I have been trying to tame my two budgies for a while now, but...I need SERIOUS help. They are older then 4 months I think...(the male has a little dark grey around his eye...the girl has almost a purple eye so she has a lighter purple-ish color around her eye. They have tags, but they won't let me read them...I have tried holding a treat in my hand so they come closer, but they just ignore me or reach their neck out to eat it. They don't perch on me at all. When I first got them, they couldn't fly (flight feathers clipped) so I used to pick them up. Now that they can fly, they won't let me. Every time I put my hand in the cage, they go to the other side. One time they climbed on the roof of the cage!

 

Please help me!

We have 2 budgies that are a similar age to yours....and also had the same issues in training, however they now lets us put our hands in the cage and they will perch on fingers, arms, shoulders once out of the cage every time

 

It takes patience (sometimes very annoying i know) but the birds seemed to gain confidence and trust quickly once that initial barrier is broken

 

e.g. they stayed in the cage every time we cleaned it out and eventually learned to trust us (these days when we clean the cage they either sit outside the cage on top of it or even on my shoulder while i do it

 

most important things to do is talk to then when ur hand is in the cage, praise them when they do good and dont overdo it with training

Also, when you are trying to tame two birds at the same time, it's more difficult. Try removing one, and just concentrate on taming one bird at a time.

Try this, too: since you said they will stretch out their necks to eat the millet from your hand, hold it at a distance from their perch, so that if they really want it, they have no choice but to step onto your hand to reach it. (Or at least far enough for them to have to put one foot on you, to start, and then two feet.)

Training 2 birds at once isnt as hard as the so called experts claim...our birds follow each other so in fact we have found it pretty succesfull

 

dont also beleive what the book tells you, branch out people and try new thing

 

I wish you the best in training.....by the way a guy i know fed his budgie boiled egg.....dont do that!!! feed them seeds, grasses and some fruits

 

 

a pet store i knwo also recommended feeing them BBQ chicken....i was disgusted at this suggestion but due to censors in this forum i cant name this store

A lot a people feed their budgies boiled egg. In fact a number of breeders recommend boiled egg and egg shells ground up finely for added calcium. What else is egg and biscuit??

 

And I have read a post of Kaz's where the discussion was about feeding show birds chicken.

 

You are better off trying your budgies some veges too, rather than fruits. things such as corn on the cob, fingers of carrots, beetroot, leafy greens like spinach, bok choy - any asian greens. Most will over time if you persevere, eat bits of veges and maybe some fruit like apple but generally the fruit is a bit of a waste.

Thanks, everyone! I have been trying to lift the millet away from the perch, it works a little, and my new budgie lets me pet her, so thats good, right? I will try everything except seperate them because when I do that, they both go crazy!!! Thanks again! Any tips are welcome!

I dont know that I would be attempting to pet them at this stage, they are still developing trust and petting can be seen as pretty scary by most birds and a lot dont really like it, as much as we want to stroke those beautiful soft feathers. Just keep persisting with quietly having your hands in their cage so they get super used to them and dont feel threatened. Once they arent afraid of your hands, it makes it much easier to get them to step up onto your fingers when they are out of the cage. Good luck! Persistence and Patience

I am also having A LOT of trouble getting my budgie to trust me. I try every day, I put my hand in the cage and slowly bring it up to him, but as soon as he sees it he flies as far away as possible. It's really frustrating and I don't know how to resolve it. Any suggestions?
