really need some advice

fixed

I personally wouldn't use those kinds of cages for breeding.....but wait for the experts before you change things around.

NO..............cages far too small and in adequate for breeding. Cages too small even for normal housing of a pair of budgies.

Nestboxes inside the cage makes checking them near impossible as well and taking up even more space in an already too small cage. No room to fly across the cage in displays of mating behaviour. Inadequate perching. Some perches over food and water.

You need something more like this 46dab62f.jpg

Cage at least 2 feet wide ( 60cms) by a foot and a half deep ( 45cms ) and a foot and a half high ( 45cms )

okay thanks, i know that now but i have had no luck trying to find cages or boxes like that. should i make the breeding nests my self ?

Nestboxes can be found in any bird supply store or stockfeed places that has bird stuff. You have nestboxes already anyway.

Until you can get the right set up I suggest you remove the nestboxes from the cages and dont allow them to try and breed in those cages.

Cages of the type described are approx $40 to buy. You can see breeding cages on ebay all the time or buy from your local trading newspaper.

whats your opinion on this cage, it has been successful 2 times but then id switched to the other cages and had nothing

I don't think you'd be able to use that one for breeding either. You still need to attach the nestbox to the outside of the cage and I don't think the top is suitable.

a) It looks like the birds could get stuck between the wire

B) It is curved so the birds can't fly around the top properly.

And they don't have any shelter from the elements of the weather. But that's just my opinion, I don't know 100% if it is or isn't suitable, one of the others will be able to tell you :D

okay i need to do some upgrading around a bit

You could make the cages. We aren't trying to be mean just give advice.

to be honest I made 3 cabingets myself and I have no ability whatsoever when it comes to wood work. Sure they weren't perfect as the stuff Daz makes but they were similar in size and shape... the only difficulty I had was finding cage fronts. Next time I build them I think I'll find what cage fronts are the most easy to get and then make the dimensions suit the cage fronts.

Bunnings is my hero now! :D Give it a try and see how you go.

To be blunt... this cage is horrible and shouldn't house a single budgie, let alone a breeding pair. It's more of a canary cage. It allows no room for flying as budgies need to fly across a cage, not up and down. Check out this post: Cages wrong/right for some great general cage information.

yer, ill try that

Unfortunately.........budgie breeding is NOT something that can be done on a budget with odds and sods of cast off recycled substandard or too small cages. You WILL have to spend some money on them.

Happy healthy birds breed.

You have to get things right for the birds or you are destined for disaster.

which is why I myself haven't started and breeding pairs yet. I've waited until I have had money and then gone completely nuts at Bunnings and Salvage yards getting all perching/nestbox/breeding cabinet materials, and been buying aviaries when I've had the chance :D If I had of started my birds breeding now or in the past i think I would have had major heartache and given up.

mr hopeful, start off slow and work your way to your goal :D It does take time, effort and yes funds too, but the final achievement of happy breeding birds makes it all worthwhile B)

so is the cage the problem or is it the lack of space in the cage. if you have that cage can you just cut a hole and get an external nest?

That cage is bad a for a lot of reasons..........bad to keep the average budgie in due to extreme lack of space under normal conditions, so when breeding its makes it worse as there would then be two budgies in a cage too small and not right for budgies.

the bar spacing gets narrower as you get to the top of the cage.

oh no i ment the first cage

Joel, if you look 3 posts down from your own "Deb's" post, breeding set up, Go into her post and have a look at her cage picture. That is about what you should be aiming for. A picture paints a thousand word's they say. If you can manage somthing similar you should have no trouble producing happy little budgies. Good luck with it but be prepared first. :)
