Housing Hens & Cocks Together

Featured Replies

Posted

We’ve been bitten by the budgie bug and will be expanding our flock from 2 to 4 (for now!). They will be all cocks, so there will be no problems in housing them all together in one large cage.

However I was thinking that if further down the track we decide to expand the flock even further, would there be any problems in housing hens and cocks together in a cage? There wouldn’t be any nesting boxes or nice hidey holes for them to get broody, as I’m not looking at breeding (not unless I get bitten by the breeding bug!). Or would it be better to house them in separate cages and allow them to mingle when they out of the cage for ‘playtime’.

Any advice and/or people’s experiences in housing hens and cocks together would be greatly appreciated.

No problem mixing the sexes if there are no nest boxes. Good luck Clearwing

Thanks KAZ and Clearwing!!

Hmmm, this means that I could always get some baby hens later on and then decide in a year or two if I want to get into breeding - that would give me plenty of time to research/prepare....oh and convince hubby of course!!! :(

Remember quarantine for the new ones.

Absolutely! I've already got a cage set up in a separate part of the house which is well away from the others.

okay, I was just checking.

No worries, it's always good to remind people because they might not know or think that if the birds all look healthy, there is no need to quarantine. By reading from peoples experiences on this forum - ignoring this or not knowing can lead to problems.

Some people might be reluctant to pay for another cage and accessories when it'll only be used temporarily, but the costs are well worth it compared to the emotional distress and vet bills that might occur otherwise.
