Mealworms

hey, a while back my nanna was telling me she used to give her birds mealworms. can u give budgies mealworms ?

My budgie eats mealworms. It started off when I gave my quails some and she saw them eating so she tried some. Now whenever they are given some, she goes crazy and rushes down to eat them.... I would like to hear what others think about it too... as I know that mealworms are very high in protein... even quails are limited to 6 per day.

And it's quite painful to watch her eat them as she hulls them like seeds!

Mealworms are good source of protien. i can remember an old 1970's book on Budgerigars suggesting Mealworms.

Hmmm I've got mealworm colonies for the frogs. Might try and give the budgies some.

I have mealworms for my reptiles and tried them with my budgies. They were terrified ! They tried to peck them and then **** themselves when they moved. But agree they are good for them.

You can try but they won't eat it. Budgies are herbivores, therefore they do not eat very many bugs.

Try telling my budgies that they are herbivores. They cannablise they own deads and each chicken from chicken carcasses. They ARE neophobes though (scared of new things) and probably won't eat mealworms unless they experienced them as youngsters. Maybe crushed into softfood would be the way to go.

Sorry Charly......disagree with you totally here....and when others higher up in this topic have said they have fed them and the birds ate them too means it doesnt pay to say no categorically. Read other topics on our forum.........especially the meat protein topic :D

If a budgie dies during the night in my aviary, by the time I get to it in the morning,,,,,,,,,they have cracked open the skull, eaten all the beak, half the head, the brain, the eyes, the tongue, most of the chest, the feet etc.

Proof budgies do seek meat protein and eat it......all kinds.

My budgies probably have never seen a mealworm, and if they have, they don't notice it, so that's probably why they don't eat them. :)

You have dragons??? You must be from Westeros...

Just kidding...

I read this and tried giving mealworms which is commonly called here as superworms...

I mixed them in feeding dish with sunflower and oat groats which are their favorites....

But the moment they saw something moving at the dish,

my male one panic and didn't even cared even for the sunflower and oats...

Maybe its not for mine...

But watching their reaction to something new is always fun and worth it.....
