May 30, 201015 yr Can anyone tell me why the Henry George and Campbell birds from SE Queensland were disqualified? :fingerscrossed: Extensive Judges comments now displayed on a class by class basis on the Live Feed site. The DQ birds had 3 toes forward on a permanent basis. That is when the bird is given the opportunity to move from perch to perch they still display this feature. The photo of the winning grey alos shows this. I guess it wasnt a permanent feature. This tends to affect the larger birds. The new larger perches should fix this issue. We really dont want to be disaulifying birds. I will state my vested interest. We were 2nd in the Greys and had a Pied DQ last year. However, hopefully the issue will sort itself out. I would have liked to have been a fly on the wall at the National Judges meeting today as the brds DQ belonged to National judges.
May 30, 201015 yr Jeff...........your grey was exceptional .....very very nice  Thanks Kaz. We held off breeding from him as we wanted him primed for the Nationals. He had a yellow face brother in the team that wasnt benched. He also has another yellow face brother and a nice Yellow Face sister as well. As he was bred from two yellow faces we hope he is a double factor and can breed some yellow faces for my my oldest son. :fingerscrossed:
May 30, 201015 yr very commendable was the judges comments at the bottom of each class results...very good reading :fingerscrossed:

May 30, 201015 yr Can anyone tell me why the Henry George and Campbell birds from SE Queensland were disqualified? In the case of the Henry George bird, its 3 toes, were to the front of the perch. I did't notice the Campbell Birds.
May 30, 201015 yr Well done Victoria........ Henry George represented South Queensland well again with some very nice bird's, he's a Champion! If only I could afford one of his birds lol. Congrats to all the teams

Welcome to the Forum Jeff, I look forward to your contribution and Congratulations on your success at the Nationals, the Grey cock looks to be a lovely bird. The 3 toes forward is an issue for Judges, i would be extremely reluctant to DQ a bird for this when I'm Judging. I'm not 100% certain the changing of perch sizes will make a difference, but time will tell.
May 31, 201015 yr Congratulations to all who placed at this years nationals and well done to Victoria. Hopefully we (NSW) can take out 1st place next year.

May 31, 201015 yr I'm not 100% certain the changing of perch sizes will make a difference, but time will tell. Hi Heathrow, I find your comment interesting as I too dont believe that increasing the perch size will make the birds grip better. Personally I think a smaller perch would make them grip better, If you put a tree branch in your aviary the birds will all want to be on the end where the branch is at its smallest. As you say time will tell . Maybe hang onto the old perches just in case we revert back.

Smaller perch sizes seem to make the birds more alert on the perch, larger perch make for lazy birds that sit across the perch. GB - The reason the 3 toes forward is an issue is for Judging is - to DQ a bird you need to be certain that it is a permanent condition. What makes it more contentious for a bird to be DQ at the Nationals is the number of preselction stages a bird has to go through. ie club selection, state selection & national preparation. I think if Henry George was certain his bird had 3 toes forward on a permanent basis he wouldnt not have benched it.
May 31, 201015 yr I think you will find, that it was the case, last year. The bird belonged to a National judge, as well.

May 31, 201015 yr Hi All, Here is my National rant for what it's worth. I hope it doesn't sound like I have tourettes syndrome, so here goes... Best bird - Jimmy Fletcher's Light Green cock - better than Bob Smith's Blue from QLD and Hanno's Cinnamon from Tassy. It is an outstanding bird - the best I have seen!!! Others - Hunter's Cinnamon, 4th place Dom Pied (and the 2nd and 3rd birds as well), Bob Smith's Grey Green, S & F Blackeye (the best I have seen), 2nd place Albino (hen), 1st 4 Lutes, Kakoschke's clearwing (nearly touched the roof of the cage and had a clear wing), Jean Horrobin's Opaline hen - the steadiest showbird I have seen for a long time, 1st 3 spangles. There were plenty of others that I would love in my breeding room. I had 3 in the team - a grey green and a green that just went for the ride (the sooner we get three birds on the bench - the better). My fallow run fourth and come up against some strong birds. The first 4 in the class were real quality. The two Vic birds did not behave well and it cost them as they looked a whole lot better after the event. Eva DeRango's bird looked fantastic - a whole lot better than the week before and was very unlucky. In saying that - Hanno's bird did everything right and deserved to win. The two disqualified birds - as a judge myself, I will be careful what I say, but - there were 4 judges on the stage and they took a lot of time when making both decisions. I have no doubt that both birds have problems - one of them (I am lead to believe had a severe problem). At the end of the day, the four men with judges sticks in their hands were given the job of making a decision and they made it. Big perches would not have made a difference - three toes forard is a deformity and is penalised correctly in the standard. We should not be making perches in showcages bigger so birds with deformities can be exhibited. All in all - a super weekend! I here there is a semi on the way to restock Rocky with Red Wine! I am knackered because of lack of sleep and can't wait to pair a few up on the weekend. Congrats to Mark, Liv, Jeff (good grey!) and Karen on having birds that were benched and performed well (I hope I haven't missed anybody?). Mark was stiff as Ian Hunter's bird is a pearler! Bring on Canberra (watch out for my grey - if he grows a tail!). Cheers PT Edited May 31, 201015 yr by KAZ

What I have found with the larger perches is that the larger birds are not teetering on the perch as their toes wrap around the perches. Smaller and larger birds alike tend to stand at a better angle because of the larger perches. I think you will find, that it was the case, last year. The bird belonged to a National judge,as well.Wasn't it your gorgeous Dommie Pied, Jeff?Funny that the 3 birds DQ for 3 toes forward are all National Judges! :hap: I know my bird does it when he has a Judges head or photographer at the end of his beak. I suppose he was just not meant for the big stage.

LOL But still on the same subject, I'd like to know what causes the 3 toes forward. Is it something that happens in the nest, or when ringing ... ? :hap: I personally haven't had one myself yet. I'm wondering whether it is a deformity caused by an accident or an indication that the bird is unsteady on the perch ... ?

There must have been some super Pieds in the class. The judges comments were that there were too manu feathers missing. Did you notice anything? I have no problem with the judges choices its just that it was a very good Pied. Some birds have big feet and some dont.Kaz did you get a picture of John Kobilanski's Pied that finsihed 4th? Can you either post it or email it too me. I would like another look.
