Posted October 27, 200915 yr Hi everyone Can you please answer a question in regards to putting spangle and opaline together! I put together a DF yellow spangle hen with a cobolt opaline cock! I got 4 babies from the pair! 2 grey green spangle and 2 grey spangle, the problem with the babies is they look like they are carrying opaline markins as well. Why is it that some of the babies look more like spangle's and the others look like they are more spangle opaline's http://i230.photobucket.com/albums/ee279/p...nebabies002.jpg http://i230.photobucket.com/albums/ee279/p...nebabies001.jpg I know that the phots are not the best sorry but the wont sit still here is there dad http://i230.photobucket.com/albums/ee279/p...W1606069002.jpg The babies are not looking to bad at the moment, for just under 4 weeks! Fingers crossed Edited October 27, 200915 yr by pippi pictures changed to link as they were not edited to 480 by 640 before posting
October 27, 200915 yr That's becaus eopaline is sex linked. With oplaine cock and non opaline hen YOU GET 50% Split Opaline Cocks 50% Opaline hens And because you used a Df Spangle and opaline Cock all birds will be spangle Actually they all look opaline spangle to me so are they all hens Edited October 27, 200915 yr by splat
October 27, 200915 yr the grey in fount looks normal spangle ??? but splat is correct with the out come of your pairings expectations but cant you also get normal hens (spangle of course )?
October 27, 200915 yr The cocks will will normal spangle GB but split for opaline and the hens will be opaline spangle
October 27, 200915 yr Cant a DF spangle hen mask if she is opaline ? yes kaz she can .. but i was sure when you put a opaline cock to a normal or spangle you can get normal hens not just opaline as well as opaline only diffrents being that the hen being a df spangle will give all spangle chicks so thats the easy part cocks are all split yes i knew this but i swear you could get a normal spangle hen as well as opaline hens as mum is not sex linked ....unless kaz is right and mums masking opaline in which case all chickswill be opaline spangle cocks and hens am i really wrong about the normal or spangle(forget the mutation ) to a opaline cock being normal hens opaline hens and split cocks ????

I thought that if the cock was opaline, that meant he has two genes for opaline (Xo), and therefore 100% of his hen chicks will get the opaline gene, and 100% of his cock chicks would be split for it ? (And maybe showing for it if they get one from their mother, too?) Splat, why do you say 50%, and everyone is agreeing, so I must have it wrong
October 27, 200915 yr Splat is saying every clutch is 50% cock and 50% hen. But due to the genes of the cock, all hens will be opaline and all cocks will be split opaline (not counting any other mutations). So what splat should of said is 100% cocks split opaline and 100% opaline hens, but given the 50/50 chance of having a male or female in a nest it was written "50% cocks split opaline, 50% opaline hens" So the DF spangle dad means all chicks will be single factor spangle on top. So the cocks will all be SF spangle split opaline and the hens will all be opaline spangle. Edited October 27, 200915 yr by Dean_NZ
October 27, 200915 yr My question is................If df can mask opaline as well as anything else, then the df dad could also be an opaline and there by it changes the fact that all opaline babies would be hens.....because two opaline pparents could have all opaline chicks ......male and female ..............right ?My question is................If df can mask opaline as well as anything else, then the df dad could also be an opaline and there by it changes the fact that all opaline babies would be hens.....because two opaline parents could have all opaline chicks ......male and female ..............right ? October 27, 200915 yr He could very well be masking or split for opaline, but while some chicks look op spangle, there is definately a plain spangle in there that i can see.
October 27, 200915 yr Well actually some of my DF spangles cocks even hen would be masking cinnamon and opaline, Yes that's what I ment what Dean said

I agree, the Grey in the front looks Normal and therefore a cock. So, the DF Spangle mum would NOT be masking Opaline if the Spangle Grey is not Opaline.
October 27, 200915 yr He could very well be masking or split for opaline, but while some chicks look op spangle, there is definately a plain spangle in there that i can see. Maybe, maybe not. Are you aware that a lot of opaline spangles now are coming out with normal markings as well on the wings. If you mean the grey spangle in the photos..........higher up the wing is showing opaline markings. Here are some of my opaline spangles with normal wing markings too

Here are some of my opaline spangles with normal wing markings too Kaz, i'm a bit confused as to what you mean by "Normal wing markings" in yours above. As far as I can see they all have the typical green Opaline markings through the wings, faded head markings and also have Spangle markings, making them Spangle Opalines. In the grey from the original picture it is quite different from it's Spangle Opaline Grey sibling at the back of the shot in that it doesn't have any of the grey through it's wings. Also it's head markings are darker at the crown than the other Opalines. Edited October 28, 200915 yr by Daryl
October 28, 200915 yr I am talking about opalines that these days have the black edges to their feathers looking like a combination of normal and opaline...where in the past opalines had no black melanin through the edges of the feathers. Re the photos of those chicks....I am waiting for more and better photos. My point was just to say originally that a DF coiuld possibly be carrying opaline also when earlier posts by others assumed it wasnt. http://s14.zetaboards.com/Metro_Club/topic/420920/1/?x=30 Edited October 28, 200915 yr by KAZ

Aah, okay. I forgot to add, very nice looking babies you have there too

October 29, 200915 yr Getting back to the original question because some answers seem confusing and some have swapped the cock and the hen around All the female daughters of an opaline cock will be opaline All the chicks of a double factor spangle will be spangle If the double factor spangle hen is masking opaline all the chicks of both sexes will be opaline spangle If the double factor spangle hen is NOT masking opaline the female chicks will be opaline spangle & the male chicks will be spangle split for opaline Many opaline spangles have some black wing markings but anyone who is experienced with opalines can still see the difference
