Posted May 12, 200520 yr This information is from http://www.cleos-corner.com/ParrotGeneralInformation.html and the articles sited are also worth visiting. Is cat saliva really toxic to birds? Here are a few quotes from some web sites. To read the full account click on the links: "Cat saliva contains a bacteria that is usually fatal to birds unless the appropriate antibiotic is administered." Maine Audubon "Having cat saliva on a birds feathers is enough to introduce an infection that could kill the bird." (Parrot Passions UK) "Even saliva from a cat transferred to a bird can cause them to become ill and die. If ever your bird has contact with a cat--even if this contact seems incidental--an immediate vet visit is in order." (Parrot Parrot: Cats and Birds article) "Cats commonly have Pasteurella bacteria as part of their natural flora. While this bacteria is ubiquitous in cats and does them no harm, it is DEADLY to birds. Even if your cat just bats your bird or gets saliva on your bird, you could end up with a dead bird." (Parrot Parrot: Alerts page) "Regardless, contact with a cat's saliva, which contains a bacteria deadly to birds called Pasteurella, could be fatal." (Parrot Chronicles: Hazards Page) Can human saliva make my bird sick? My vet is VERY adament about not allowing birds to come into contact with human saliva. So much so that he does not even want parrot owners to give a little kiss on the head. To back him up here are some quotes from the web: From Parrot Chronicles, "Human saliva is not in itself toxic, of course. And your bird cannot catch a human cold from you. However, all mammalian saliva carries bacteria that could make your bird sick with infections of the sinuses, throat, lungs, air sacs, gastro-intestinal tract or internal organs. Therefore, never let your bird make contact with your mouth--even for a quick "peck"--and do not bite off food for your bird." And from ExoticPet.net, "Our mouths contain many microbes that can cause disease in birds, and contact with the human mouth should be strictly prohibited." Edited May 12, 200520 yr by devvle
May 12, 200520 yr the smae will be true for dogs then wont it?.. my budgies and dogs play with the same toys, i'll stop that straight away thanks devvle
May 12, 200520 yr sound a bit over the top to me yes it can kill bird both cat and human silva but just a drop of it on then Bbird ????? has anyone tested this, (yes I know that sounds bad but people to test these silly things)
May 13, 200520 yr I do agree that the information is a bit exaggerated in places. It's a lot like chocolate being poisonous to dogs I think. It's true but no need for a panic. Just something you should be wary about. I think it's good to know though. Just so that people don't deliberately expose their budgies to those dangers.

May 13, 200520 yr Yeah, I probably should have added that thought to my post to begin with. I don't want people freaking out because they kissed their budgie today or something.
May 13, 200520 yr Well i couldn't survive without giving Blinkie little kisses. What do they think we'll do? Slime up our lips for a nice sloppy kiss?
May 13, 200520 yr Well i couldn't survive without giving Blinkie little kisses. What do they think we'll do? Slime up our lips for a nice sloppy kiss? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> (Laughing out loud)! Well, I've seen lots of pictures of people putting budgies in their mouths so maybe that's more of what they had in mind? And some people feed budgies off their tongues. Personally, I don't want to be pooped on inside of my mouth.
May 13, 200520 yr No...poop in the mouth is very unpleasant! I once had Tweety on my nose and she pooped in my mouth and i spat it across the room onto my friend and then she started screaming and jumping around. :(Laughing out loud): Pretty funny really but kinda gross!
May 13, 200520 yr !!!!!!!! Omg I would have died! You are definitely an abused budgie owner. I am just... so sorry. Maybe we can find a support group. Or maybe your birds can get counseling to help them with their owner abuse issues.
May 13, 200520 yr Yes...i'm a very mistreated pet owner. So sad.....i think we need a budgie group to help them controll their owner abuse. :(Laughing out loud):
May 13, 200520 yr I kiss my budgies all the time - mind you I never get intimate enough to saliva on them hehe!

And i'm not about to intentionally sample some fresh bird poop. Andy....i was about to say the paper one the floor but then realised that i've eaten paper before. :glare: I haven't eaten a perch yet.... :(Laughing out loud):
May 13, 200520 yr ..........and I read these forums.....Why??? :glare: To find out what budgie poop tastes like. and what to do if the refrigerator is empty.....eat a perch :glare:
May 13, 200520 yr Dad likes it....or he usually buys it from takeaway shops....i think it's cause it's the cheapest one though! :(Laughing out loud):
May 13, 200520 yr Ewww.....i hate touching cuttlefish! I am not eating it! :(Laughing out loud): I think i'll leave perch to budgies and my dad too. Both types don't really appeal to me. How about someone else gives it a go! Someone else be the guinea pig! :(Laughing out loud):
