June 1, 201014 yr Author Hi all, Two more chicks tonight, so it's been a good day. That's 25 this round. I hope to get chicks from my best pair, which should be any day now! Cheers Patrick
June 4, 201014 yr Author Hi all, Up to 28 chicks in the second round and my first chick from my best pair this round which is great. We had our coldest morning this year in S.A. with temps under 5 degrees, which makes that early morning visit to the birdroom a bit chilly, to say the least. Don't think the birds are that impressed either! Cheers Patrick Edited June 4, 201014 yr by jetrick57
June 5, 201014 yr Author Hi all, 30 chicks as of this morning in this my second round of this season. There are still quite a few eggs to hatch, but I don't expect the numbers of the first round. Getting closer to a 100 chicks for the season which would be a first for me. I have really enjoyed the experience the quantity has given me, and look forward to bring the quality up in the future. Cheers Patrick

Cheers Patrick  Wow! That's amazing from my 'little flock' perspective. I added spinach and broccoli (organic of course) to my poor flock's diet and they are munching away very happily. It's nice change from callistamon and kykuyu grasses. They are loving it! They also look so content with face full of soaked seed - especially when it sticks to their beaks! Cute! Cheers, JO
June 5, 201014 yr Author Hi Jo, That's great, they'll be hooked now! It's funny when you bring in new birds and they begin to get use to a new home and new food. Initially some act a little disinterested in greens etc until they get the drill and dig in like everybody else. When in Rome,I guess. Cheers Patrick

June 5, 201014 yr Author Thanks Taboo, Yes it's something of a maternity ward in the Birdroom at the moment, with 32 chicks in the nest and 63 in weaning cages. I didn't know what to expect when I started the first round back in March, but they have exceded my best expectations. Â And yes the work load has grown with every chick so I am looking forward to them taking a break! Â I am really thankful things have gone so well as it doesn't always go to plan. Â Cheers Patrick
June 5, 201014 yr Well done Patrick on a successful breeding season looking forward to more photo's of the babies in the weaning cages, when you have some free time

June 6, 201014 yr Author Well done Patrick on a successful breeding season looking forward to more photo's of the babies in the weaning cages, when you have some free time   Â Thanks guys for the kind words, I only hope they breed this well as the quality improves. 34 chicks as of this morning with my best pairs so far with two and the other with 3 chicks. The later had 7 last round so I would be happy with this result. Tried getting some pics as they were feeding and will load the better ones later. The youngsters like children don't sit still. Cheers Patrick

June 7, 201014 yr Author Hi all, The 36th chick of my second round hatched today, taking my season total this far to 99 chicks not including the odd unfortunate death. Â As my first round youngsters head towards twelve weeks I am looking forward to getting them into their flight. Â Cheers Patrick
June 7, 201014 yr Author Hi Taboo, Yes there's something special about Luts isn't there! These two come from a pair that has good bloodlines and are hopefully the first of many more. Four of their siblings died in the first days of life so there could have been six. But I am certainly happy with these two! Cheers Patrick
June 8, 201014 yr Author Hi all, Cracked the 100 mark for the season last night with the hatching of chick 101! By the time many of these second round chicks are ready to be weaned the Aug/Sept season will almost be here. Can't believe half the year has gone already! Cheers Patrick
June 9, 201014 yr Author Hi all, My flock should hit the 200 mark today or tomorrow and with the increased population, boy! how the seed intake has risen. Some serious culling will no doubt be required. We have an Auction coming up in Adelaide next week and I am almost reluctant to go for fear of seeing some great birds. That said I have a few holes in the breeding team I would like to fill for the Spring. Any excuse will do! Cheers Patrick ps Chick 41 of my second round arrived today. Had 65 first round, but that's a long way off at this stage unless all the eggs are goodins'
June 11, 201014 yr Author Hi all, Chick no. 45, of the second round hatched out today bringing the flock total to 202. As my first round youngsters mature the noise level is certainly growing too! Cheers Patrick
June 11, 201014 yr Author Hi Patrick, I'm enjoying reading your breeding journal and loving the photos to. Â Hi Rachel, Thank you for reading my journal, though there's not that much happening, besides feeding and cleaning on my part. Â Though I should be happy they have bred so well. I'm hoping it can continue as the quality of the birds gets better. Â I will try and get some more pics up, though the photos of pinkies in the nest look a bit like baby photos after while. Â Have a good weekend! Cheers Patrick
June 13, 201014 yr Author Hello all, Just finished my big Sunday clean up in the Birdroom and managed to do those things that don't get done when your rushing off to work. I split one pair who have finally convinced me a good quality Grey normal I have is infertile. I'll rest him for now and try again later in the year. Never say never! On the other hand I decided to pair up my good quality Lutino hen with my new TCB. She had no partner for a second round and still appeared eager, and fortunately they appear to click. While I acquired them at different times they are from the same reputable stud down here. So fingers crossed. Also chick no. 50 of my second round hatched out this morning. Hopefully amongst my 100+ chicks there are one or two with potential. Cheers Patrick
