Posted May 26, 200520 yr Well its not really an Avian vets but theyve just taken on a guy who works Wednesday and Thursdays who is very knowledgeable in bird care I know its not ideal but this vets is very reputable and looked after my pooch for 15 healthly years and its the nearest in 2 hours drive. Anyway Im taking them along next week for check ups so I will let you know my opinion on him!
May 26, 200520 yr Thats great but what a shame its so far away... Dont forget to let us know what they are like
May 26, 200520 yr Author Oh no this one is in my town about 15 mins drive - the other avian vets are more than 2 hours away - sorry if I didn't explain that properly.
May 26, 200520 yr I was about to say, I wouldn't drive 2 hours for a dog/cat vet, (Laughing out loud). I don't know...be careful with it. An avian vet would be worth the 2 hour drive. The dog and cat vet may have been great with your dog but birds are so very different. I'm not saying he's a bad vet but small animal (dog/cat) vets just don't go through the same extensive training in birds that an avian vet does. It's too bad there aren't more of them.
May 26, 200520 yr Author Yeah I know your strong views on this and appreciate it really I do but apparently this is a new vet thats does 2 days a week and specialises in birds he aint the vet my dog went to just the same surgery - anyway my birds arent sick and it cant hurt to take them along to see what he says dont you think?
May 26, 200520 yr I don't see how it would hurt anything to take them in for a checkup just to see how the vet is, no. Maybe he's a great one. Just be skeptical. A vet is someone we really have to trust because we're not veterinarians. Personally, I need to see a certificate hanging on the wall to show that this person has been taught how to diagnose and treat my birds before I feel comfortable letting them poke and prod them. Not saying that a certificate automatically makes them a good vet, but at least it shows that they've gone through the proper training. Once I know they're trained, I can trust their judgement a lot more. So, yeah. Sorry for rambling. Just be really observant and ask the vet a lot of questions. Test his knowledge, there's nothing wrong with that and if he's really experienced he'll probably be happy to answer your questions without hesitating.
May 26, 200520 yr Author Yeah I will I just thought that it may well be worth bearing in mind as the nearest avian vets is at least 2 hours drive and would preferably like something a little nearer if they get poorly. Anyway we will go along and see what he is like he might be awful but he might be okay. Im the kind of person who likes to see to believe so thats what we will do!
