March 20, 201015 yr yup! the blue cere means hes fully matured NO !! He is wearing a blue ring. These were issued September last year..........so he is anywhere between 6 months and under. COLOUR of cere only is no indicator of old enough to breed. Edited March 20, 201015 yr by KAZ
March 20, 201015 yr what date is on the ring he is wearing....cere colour does not mean he is over 12 months.... yup! the blue cere means hes fully matured NO !! He is wearing a blue ring. Oops....sorry Kaz....didn't see your post til after I posted mine ....Luvbir....as Kaz said.....
March 20, 201015 yr yup! the blue cere means hes fully matured Bad advice Jeddo. Think before you post.
March 20, 201015 yr Why do some breeders breed their hens under 12 months of age then? Everyone has their own system. There is no right or wrong. What is fact to one person may be fiction to another.

SOME not all. But here we are talking about a cock bird just through his first moult, first sign of colour on cere and most likely no older than 6 months. Its like asking a ten year old child to father and raise a family. Edited March 21, 201015 yr by KAZ
March 21, 201015 yr entirely agree with what kaz has said above, just because they can breed young doesnt mean they should.
March 21, 201015 yr I come to this forum for help and advice often, also to learn as much as I can about my birds, the way I do this is by reading other peoples experiences from thier posts and asking questions as silly as they might seem. The senior members share their knowledge every day, so if people put the questions out there they should expect a response, whether its what they want to hear or not.....I personally want to try and do the right thing by my birds and listen to the advice given to me... Before joining this site I bred young birds without knowing they were to young, I did it twice....I lost 1 hen from being egg bound, and I lost 4 chicks that the parents just lost interest.....yes this could have happened if they were older I guess, but now I am aware I would never risk it again....
March 21, 201015 yr It must be said, that when there is advice given, sometimes it pays to see the experience of the person giving the advice. Not everyone just because they answer a topic has the experience, knowledge to be advising someone in the right way. For instance Jeddo is 14 years old and has four pet type budgies and thinks a coloured cere is enough to go by for breeding age. A budgie can have a coloured cere at 4-5 months old. That doesn make the budgie old enough or finished growing enough to be a breeder themselves. Anytime you get advice on here you can click on the members name and see who they are and what they actually know by cruising their other posts/topics. A young male can fertilise an egg yes....but he likely wont be able to fully raise chicks or feed them well enough either. Some budgie males too young think the eggs are there to be eaten, some go into the nestboxes and fully soccer the eggs around like they are soccer balls. You cannot expect a male that young to be a dedicated partner or father in breeding. Give him time to grow. At a time where he still needs nutrients to grow himself, he would be trying to feed chicks. Not good , not good at all. **** Aditionally........there is a duty of care we, on a forum, have to bear in mind when offering advice, especially if it then makes a young member think they can go off and breed babies. March 22, 201015 yr Personally KAZ, I would never do it but there are experienced breeders out there that do it. I spoke to one who said he breeds his hens at 9 months but waits 2 years for his cocks to be ready. Go figure!

And just because some may do it, is no good reason for anyone to advocate is as a practice to employ. Taking notice of the little things as was done in this topic...................Jeddo said YES based on cere colour alone Bad advice. Sorry Jeddo....but it was bad advice. I saw the legring, not to mention the location of bar markings on the head and the lack of white iris rings. Blue metal legband issued here 1st September and most breeders didnt use the new rings until January anyway.......but it still makes the bird too young to do a good job as a father.

So true Kaz,there is a lot of post, posted on here by members, who have a bird in a cage or 6 or 8 in a avary & they make comment about, every question asked.Nine times out of Ten, all they are doing is confuseing the question, the person is asking.
