okay Guys here goes. Remember that I can ONLY judge on what I can see in the photo.

A flattering photo can make the world of difference and can make an average bird look great so this is more about what we can see in the pics.

You will notice that I have actually DQ'ed one bird. You'll see why.

Thanks for the entries though - it's quite a challenge trying to get them into a sensible order but I hope you see why I've gone the way I have.

Entry 1 - 7th - I like this little bird but her age has let her down somewhat. If she were at a show I'd tell the owner to bring her back next month! Nice mask and good feather. She could have more directional feather and frontal rise. The tiny tail and wings give away her youth. This photo also does nothing to show off size or deportment.

Gbyellowfaceop.jpg

Entry 2 - I really can't award this bird a place as she is clearly not a UBC. Even with the out of focus photo I can quite clearly see an iris ring and her cere is an clearly adult coloured brown hen cere. Sorry to the owner as she is really a classy bird. Please enter her into an adult class and she should do very well for you.

Gbalbino.jpg

Entry 3 - 2nd Place - A nice young hen. She looks to have good size and nice directional feather. It does look from the photo, as if she could do with a touch more width through the top of her shoulders and neck. Obviously it's hard to see frontal rise from this front on picture but she does look to have a reasonable amount there as well as of feather on the cap and she's got a pretty good depth of mask.

mattwelchmansgreygreencin.jpg

Entry 4 - 8th - It's a bit hard to tell anything about this little guy from the photo apart from he is a little on the small side and doesn't have a great depth of mask or much feather on top of his head or over his eye. He is reasonably well balance but could have a bit more length of body.

enrty4Corka.jpg

Entry 5 - 10th. This girl has a nice depth of mask but has little directional feather of frontal rise. She is very overweight (or looks it due to the photo) and has bad wing carriage.

entry5Corka.jpg

Entry 6 - 9th Sorry to the owner of this little girl. I know it's a photo comp but I've been asked to judge as I would in a normal show and this little girl is too young and the photo really shows very little apart from her nice mask and the fact that she is slightly narrow over the cere (but probably the way she is being held too that's not helping her).

entry6.jpg

Entry 7 - 5th - although a bit scruffy in the photo (handling marks I think), this is quite a nice youngster with some promise. Good depth of mask, reasonable feather on top and over the cere. Hard to tell anything useful about deportment but he does look to be a nice sort of bird.

enrty7.jpg

Entry 8 - 3rd place. Hmmmm I'm not 100% confident that this is still technically a UBC but the convenient placing of the cage bars has hidden the eye well enough for her to get away with it! A very nicely balanced reasonably strong hen of good size and nice deportment. Could do with more feather above the eyes and on the cap and suffers from the usual lack of frontal rise on hens. She'll grow into a useful stud bird!

entry8-1.jpg

Entry 9 - 6th - This little boy needs that bit more directional feather across the top of his cere as well as more depth of mask. He does look to have quite good feather over the top of his head though.

entry9.jpg

Entry 10 - 1st Place - Congratualtions!!!

Remembering that this is judged only on what I can see and this little bird would be exactly what I'm looking for on the show bench. Very nice rise up and forward from the cere and lovely directional feather (very nice photography to do this little bird justice too!). Good depth of mask and still quite definitely a UBC even without seeing the eyes. It's a bit hard to judge overall size of course as well as what is going on behind the perch! The one fault that I would be careful of here is the non-gripping toe (just visable in this picture) but given the benefit of the doubt that if this bird was moved around a bit, we would see the toe grip. A nice showy little bird too.

entry10.jpg

Entry 11 - 4th Place. A fairly young cock whose photo has probably let it down somewhat as he looks a little short in the body in this picture. He does have nice directional feather that could be a bit longer but being a spangle, no evident spots at this age has let him down in the length of mask department making him look a little short there too. Great spangle wing markings and hopefully he'll have some nice spangle spot grow in to complement that as he matures.

Thank you Gina for judging it was wonderful to see your remarks. I thought it was a real learning curve for a lot of us about when a unbroken cap is not an unbroken cap.

Thank you everyone that entered and the next show will be in February unless you would all like another one now, if so reply on here to let me know.

The next show will be Normal blue (sky, cobalt, mauve and violet class any age). But the birds need to be in show condition, spotted etc. Old photos will be excepted because it will early in the year.

Great idea Julie and thanks to Gina for judging and explaining the selections. I am sorry I missed it but I just haven't had the time to take photos due to a work month from ***. On holidays now woohoo!

Would be easier fro the judge if a front and side profile of the whole bird is exhibited. Then the judge can explain the strengths and weaknesses of each exhibit.

Congrats guys. Myself i had a terrible breeding season, lost a heap of chicks.

2 nests gave me birds, 1 was a pet/show breeding so not any good to keep and the other i got a few, kept 3 and lost the 2 best ones of that in the last heatwave. Suspected cocci. The remaing one is terrible, runt and just nothing of worth.

Oh well there is next year!

Entry 8 came first at the state team challenge yesterday, but the judges decided to send forth place and sixth place to represent NSW. They wonder why the numbers are down at all the shows including the state selection, what a joke. A bird is good enough to come first it's good enough to go away one week later .It's like going up to a formula 1 driver and saying " listen mate we know you got poll position on Saturday but for whatever reason politics has reared it's ugly head & we don't want you to turn up for the race on Sunday". The judges have decided to place forth position and sixth position on poll instead , but hey thanks for coming and making an effort. Oh and by the way we would like you to be an alternate incase either forth place or sixth place gets sick or something like that.
