If you could just pick up and move house from city to country living, would you do it ?

 

We have the opportunity to move to a very special house in the country, about 2 and a half hours from where we live.

 

It would mean a quieter kind of life, and my husband could likely give up work.

 

I would have to rebuild aviaries etc on a smaller scale than I have now.

 

We wouldnt have more room on the block but we would have a bigger house with more character. 13 ft ceilings, ornate plaster work and cornices, polished floorboards, 7 bedrooms, three sitting rooms, old fireplaces in 5 rooms, newish upgraded kitchen, ex Franciscan friars residence, built in the 1920's. May be heritage listed in future.

 

 

I am so into this house.

Oh, go for it, Kaz! I would cover in all those verandahs and have inside/outside aviaries. You would probably have spare rooms so that you could have some indoor bird rooms, too.

I must sound like a philistine to do such things to a lovely home. lol The truth is, I look at all houses from the perspective of how I could make things better for my birds.

Catherine, I wouldnt be allowed. Heritage listed at some point in the future but currently being watched by heritage council as to so called "improvements"

 

 

PS as I am a leadlighter by trade I could restore the leadlights and add to them in a tasteful way

My whole family made the move 3 years ago went from Hastings And now live in practically the middle of nowhere and have 7 acres of land. We now have horses, Chickens and so many other animals (including budgies). We brought a really old house. And have never looked back. Also as a family we are so much happier.

I love the stain glass windows and the house looks like it has heaps of character. Even if it does get heritage listed, you could still use some of the bedrooms for breeding rooms. It's not like you'd have to renovate the rooms, just have free-standing cabinets. You could also have large cages on the verandah which wouldn't affect any structural aspects of the house.

 

If your hubby is ready to retire, then it looks like a good move. Just one thing to think about though is what facilities are close by (eg. medical, shops, petrol) and how long it'd take for an ambulance to get to your house. I know this might seem a bit doom and gloom, but it's something we had to seriously consider and decided still to move even though it can take up to 45mins for an ambulance to arrive (unofficially of course!).

I wouldnt use bedrooms for breeding rooms. I will work something out.

This house is a hundred or two hundred metres from the main street in town. Plenty of places within walking distance. Plenty of yard room for both a new double garage and aviaries too.

When can I move in? The house is beautiful Kaz, love the veranda, high ceilings, polished floors. And hubby can retire, that's awesome.

I would be checking, that you can have Birds & Avarys,it dos'nt look to have much

room out the back.May have to retier from they Bird game.

Its an hour and a bit from Mandurah mate.

Heritage listing does limit you some but you can also apply for grants to fix major stuff too. I have talked to them and we are all on the same page anyway. And listing it may not happen either and if it does its a fair way off in the future.

The church is diagonally across the opposite corner. Built by the same pastor who built the house but a couple of years after the house was built.

 

Across the road is a footy oval too (I Ken might enjoy that )

Kaz I would, i would go for the sea change(country change) The only thing that would put me off is rebuilding aviaries and birdroom. Only saying that is because Greg was looking at buying a house and land near Kyabram but rebuilding everything kinda changed his mind.

What about your leadlight business? Would there be enough work for you in that locale? Or would you be retiring as well? (Actually, I wouln't think of running a bed and breakfast as retiring, by any means! )

I can take that with me......there would be local work and nearby work and I could still work for my glaziers from there.......just further to collect work and deliver.

But semi retirement looks good too.

I may also find a builder and trade our skills and jobs.

It sounds like you have thought of every angle!

 

I don't like the house I live in, and if I had the chance to throw everything away and move to a house that really "grabbed" at me, I would do it! And you don't even have to "throw it all away"- it sounds like you could reasonably re-create all the things that are important to you.

For most of the time my children were growing up, my in-laws lived 2.5 hours away. But Dad was an over the road trucker, and that distance meant nothing to him. They would often call on a Saturday morning and ask if they could come out for the day. It was sad not to be able to just run out to visit them for shopping or dinner, but the distance was close enough that my children grew up with many memories of times with Grandma and Grandpa. Including birthdays and major holidays. It just depends on how much you are willing to make the drive.

If I do a weekly drive to collect or deliver leadlight work and tie it in with visit to the grandkids it will work out fine

You already know my thoughts on this. It's beautiful and I think you should go for it. In all honesty, what have you got to lose? Alot of your budgies, yes BUT You're going to have lovely fresh air, a beautifully old wonderful house, relaxation and RETIREMENT Plus you still get to have budgies.

Just don't do what my real dad did. He also had a driving job, going cross country, which always took him on the freeway past our town, but it was always "I came through at 5 am" or "It was a rush job and I didn't have time to stop". He stopped only twice in all the years.

 

But by the looks of that house, you would have an awesome "Grandma's House" for holidays and week long summer visits! And you would have room for the whole family at Christmas.
