that is the biggest list of quotes ive seen lol

Good stuff indeed!

Thanks Patrick,

I will 'grill' Kaz for details of those boxes. Your set up looks so easy to use!

Sorry about the lost hen, but at least you got some progeny from her...

Still no eggs in my nests...waiting, waiting...

I have put a spare cock bird in a cage in the nesting shed - and he sure is stirring up the other boys. Maybe it will help.

Cheers,

Joanne

Hi there,

Crazy as it seems the extra boys vocalising will help.

My boxes are 250x250x280

The extra depth and size makes such a difference.

The nest boxes they sell in shops are rediculous and are not suitable at all.

No wonder the birds think a clutch of two is appropriate for the box size.

Give me some room for god sake!

Cheers

Pat

Not real good at this but here goes.

This picture is of the my birds as they were being paired up on March 1st.

A number of spare cock birds remain in the bird room to help with vocalising!

Hi Just wondering - it is better for the birds to see each other with the wire cages? Some advice I've had suggests not to do this - but after reading your journal I wonder.

Also, where can I find 'Daz's nesting box design'?

I really enjoyed reading through your journal. Thanks for that.

Cheers,

Joanne

Hello all,

My nest no. 19 has surprised me by hatching all 6 off their 6 eggs!

They are a Ken Yorke Darkwing Hen x K. Kakoshke Black Eyed Yellow Cock bird.

I hope they are up to the feeding demands.

So far so good!

Cheers

Hi GB,

To be honest I am following Ken Yorke's suggestion for this pairing to achieve Darkwings.

I will need to check my notes as to what the breakdown should be,or otherwise someone else might oblige?

Hi GB

I thought I had some info courtesy of Ken Yorke on mating Darkwings.

Cheers

Patrick

Typical mating is Cinnamon Blackeyed yellow cock x Darkwing(sf) Yellow Hen (NB remember that almost all black eyed yellows are also cinnamon in Australia)

=25% Cinnamon Black-eyed yellow hens (the exhibition black eyed yellow)

25% Cinnamon Darkwing(sf) yellow hens (yellow bird with brown markings)

25% Blackeyed yellow / Cinnamon cocks (the older style black eyed yellow without the cinnamon, now exhibited as Suffused Yellows)

25% Darkwing(sf) Yellow/ Cinnamon cocks (suffused Yellow bird with dark grey-black markings)

or

Cinnamon Blackeyed yellow cock x Darkwing(df) Yellow Hen

=

50% Cinnamon Darkwing(sf) yellow hens (yellow bird with brown markings)

50% Darkwing(sf) Yellow/ Cinnamon cocks (suffused Yellow bird with dark grey-black markings)

Once you have some darkwing cocks you can mate darkwing to darkwing to increase numbers and also breed some double factored darkwings:-

Darkwing(sf) Yellow cock x Darkwing Yellow hen

=25% Black eyed Yellow (the old suffused yellow)

50% Darkwing(sf) Yellow (dark grey-black markings)

25% Darkwing(df) yellow (near black markings)

The reason we tend to breed darkwing yellow to Blackeyed yellow is to keep the body colour as yellow as possible. Sometimes if you continually breed darkwing yellow to darkwing yellow the body colour gets a bit suffused (more greenish)

Hi all,

Pleased to say my nest no. 7 which produced 7 chicks last round have hatched their first chick of the second round this morning.

This pair are a White Lacewing Hen x Normal Grey Cock bird.

There are only 5 eggs this time round so I would be happy for it to be a small clutch to take the preassure off them both.

Cheers

Hi all,

This is a picture of my last chick to leave its parents after round one.

Round two is underway and I have 11 new chicks in the nest.

I would like it to be over asap as Spring will be here before we know it!

Cheers

Patrick

very cute patrick!

i have a question thoguh what are you going to do with all of these 63+ chicks ??? lol

that is a lot of chikcs to deal with, and where are they now, still in breeding cages with parents?

and why do you want to finish before spring? is this mating season again???? or is it because you just dont want to mate then?

Hi AB,

All the chicks from this last round have left their parents and are in large stock cages holding on average eight chicks a cage.

I have them in the birdroom where they can get use to the noise and activity and not be spooked by people.I am also beginning to get some of the better chicks use to the show cage for the future.

Mi intention was to have one round in March/April and start again in the Spring which coincides with both many of the birds breeding cycle and the issue of the club rings for 2011.

So not to over work the parents I have now decided to take another round now while it's working and breed my remaining pairs and outcrosses in the Spring.

My plan is to keep the chicks I have bred long enough to assess their true potential.Which will probably mean having a member of the club visit my shed and help cull which is not worth keeping.

Cheers

Hi all,

Just wanted to share with you one of my favorite birds at the moment.

It's a Clearbody Opaline Grey Green Cock bird that I acquired at an auction recently.

I hope to use him in my Spring breeding season if not before.

I love the colour!

Hi all,

Sunday for me means a bigger clean up than is possible during the week and stocking up on seed etc.

There are now 17 chicks in the nest from this second round with a number of eggs still to hatch.

I'd be happy with smaller clutches this time round to make it easier on both the birds and myself!

Hi all,

Five chicks hatched today which is great.

One was actually coming out of the shell when I arrived home tonight.

Great stuff indeed!

You have truly had some good results eh Patrick :)

Hi Kaz,

I hope you are well!

To be honest I wouldn't know what is the norm, but yes loving the new chicks!

That's the great thing about the forum in being able to assess what everyone else does.

I've also been visiting a few local breeders here in S.A. to get an idea of what thay do with their birds.

It's so varied which is great!

Cheers

Hi Jo,

They're a bit spoilt at the moment, as I have been giving the baby spinach which is way too expensive from the shop.I've just bought some raised veggies beds so I hope to grow my own in the near future.

They get carrot and beetroot every morning mixed with soaked hulled oats, striped sunflower and wheat.I top that with a couple of Dr Rob Marshalls supplements.

It's occured to me that there's a similarity to what we do and the huamn fitness industry in building up our birds.

Hope that's a help!

Cheers

Patrick

Can't wait for your cull Patrick, sounds like we could pick up some nice birds :)

Thanks for that. Grow your own is definitely the way to go - for us and them. I read about a nasty experience one of our top WA breeders had with shop bought broccoli - too many pesticides - so I'm definitely on the organic and self-grown path. I take your point re human fitness industry...

Thanks for that,

Cheers,

Jo
