My New Birdroom (start To Finish)

Featured Replies

  • Author

Today I bought half the wood to frame my shed (2 sides and one side of the roof) but found out I need that foil lining stuff first to go on the roof and the walls if I want. So I have came to a stand still again. Plus it is pouring rain and heavy big hail at the moment.

So next week I will buy that foil stuff for the roof and seems I have to buy 30mt roll i will do the walls too. Turning out to be expensive.

Found the perfect window today but they are brand new and really quite dear. 45cm x 45cm but I would want two. So thinking about it.

I also found the perfect little sink brand new $25.00. thinking about that too.

Picked up Clearwings mitre saw so that will help heaps.

Bad news my shed leaks really bad, inch of water everywhere, I think most of it is coming through the door because there is over a 1/4 inch gap on the sides of the door and a bit more on top and bottom of door. Some come down the whirly bird and believe it or not from the top of the roof in the middle and I didn't think that should happen, it's got me beat. BUT it's NOT GOOD ENOUGH, I am not very happy. Some come from under the shed where I siliconed so that surprised me, The rain and wind was strong, the rain was sideways. Unbelievable wind and rain plus hail.

After I did my birdroom slab and erected the birdroom on top............I was told I should have done it differently due to water getting in. The idea is to put a shed on a foundation and then add the internal floor so its a higher level than the shed footings. Water doesnt run uphill.

Thats exactly why when I did the new aviaries I had the exterior on footings and the floor at a higher level.

As far as the whirlbird goes, thats what I was getting at about being able to shut it down over winter.

Re my birdroom being on the same level as my slab............once I filled the undulations of the colourbond with cement, and tiled the birdroom there was no more leaks.

I didn't want to cement it in jsut incase Greg I breakup or he dies, I want to take it with me if need, but gee there is soooooo much silicone around it now it would be a **** job moving now anyway.

When it dries out I am going to silicone all the chanels inside the shed that might do the job. The water from the whirly is only a fine mist I think. But I can't understand why the roof is leaking.

The rooten door is my main problem, I asked Greg if he would help me take the door off and drop it closer to the bottom and then maybe I could screw another piece of square steel or something up above the door to stop the rain getting in and then that only leaves the sides.

Will take a photo tomorrow and show you the gaps in the door.

I think you will need a lot of silcone, because those types of sheds, the floor has to be higher.then the bottem of the shed walls.the rain will just run down the wall & on to the concrete,& into the shed. You may have build a strip of concrete right around the inside wall of the shed,to stop the water coming in.

Th strip of concrete is a very good idea and not one I had initially considered. There is a fair bit of merit in that. I will consider that greatly.

Thank you Macka.

I had to put a strip of concrete around the base of my birdroom shed because the slab was uneven and had big gaps. It doesn't look beautiful but it works and I haven't had any mice or leaks.

Splat, I'm glad you had all this rain to figure this out before you started lining with wood. You have saved the wood getting wet, or being in the way of your waterproofing work. Just think if you had gotten almost all the way finished, and THEN found out you had leaks! :D

Macka do you mean run down the outside of the shed to the bottom and and into the shed. I have silicone inside and out now so we will see. The door is my main problem because of the big gap around it ;)

Finnie all the wood was in the shed and it got drowned from the rain.

Today I made the frame work for the back part of the shed , very proud of myself, BUT i couldn't work out how to unlock the mitre saw so i had to go for drive about 20ks return to ask Ino how to do it.

Easy once I knew how, so I have cutting away :D Feeling very independant at the moment :)

Yes Splat. As Rachelm has done in the photo, make sure that it is high enough up that the water, will not come

in over the top of the concrete. If you are concerned, that the concrete, will stop you from removing the shed.

If you have to,put a strip of plastic or something,up against the wall & the concrete, but a hit with a hammer, would

break the concrete. You mentioned about lineing the inside of the shed,I would do the concrete first & then test it,

by spraying water on the out side wall to make sure the is not coming in,then put up the inside lineing. In the case of the door,if it opens out, change it to open in.Then you can fix some strips of metal,or simlar around the door,so the

rain,can't beat in..Because Budgie & water don't mix,

Today Clearwing (Geoff) came and helped me put my window in the birdroom. Well actually he did most of it. It was really hard took ages but it looks great, Thanks Geoff.

Before the insertion of window

and after

shed064.jpg

shed065.jpg

shed063.jpg

and after Geoff left I started doing the front wall framing

but I had to stop because I was scaring Gregs young pigeons that he had let out for the first time

so I had to put all the wood and tools etc back in the shed until tomorrow.I was chucking it on the floor with a bit of a bang and Greg asked me to be a bit quieter so I carefully went to put a pile on the floor and stupid me left my finger there well ouch!! boy did that hurt, I have a black finger nail and my whole finger is purple all the way around. Dumb pigeons

Tomorrow sore finger or not I am going to finish all the framing :)

I have another window lined up Gb to go in the back or side at the back but Geoff reckons more windows more heat so I have decided not to but I have the whirly to suck out heat also. Plus anymore windows take up valuable space. If I have to I will put another whirly on the roof.

It was not easy putting the window in.

hang in there splat, just think when your done and pumping out new babies by the minute youll know that it was worth it.

Working on framing the ceiling yesterday and today, Boy was that hard drilling through that steel but hey I got there.

So far I have done every little bit by myself except for the window. I know I will need help when it comes to the panels to fram the walls because it is heavy and I am little but I am very proud of myself so far.

Tomorrow I have to by more wood for wall and heaps for ceiling.

THEN I will be up to the insulation bats :P

But they will probably have to wait until after the end of November because I have to pay my rego between now and then and still paying the rotten car repair bill off.

BUT I might be able to afford to get one bag to get it started, we will see.

Clearwing goes away again soon and I look after his birds because I am his aviary assistant :D so that is more money in my pocket :P:D That might pay for my bats :D .

I have till next March to get it done but i am eager :D

Looking great splat!!

I wonder if there is a market for insulated sheds for bird breeders? It seems that to get the right environment, breeders have to go to a lot of work to get it right. I know it gives people a sense of satisfaction in creating their dream birdroom, but what about those who can't phyiscally do it and don't have anyone to help? Buying a ready made shed for breeding would certainly help some people I'm sure.

I went to Bunnings today to buy some more non structual pine, I have been paying $1.33mt and it has been really crappy stuff. Well today they are trying to get rid of it so it was going out for a $1. a piece (3 mt Lengths), I only wanted one but piece but I got 4, Greg told me to go back tomorrow and get extra if there is any left so i can frame it better for the bats.

It was good I only spent $4.00. But I want 4 more pieces so another $4.00 but I am happy with that. Have heaps of bills to pay this week. :(

Had to go back to the denist because I am still in pain so that was more money but they didn't do anything they said to wait another week and then they will do a root canal on my other tooth :(:( more money  I am so sick of the pain, it's driving me nuts.

UPDATE!!!!

All walls completed and half the roof framing is up, so now after I finish the ceiling framing I need insul bats for roof and walls and wood for the ceiling. AND then wood for the walls. BUT I am doing the ceiling first.

Raining today and I have a leak under the window so I have to work out where it is coming from. :D
