Hi all,

Very cold down here this morning, but the birds still need to be fed!

Public Holidays don't mean nothing to them.

I will start taking some pics again and get them on here asap.

Thanks for asking.

Managed to see Yusuf Islam aka (Cat Stevens) last night.

If you get the chance to see him you won't be dissapointed.

Have a good holiday!

Cheers

Hi all,As promised I took some pics this morning. This is a nest of 6, from a Blackeyed Yellow Cock x Dark Wing Hen of Ken Yorkes. If I am to believe the dealer the Cock bird is a KK bird.I am thinking about getting the ring no. checked out to prove if is so.He didn't do anything with a previous Hen (eggs were blank)But certainly did the business this time around.

CheersPatrick

P.S. I hope I have saved this right!

This Hen had 7 chicks last round, and a sensible 4 this time around.

Not forgetting Dad who is a Normal Grey Cock.

Maybe it is just me, but you have not indicated that either of the birds were spangles, and yet the wing marking on these birds look very much spangles to me. Am I mistaken here?

Hi Dave,

I have very much bred them as per instructions of Ken Yorke who supplied the Hen,who I will need to confirm what particular type of Dark Wing he classified her as.

As for the Cock,Ken had no Blackeyed Yellow Cocks available so I needed to acquire one locally.

I am certainly not a colour specialist, and accordingly rely on the advice of experts.

But I do take your point re the wing markings, and might forward the picture onto Ken for appraisal.Maybe it's the Cock, that was hiding something.

Cheers

Patrick

These 2 chicks are from a pairing of a Ken Yorke Dark Wing Cock and Hen,P1030325.jpg

This nest of 5 Chicks is from my 02 Spangle Cock.He was put with a young Albino Hen which is not a great pairing, but it was his last hurrah, and her first.

They had 6 good Spangles last round. He did nothing with previous Hens, so go figure!P1030314.jpg

This Chick is one of my favs from the first round!P1030338.jpg

Hi Patrick is the hen a lacewing?

Looks like you have a fantastic setup and all the chicks look great, really looking forward to when you have a cull.

Hi Libby

Thank you for the nice comments,

Are you looking to add to your flock?

My two Lacewing Hens are from Ian Marshall at NEBS.

I've had them for about a year.

Are you going to Saturdays Auction?

I shouldn't, but hard to stay away!

Cheers

Patrick

Hi Patrick,

I'm always looking to increase my flock  and am certainly planning on going on Saturday, but i think i'll be sitting on my hands this time. I'm even dragging my hubby along his time so he can see what i hope to achieve someday.

Hope to see you there

Libby.

Hi Libby,

That's great you might get him hooked!

I am interested in having a look as I have a few holes in my flock jig saw

that I woold like to fill, just dependant on quality and price.

Also you can't help but be cautious when birds are offered that possibly haven't worked for the breeder.

There's a degree of trust involved which I've seen abused.

Look forward to seeing you both on Saturday.

Hi all,

I paired my good Lutino Hen with a new TCB from the same stud on the 13/6 and they clicked instantly.

As it happens she laid an egg today which is an awfully quick turn around so I will be interested

to see if it's fertile.

The quality Dom Pied which I bought at Auction recently doesn't look like he was fertile this round, but it's early days.

There are now 55 chicks in the nest from the second round with eggs stilll to hatch.

It's turning into a full time job cleaning and feeding everybody!

Cheers

Hi GB,

Good to hear from you!

Truthfully it has turned into a lot of work but also very rewarding.

I started my first round in March with 20 pairs in all wire breeding cages.

Of those 15 pairs ultimately had young ones totalling 70 in all with one or two deaths,

leaving me 61 chicks now in weaning cages.

That was 70 chicks from 105 eggs being laid, which I am told was good.

In the second round there are 16 pairs with 14 now with chicks and the other 2 pairs with eggs to hatch.

As for the the quality I believe I have a long way to go, and possibly have 5-6 stand out youngsters.

I have a number of young ones that will be useful to me next year as they are split Lacewing and I would like to work with that variety. My Lutino chicks are looking good also.

I'm probably not the best judge and look forward to having someone skilled at culling go through my flock and telling me who to let go.

That will be hard to do as I like them all!

Cheers

Hi all,

Chick no. 57 of my second round hatched today.

There have been two nest of 7, two nest of 6, two of 5 and three of 4 so far this time around,

plus the balance of chicks in the other nest.

There's an auction in Adelaide today which all going well I will get to,

but I am reluctant to take on too many more outcrosses until I know what I have amongst

my youngsters and what I might need in the future.

That said you never know!

Cheers

be very careful its someone you trust

and never ever let the person culling take your culls to get rid of for you

keep them seperate and get rid of them yourself and dont tell them where

a bit of advice i was giving :D

sometimes people just are not what they seem no matter how much we want to believe they are

Wow... I know that people can be paranoid, but really, if itis someone you trust, then the other bits of advice are not needed.

I know there are bad people out there and I know that not everyone can be trusted, but if I did not trust someone, I would not let them help me with a cull at all.

im not paranoid dave im just going on some very solid evidence i have gathered over the time ive been in the bird game (seeing and hearing things i maybe shouldn't have here and their )

and some advice i was given by not one but at least 15 other bird breeders from all over vic :D

their are some people i trust myself that i know are not trusted when it comes to culling peoples birds

lets just say some people cant help themselves

others have other reasons to want to help you out and its not actually to help

sometimes they dont even help you to actually take your birds but to make sure you dont get as good as them

it is a very competitive hobby

so im finding out

to the point where i dont actually see how it can be that fun once past a certain level

I know the type of people you are talking about, and I have seen them far too often myself, but I pity the people that are like that.

I do not want to be a part of a scene with people like that, and I refuse to play those games.

I feel that if i start getting paranoid an acting as crazy as they do, then I have sunk to their level, and I deserve whatever happens to me.

Do not sink to their level. If someone wants to buy a bird of mine, good on them. if they hunt around lookign for my culls, good on them. I shoudl eb flattered.

If they take one of my birds and improve on it, good on them.

Ultimaely, if I become like them, then shame on me.

be very careful its someone you trust

and never ever let the person culling take your culls to get rid of for you

keep them seperate and get rid of them yourself and dont tell them where

This is good advice. There are rogues out there and others will take advantage of someone lower down the ladder than themselves if they think they can get an advantage over you. Seriously...good advice :D

Hi all,

Thank you GB,Dave and Kaz for your great comments, I learnt so much from the above post.

I have just returned from the auction in Adelaide with 8 new birds, I couldn't resist.

Three are from studs you guys might know, R&A Smith,T&S Appleton and the Charlesworth Family.

The others were from good studs here in Adelaide, including four from a stud I already have good birds from.

I will try and post pics once I settle them in.

Thanks again for the great advice!

Cheers
