Introducing Myself...and Percy

Hi all! My names Mel and I've recently (today) become a first time bird owner. I've been on the lookout for just the right bird for a wee while now and had collected our cage and toys quite a while back. We had budgies when I was a child growing up and I loved them, so today we collected a gorgy purple budgie from one of the many breeders of the budgerigar breeders club of australia who was selling at our local markets in Toowoomba. We've named our new pet Percival (Percy for short) and he's currently sitting opposite me in his cage looking very inquisitive. I'm gagging for him/her to get used to his/her enviroment so we can get into the swing of things and let the little dude out of the cage to hang out with us...we're all very smitten.

I'll see you all around the forums as I glean as much info as I can to ensure an awesome life for our feathered friend. :)

Hi! Have a look around, it is a great forum! Your budgie is violet by the sound of it. We would be able to tell you the gender if you posted a picture.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome...I think someone neglected to tell me what time wasters these birds are, my husband, myself and our two children have spent half the evening sitting here watching the bird blink. hahahahaha

My poor dogs are a little bewildered, at this stage I'm keeping them well away from the cage, they did have a quick sniff around when they first came inside earlier this evening and they pretty much ignored it until Percy started moving around. Thankfully I have enough doors around here to keep them well separated and can heavily monitor them getting used to the cage over the next few weeks. I'm hoping that given time they'll get used to the cage and will go back to ignoring the cage AND the bird. Luckily they're only inside overnight so it shouldn't be too much of a hardship.

Ratzy, I'll get some pics over the next couple of days. I haven't done so yet as I wanted to allow Percy to settle on into his/her new environment before I started in on the paparazzi act. :) I'd love to know it's gender, I was told by the breeder today that it's DOB was 09/06/10 so I'm not sure if it's too early to tell or not?

Not too early to tell for most of us on here. We will tell you straight away once we see a picture. Take it with natural light conditions and no flash on the camera. Clear cere shot ( cere = nostrils ) :)
