Posted May 1, 201015 yr Hi all Im new to the forum and pretty new to budgies. I have kept pet budgies in the past but have only just started getting into the english budgies. I bought some pairs yesterday and discovered that one of my hens has a swollen leg from the leg ring. Its very swollen below the ring but also a bit above. I want to remove the leg ring as it is obviously too tight for her now. I know that she should be taken to a Avian vet but I live in a small town and just the standard vets shut at 11am on a Saturday and wont be open again until Tuesday (public holiday on Monday). Can someone please help by telling me the best way to get the leg ring off?? My other birds (vars type of parrots) all have split rings so its easy to take them off... this looks to be a solid ring. Thanks in advance! Cheers Amy
May 1, 201015 yr I had exactly the same problem. Take her to the vet, prefferrably an avian vet. Mine was taken to a normal vet and she got cut by the scissors they used. It cost me $70.
May 2, 201015 yr You need ring cutters. I have had it happen in the past and I took a bird to the vet. I bought ring cutters that cost me about $15 and I had it happen again, and I cut the ring off myself. Give the bird a drop of ivermectin on the back of the head. The ivermectin will help kill any mites that may have caused this. This occurs as a bit of dirt gets in under the ring, rubs, and infection is the result. You need to get to an avian vet or a breeder who has ring cutters. Perhaps there is a budgie breeder near you.
May 2, 201015 yr It is swollen up as an infection is setting in. You need to cut the ring off. After that, bathe it in a clean solution of warm water and betadine. Getting the ring off is the priority.
May 2, 201015 yr if you brought her from a breeder i would take back for their asistance if from pet shop id go to vet as you could damage her more yourself not being experianced at removing a ring with out swelling is hard enough with i wouldn't want to try it dave had good sugestion with the ivomectiom as could be mite as he said caused it looks like vet job or as i said if from a breeder go strat back for their help
May 2, 201015 yr Author Thanks for your replys. I did get her from a breeder but there is no way I am heading back there.... its 3 hours away. I live in rural queensland (Kingaroy) and there are no english budgies around here that I know of. We dont even have any bird clubs and I dont know any other breeders around here. The only options I have at the moment is to either wait until the vets open tomorrow and hope that work will let me take some time off or talk to a parrot breeder thats 30 mins away who doesnt have anything to do with budgies and only ever uses split rings for her parrots. I dont even know if the vets around here deal with birds. They are all the bigger farm animal vets. Hopefully i can eventually find some breeders a little closer to kingaroy in the future... I like the english budgies and would love to start getting more into the genetics side of things.
May 3, 201015 yr Author Just an update. I ended up taking the hen to my parrot breeder friend who luckly had everything needed. After a few snips either side of the ring, her leg was free... a little banged up from the ring but nothing to bad. She didnt bleed much at all and it was instantly bathed in some light antiseptic she had for her birds. From the looks of it, the breeder I got her from had put a finch size ring on her leg (we compaired it to other budgie rings she had on hand) so no wonder the leg swelled! She is being kept away from other birds in a clean environment and getting her leg bathed 3 times a day until she heals. Thanks again Amy
May 3, 201015 yr hi i have the same problem when can i buy the stuff to cut of the ring and the stuff to treat the birds for mites i live in penrith in west sydney.
May 3, 201015 yr hi i have the same problem when can i buy the stuff to cut of the ring and the stuff to treat the birds for mites i live in penrith in west sydney. Ring cutters are available from any good bird supply store ( cut twice once on each side of the ring so it falls away ) .........................ivermectin is mostly a vet suply thing in small amounts. Joining a budgie club gives you access to priducts like this. The need to remove the ring when the leg swells is URGENT .......dont waste time or the hen can lose her leg once the blood supply is cut off.

May 3, 201015 yr yeah i have met them at a recent club meeting if i take the bird they can help me cut it off and with treatment right That would be their choice to make....noone can say what someone else would do. They arent vets. A lot of budgie members help each other out though...you just have to ask.
