Posted October 23, 201014 yr Hi All. My son wants an all yellow (or white) Budgie for his Birthday. Hope this isn't the most ridiculous question, but..... I know the barring (spelling?) coming down close to the cere denotes a juvenile bird. What do you get on a single coloured bird? I just want to be ready when I'm trying to assess the age of a cage full of birds in the pet store. Any tips?
October 23, 201014 yr Hi. If the bird is a double factor spangle, a baby will have no visible iris ring (full black eyes). The other varieties like dark eye clear will be difficult to tell.
October 23, 201014 yr Hi. If the bird is a double factor spangle, a baby will have no visible iris ring (full black eyes) If its a baby none of the babies will have an iris ring Rachel. If theres an iris ring thats white it will be 10-12 months or older. If theres a pale brownish or pale greyish iris ring it will be around 5-7 months approx. Harder for the average person to tell the age of a white or yellow budgie. Baby male..............hot pink to purple cere Baby female ....whitish cere. FACT..................no petstore will tell you true facts about the budgie you buy. FACT .................a petstore employee will tell you either what you want to hear or they will make up a story about the bird if they dont know the answer. FACT.................. Petstore employees will guess at sexes of birds and get it wrong most of the time FACT.................. Petstores have been known to clip the wings of adult birds and sell them as HANDTAMED BABIES Please try and find a breeder to buy your baby from. They will know more and be able to tell you the family history and in most cases will do back up with phonecall info questions you have as a support system for you and your new bird

October 23, 201014 yr Author Thanks so much for sharing your wealth of knowledge. I've looked online and in the local newspaper/trading papers for breeders in Brisbane but I'm not having much luck at the moment. Maybe I'm not looking in the right places. For exactly all those Facts listed I was cautious about being sold a bird in a pet store by someone who knows even less than I do (which would be hard to find!) but is just telling me what I want to hear or making it up as they go along. I had a feeling I was going to struggle telling baby from adult myself!
