Plastic Nest Boxes

Does anyone have any experience with Plastic nest Boxes??? Also does anyone know of a local manufacturer??? (anywhere in Australia), i know of a supplier in the UK, but because they are plastic and cant be flatpacked, frieght will be massive.

I have seen some on the shelves of a pet/bird place here....kitform assembly with the ability to flatpack once out of the box. In the box not such a small package either.

BUT they were expensive and the nestbox sizes werent right for the suggested bird species. That is...the weiro or cockatiel size was more suited to our budgies.

i remember a post with discushion in it in 2008 late dec or mabe jan 2009 carnt remember who but some one on here was going to get some

my only thing with them is the heat would not stay in my opinion i think the plastic would get cold easy

with the hen leaving nest to eat ect

but i dont know that for a certainty just a thought on it

Here is the one of a size that would suit a show budgie ( sold as a tiel box ) and they are made in italy. $20.25 on the shelf at our local pet supply shop.

By The Way I bought one to trial.

be sure to let us know the rezults as i thought plastic was good idea to keep bugs away but heat ,....m well tell us what happens kaz

So it looks like you could use the lid to keep the mother from coming back into the box while you are checking. Not a bad idea.

Its a very good feature :( I have just gone and fitted it to a cage. It easily clips on for use. Will put a pair in there later in the week or when it gets cooler, whichever comes first

This is a good feature, too. I have been struggling with the cup hooks, and then I needed to wedge in some shims, to keep it straight. I think I'll check out that website and see if they are available in the U.S. :)

I know that plastic nest boxes are popular in Europe because they are easy to clean and long-lasting but not sure how they would fare in the heat ... :)

Maybe in Europe there is more indoor breeding, due to cold winters, like my situation. Then temperature might not be an issue. I'm sure Kaz will let us know how it works out when she uses hers- I can't wait to hear! :hi:

I couldn't see why you couldn't drill some ventalation holes like in are wooden boxes if they sweat to much ;)

In regards to plastic nest boxes, whenever they are discussed the issue of heat always seems to come up. Kaz, seeing as you now have one, is it possible measure the temp in the plastic one and one of your wooden ones, placed in a similar situation? This would then give us an answer based on fact and not speculation. I guess you'd have to wait until you have a hen on eggs in the new box as without a thermal source (ie the hen) both nests would just be at ambient air temperature.

Aside from being easier to clean I suspect they could also be less susceptible to red mite.

well my dad used pot plants with his own wooden lid atatched i just laughed ;) at him :D  :hap:

mabe he wasnt so silly after all :)

This the one I've used and had good results with. It's a Hagen Vision.

I've seen this one on the internet, and wondered what the design was like. So you like the features on it, it's convenient? I did a search for Marchioro U.S., and found lots of items, but none of them was Kaz's nest box. I so far have only found those on their European site.

DF, I'm guessing that in Canada, you don't have the heat issues they would be having in Australia. But do you have cold issues? Does it stay warm well enough?

I saw a few different sized ones of these today when I was at The Bird and Fish Place in Wattle Grove - the nest boxes suited to budgies are tiny!! This one is a much better size for them. I was actually going to get some Ivermectin to refill my supply from Tim Oldfield and thought I'd detour to the Bird and Fish place to see if there was anything new.

I spoke to Jeff Attwood about plastic boxes years ago, he had some made and was trying them out. I decided to do the same, but I only had one made, I tried it for a couple of seasons but found it got too wet in our central Victorian climate. I tried drilling holes in it, placing it in different locations inside/outside the cage, on the top box the bottom box ect but eventually decided to give up on the idea unless I moved to a cooler climate. I would prefer if possible to experiment with disposable [maybe cardboard] design. Clearwing

Finnie...my birds are all indoors so I m able to control the temp and we don't have any issues with humidity here...it's always dry. It's nice and versatile as you can put the opening and perch on either side and it mounts both inside or outside of the cage...hooks onto horizontal bars easily. And being plastic, it's easy to clean and sterilize between uses. There is a clear plastic insert that fits nicely into the bottom so quick and simple to do any nest box cleaning een when in use with chicks.

Kaz...it measures 9 inches long, 7 inches tall and 6 inches across. Whaat size do you use for show budgies? I think I paid 11 canadian dollars for it. If you can't find it and want to try one, I don't mind shipping one to you.

That's not a bad price at all. I think I will order one to try, and also keep looking for one like Kaz's. I'm hoping to put down 7 pairs in September, so I will be needing 4 more boxes, at least. :D

Here is a link or two on cardboard breeding boxes, I might it is ago too as gee think of it (I clutch finished just throw away and put a clean one in).

But I do wonder if budgies chew more than cockatiels :P

I know this site is for finches but still gives an idea how to make and fold a nest box from cardboard, and seems I have done similar things when I did my diploma I am going to give this nest box idea a go, I will need to source out the carboard but I also have an idea where to get that too.

When and if I do make a couple I will post them up to show you.

heres the link to the one I am talking about

I've made cardboard nest boxes out of packing boxes (good solid thick cardboard). I reinforce the entry hole with wood and there were no chewing issues at all. I use a removable concave insert which can be re-used but otherwise I love the disposable factor of cardboard boxes which can be made to watever size you desire (provided you have the right sized boxes to start working with).
