Posted June 12, 201014 yr well i brought a nice opaline light green hen to breed to my opaline light green /lacewing cock bird she has some nice breeding about her and he is breed by our own nubbly 5 pics of pair she didnt want to co-op but here they are dad looks bit crappy but thats as hes looking after these .... hes normally very nice with out dropped wings or tail oh and i decided not to breed lacewings but going by this clutch i have no say first three chicks ,,....are lacewing hens these are also their chicks but are being raised by a foster to lighten the load the foster pair had infertile eggs due same time so as soon as first chick hatched i moved three infertile up into light green nest and three fertile down to the foster nest the youngest chick was born on the 12 june (today ) two the eldest are rung already one on the 10th and second chick rung today first chick was hatched 2nd june second 4th june third the 7th june fourth 9th june fifth chick 10th june all doing great
June 12, 201014 yr first three chicks ,,....are lacewing hens Parents are gorgeous :hap: I love the light green opalines. Will all the babies be light green opalines? If they are lacewings what colour will they be? (sorry for asking dumb questions )
June 12, 201014 yr They will be of base yellow I think. How did you get lacewings, GB? Is the hen split?
June 12, 201014 yr Author They will be of base yellow I think. How did you get lacewings, GB? Is the hen split? two answer you both ... all chicks will be light green as their is no dark factor all chicks should be yellow as dad is not split to blue (however mum may be ) but you need both birds to carry the blue genetic to produce blues chicks so all chicks will be green im not sure but i think mum can pass the blue gene on to a percentage of the chicks giving them a chance to be split blue but im not sure its some thing ive wanted to as myself so if anyone can awnser that that would be great lacewing is a sex linked genetic their for only cocks can be split for the lacewing genetic all hens have to be visually lacewing to be called a lacewing never buy a hen split to the following albino lacewing opaline cinnamon clearbody slate im sure theirs others but i cant think of them right now as all the variety mentioned above are sex linked birds and the hen must be visually that variety a hen can not be split to a sex linked gene these chicks will also all be no dark factor birds the three in first nest are all lacewings (their for all hens as the mother is not a lacewing so any lacewing chicks must be female ) the three in the second nest are all dark eyed theirs no cinnamon chicks the three in the second nest could be hens or cocks i will have to wait and see as cause dads only split lacewing and mums normal i can get normal hens and normal cocks all Opaline light green of course if i wanted to get lacewing cocks id have to of paired up my lacewing with a lacewing hen to get lacewing cocks lacewing hens normal hens and normal /lacewing cocks i didnt want lacewings and was counting on the fact that mabe one chick would be lacewing with my pairing but Murphys law i got three Edited June 12, 201014 yr by GenericBlue
June 13, 201014 yr If mum is split blue, she has a 50% chance of passing it on to each chick but its impossible to tell who got it without test breeding.
June 13, 201014 yr Author If mum is split blue, she has a 50% chance of passing it on to each chick but its impossible to tell who got it without test breeding. thank you mate i thought so but was not sure

June 13, 201014 yr Looking good GB. How are they coping with the cold? Mum would need to be siting on them 24/7 in this weather.
June 13, 201014 yr Author Looking good GB.How are they coping with the cold? Mum would need to be siting on them 24/7 in this weather. my birds are at fifteen degree so the temp gadget tells me when ever i go out their as for cold i want them use-to cold why i breed them to hatch now by time their feathering will be worst weather but they are not outside so no damp no draft cold will only do them good make them stronger and use to environment they going to need to endure when older mum sitting constantly though so and boxes are quiet warm thanks jetrick57 im not that exited as i know they will all be light green and yellow lacewings knowing the backgrounds sort of takes fun out but im hoping for a few good hens knowing my luck the three lacewings will be the only hens i get
June 14, 201014 yr Author Lady luck smiled on you GB. Three Lacewings first up. i know i would have been over the moon 6 months ago but right now last thing i wanted was lacewing hens i just got ride of all my own and culled my lacewing chicks from last clutch seems someone wants me breeding them like it or not if these hens are any good i will go ahead with breeding them as a variety if not well ill cull them and then just use my split cocks as normals culling any lacewings i get
June 15, 201014 yr Author an update on chicks first three have all been rung chicks no order the oldest of other dark eyed three
June 16, 201014 yr Author look's good so far yes very mild down plucking but apart from that great not happy that their all going to be yellow with no dark factor but a good light greens always handy so if not very good lacewing hens i could use them as normals mabe one day i will get a few good split lacewing cocks that way as well as some nice looking hens the fact is lacewings are no longer a lesser variety with some very large solid birds being benched so if i was to stick to them as a variety id need to have some good solid hens to do this not an easy task with the reasonably good stock but nothing supper stock i have :grouphug: but persistence and hard culling i believe will be the key
June 16, 201014 yr Congrats On Your Chicks! :grouphug: Can't wait to see pictures of them when they have lots of feathers. Bet they will be cute.
June 17, 201014 yr Author cheers holden012 i love the feathering stage myself well more pics today i didn't take out as chicks are snuggled as you can see and its freezing here im yet to add anything to the nests incase your thinking why is their nothing in their i will be doing this in few days i dont like to do this till i need to clean box for first time will be just putting pine shavings in their then after all chicks are two weeks they will get Otes and weetbix with hulled Otes and seed in box to encourage eating and scrounging all snuggled up the other three getting more feathers starting to see the deep cinnamon quills on the wings im hopeing thats a good sighn of nice lacewings but wouldn't know my other lacewing chicks were not very good quality and i dont remember them having deep quills so fingers crossed

June 18, 201014 yr Author okay so today im not happy with the younger of the three chicks their seems to be something up for 8 days i think the oldest chick should look bigger maybe its just me as their in different nests its hard to compare but i dont want to put chicks near each other in case something is wrong with the last three today the oldest of the three was acting very odd it was shaking and sounded like it was in pain so i grabbed him out to see that he had only air in his crop no food i squeezed air out of crop and then checked his eyes to see they are not healthy looking to me i looked over other chicks and seems they are all turning red i dont think this is a good sign and so i rang a club member for advice he said to give extra food sourse like as in carrots and veg you know soft food to help mum have something to stimulate feeding he seems to think to try this before i decide something may be wrong with either of the feeders so i did this i will check them later tonight and also put some broline in the chicks eye see if this clears it up other wize if tomorrow chicks still getting air and looking sick i may put tripple c in water as it wont hurt if nothings wrong but may help if something wrong oh mabe i wont as im having trouble with the idea that i may get chicks that although come out fine may actually harbour something contained by the medication im thinking if they live the live if not it was for best of my flock i dont know both feeders look fine healthy but i know this doesn't mean anything if a desize is harbored will cheak them tomorrow better see what i think then could be nothing could of just been air in crop nothing more chick was very red though as others starting to look here is some pics them oldest chick all together can you see how red littles one is he should be at ringing stage but not i think their bit behind ???? anyone agree or is it in my head also the first three in order from oldest to youngest this time you can see mum stopped plucking at down thank goodness next hope she stops with this one also next also plucked around same area hope it stops , should can use my spray if need be so these three doing fine and very healthy also i took pics of mum and dad today dad looks better then first picture which is good sign their copping fine mum dad Edited June 18, 201014 yr by GenericBlue
June 19, 201014 yr Author update well today chick looks bit better the eye ointments working however i have misplaced the tube grrrrr the chicks seem feed better im wondering if maybe they were dehydrated a bit is that possible ??? the middle chick seems to be feed most and last chick seems to be fed but not very well like first chick with eyes shut tight but then its only 7 days old so maybe eyes are still closed from being little i think im freaking out a bit as the top ones are doing so good their alive and they are growing so guess im just use to them all thriving will get pics maybe tomorrow

Cheers Patrick thank you i wasnt going to breed for lacewings anymore but their as been to many things pushing me back in this direction so might just have to keep them regardless on looks as their lines are useful and will do me good in near future well i couldnt find my post about my aviry so i thought id just post pics here rather than do another topic in fact i think shannon has the idea and may just do one big ME thread with all my questions and problems and breeding rezults aviry the lot but for now i will just post my aviry reno on here so i have been linning it to stop condensation and i have altered it also to prevent draft yet keep air flow take look how its going i covered half the frount still keeping sides open but with doors walls are getting fully lined with untreated pine and have instilation under them back wall still getting done roof still to be done but getting their v e r y s l o w l y
