Psycho Budgie Help

i have a budgie that i got from my grandparent when they gave me there aviry a few years ago and they dont know how old she is. one time i placed breeding boxes in the aviry and she started laying eggs immediately but she was to busy making sure that no other hens could take any of the other nest so all she would do is bite holes in the eggs a throw them out, so i did a test on if the hen will throw them out regardless of the number of nest boxes but still in the aviry and she did. i have never tried breed her separately with the concern that she mite go nut on the male.

Should i try to breed her?

You need to figure out how old she is..............since hens have more trouble with eggbinding and prolapse after the age of 4 years, your window of opportunity may be lost.

Going after other hens nests and eggs in a colony breeding situation is common behaviour for most hens.

is the behaviour of biting holes in eggs usally related to colony breeding?

Any invasion of another birds nest and damage to eggs or chicks is a common issue in colony breeding.

Colony breeding you should have at least 2-3 nesting boxes per hen and they should all be the same height in a aviary, so no hen has a higher spot than someone else as they will see it as more protected... Yes as Kaz had said this is very typical hen behavour in colony breeding and being the older and maybe oldest hen there she may she that she is the only one who can and should breed, could help example why she also attacks the others...

You did the right thing removing her and she should be breed else where but that wont stop others attacking each other when its time to breed so just becareful...

Its all very well to talk about breeding her elsewhere but her age has not yet been established

Too old. Dont allow her to breed Joel. Keep her away from anywhere that nestboxes are.

Boys in right condition

If the female cere is light to medium brown her cere will be right to carry her through the whole process. If its dark brown and flaky its gone past that point and at the stage where it will flake off and show the white blue thats underneath. White blue is not in breeding conditon. If you have timed it wrong and its dark and flaky, often the hen loses interest or condition at some point through the breeding process and you will have problems.

okay, and is there a certain time of the year that they come into condition or dose it have something to do with there health?

I think day light plays a part in that. In the wild they breed after the rain I think.
