Posted June 13, 201015 yr I just got Cloud about a month ago, and after the first two days I noticed his cere started to flake or peel. I don't think it's mites but then again I'm not the bird expert. Is the dirtied feathers above the cere some sort of symptom of a respiratory infection? His beak looks fine. He's on an all seed diet, I've tried to put fruits in but he shows no interest. Is it possible that he has a vitamin a deficieny which led to a respiratory infection? His behavior seems normal. Always chirping contently and flying around. He's taken a fancy to a corner where the window is open, I'm not sure if the draft is what made him sick to begin with though. Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you!
June 13, 201015 yr He looks like he is starting to moult, so the feathers won't look smooth on him for a while. In regards to the beak, whilst this can be normal, beaks require calcium to be at their best. Get him a calcium bell so he can chew at it and ingest some calcium. This should help. Staining above the beak indicates a slight respiratory infection. It occurs, like us having a slightly runny nose I suppose. Make sure that he is in an environment that is draught free. If he has got a little sick once, then it could happen again.

He nibbles on it very rarely and doesn't really take a liking to his toys but he does seem active. Should I buy the bell anyway? As for the respiratory infection is it something I should be worried about? I know that it can become very serious, Would a vet be necessary? or are there home remedies? Thank you so much for the help.
June 13, 201015 yr I agree... I was confused when I saw my budgies starting to moult lol. Now one is breaking her cap I think. For adding calcium to his diet, try powdered cuttle fish bone. What does he eat?
June 13, 201015 yr the cuttle bone is useless. they will destroy it but get little goodness out of it. Get the calcium bell - it is much better
June 13, 201015 yr For extra calcium my vet suggested using egg shells. Just wash them, put them in the microwave for about 30 sec to kill any bugs and then smash them up into small pieces. I mixed the pieces in with some grit and they've readily eaten it. I've also got a calcuim perch which they also chew on. Mine don't really use the cuttlebone in their cage, but the perch and egg shells are well used.
June 13, 201015 yr Author Thank you for all the advice. I was quite worried for awhile. I feel so much better! I'll try the egg shells and cuttle bone method for now. Ratzy: He eats a seed diet. I've tried to give him fresh fruits and vegetables but he won't have at them. Edited June 13, 201015 yr by ashley
June 13, 201015 yr I've tried to give him fresh fruits and vegetables but he won't have at them. Alot of birds at first do not eat the veggies or fruit you offer them. Have you tried chopping the veggies or fruit into tiny pieces or grating the carrots? Have you tried sprinkling some millet seeds on the veggies? I know it seems like a waste when they do not eat what you offer to them. Try to continue to offer them to your budgies diet daily. It might take a while for your budgie to accept the veggies. Have you tried offering your budgie some lentils and grain like brown rice, couscous, split peas?

I haven't tried the rice or peas, and neither the millet. I got some today so I'll keep that in mind. thanks!
