in a carry crate for the rest of its life, especially as you said the budgies wont be out of the cage much as you are going away and your mum is at work.

this is my cage:

this has plenty of space for the birds to flutter from perch to perch and spread their wings to the full. they will be very comfortable while you are away with something of a similar size. it is the largest budgie cage available from pets at home.

What do you think of mine? :)

Got it off Ebay :D

Sheesh Daz, rub it in and post it twice why dont you!!!!!

Damn I love your cage daz.

Adam why did it double post?? :D

and I love the cage too :)

i was just trying to say the bigger the better, especially if they are not gonna come out everyday :D

That cage is well bing enough for 2 budgies to nicely fit in and the bar spacings are the same as a budgies cage. It is a cockatiel starter cage but its not suitable for a pair of cockatiels like it says but its just perfect for a pair of budgies. Im the biggest freak on having a big enough cage for my birds and iknow that cage is big enough for a pair of budgies to fly a bit and live in peace

and all i said was this is about the cage size minimum you could go for a pair of flighted budgies

yes it is the bare minimum, with a few hours flying time out of the cage each day. if nash is going away to uni and his mum going to be working then there obviously wont be that much time for them to play outside the cage that much. thats why i think they need a much bigger cage. :( i was not critisizing your judgement of cage size - just pointing out what is best suited for nash's circumstances. my budgies still get an hour or so out of the cage most days but would be perfectly comfortable to live in there while i was away on holiday for instance without being let out.

however, i would never ever recommend anyone buying a cockatiel cage for a budgie. worst case scenario a budgie could get its head trapped through the bar spacing, panic and strangle itself. which im sure nobody wants. cockatiel cages in general have larger spacing than budgie cages and are unsuitable for use. i have never seen a cockatiel cage with budgie size bar spacing? (Laughing out loud)

just thought i would point that out, as some passing members may be confused by that comment and we really dont want to hear of another tragic story.

I think most cages advertised as "cockatiel" cages are, like pixie said, going to have bar spacing that is far too wide for a budgie. However, just shop for "small bird cages" and you can find HUGE ones with 1/2 inch spacing. And for the record, most "cockatiel starter kits" aren't big enough for even one cockatiel. Same with budgie starter kits. They're more ideal for travel cages, at least that's been my experience. For two budgies I'd suggest trying to get a cage that is at least 22-24 inches on all sides, especially if this is where the birds will be spending most of their time. If they're going to be out for several hours a day you can get by with a bit smaller but always buy the biggest you can afford with the right bar spacing.

okay i know but the makers of this cage are idiots! i know loads of people who use this cage also ones of the same size for many more birds bigger then budgies... and it all depends on how oyu have it set up.. the picture i showed of the cage it looks itsy bitsy because it was origionally set up for Buddy who has splayed leg and has mobility broblems so it looks itsy bitsy.. Cockatiel cage with Budgie sized bar spacings... its wierd

(Laughing out loud)! yeah it was a little confusing when i read it :( i think the bar spacings ultimately define the cage type though, so that is one messed up company!

i think what we are trying to say is get the biggest one you can afford as long as the spacing is the correct size! :D

i agree the bigger the better, its only fair if we are going to keep pets caged up for any amount of time, they need space to fly and feel cared and looked after, and as much near their natural habitat as possible, but also entertained. My parents looked after 02 budgies earlier this year, and they were crammed into this tiny little cage, with loads and loads of toys hung everywhere, there was no way they could possibly fly without bashing into something, I said they were downright cruel, and my father agreed (well there is always a first time) so in the 02 weeks my parents took care of them, they took out there toys, and got them out of the cage to fly around their home, (the poor little budgies weren't even used to coming out of the cage or being petted. :(
