Milo is biting - and not just pecking but quite painfully biting. It's all to do with this 'stepping up' problem. I am trying to teach him that, to get out of the cage, he has to step up on to my finger. He. however, has decided that to get out of the cage, he just has to force his way out as soon as the door opens - the finger is merely an obstacle in the way and so is bitten. I have tried gently blowing him and saying 'no' without raising my voice - he is then put back in the cage to teach him that it is wrong, but neither of these things are working. HELP!

Oh the joys of training hehe!

Sorry Lilly but he sounds like such a rascal - love him!

Id stop using your finger and use a perch or branch instead..no matter how much he bites he cant hurt you then ..he will notice soon!! My Bitey (hence the name) bites and draws blood everytime but shes much better since I use the stick/perch.. I also put a teat on it so she knew it was a nice stick...

Good luck..

If he bites you and gets put back in the cage, he's probably still biting because thats exactly what he wants. My budgie bites me when he doesnt want to come out....

I would just cover the door with your hands and DENY him access to leave the cage. I've discovered that the absolute best way to curb biting is that once they've grabbed hold, quickly but CAREFULLY and SMOOTHLY deliver an opposing force back towards them and somewhat downward, basically so that attempting to hold the bite throws them off balance somewhat. It doesn't require much movement and if you decide to try it please use too LITTLE force at first until you find the right technique, but it has worked wonders beyond flinching, ceding defeat, yanking away, saying "no", and all the other methods. Budgies may be small, and they may be delicate, but they can be EXTREMELY pushy as you know. They respond to equal and opposite pushiness without being harsh or too sudden, like I said I've experienced phenomonal results with this method versus NO results with any other method. I have adopted the philosiphy that months and months of appeasement is FAR more stressful for both the human and the bird, as opposed to a few days of deliberate and unwavering "tough love". Months and months of appeasement still equals an extremely stressed out bird, I don't think meeting them on their level creates much more stress; in fact it seemed to instill an immediate respect as long as the movements were careful, fluid and not too forceful. Love him, but DON'T let him boss you around!!! Hope this helps :D
