Im after some help on Quails. I have one pair that have laid eggs and they hatched last week and I have 3 babies out of 6 die and Im not sure what has caused it. They where running around the cage with there parents with out a problem and eating off the ground. I dont know what else I can do, maybe someone out there has a better solution for me.

Thanks Geoff

Hi,

I also breed Chinese painted quails more know as King quails or Button..

Are the babies in a large avairy??? If so when they hatch you will need to seperate the mother and babies into another cage or put bricks around a corner with mess over it to keep mum and the babies in small space.

One reason for them dying is they are not able to maintain their body heat....they easily stray away from the mother get cold and quickly lose conscience. Thats why you should keep them close together large cage is a no no.... Also put a 40 watt coloured light for extra heat.

Where the babies bleeding at alll that died....They also could have been attacked by the father which is common.

Hope this helps

no the baby where not bleeding, and they are in the cage with both parents.

I have some old light globes there, so I will make up a heater box so they keep warm and see how I go with that.

Also put a 40 watt coloured light for extra heat.

All the globes that put out heat have been pulled off all shelves of all stores in Australia. Only energy saver globes can now be bought, and they do not throw out heat.

Yeah I Know....but here there are alot of small corner shops/ Convenience shops that still stock alot of the old globes

Well I have seperated the mum and babies into a smaller cage this morning and they seem to be going well in the small breeding cabinet.

Thanks for all you help there, its great to have a excellent forum for us breeder to get on and find things out.

The best way to breed king quails is in a large fish tank with lots of hay and soil. I have reared many quails to adulthood using this method, with little or no fatalities. I recomend marking each egg with a number and only letting the hen sit on 8 eggs. While I have heard cockbirds attacking the young is common, I have never experienced this untill the young are almost adults- with only the males being attacked. There are many problems associated with breeding quails in a large aviary with the young getting seperated from mum and dieing from the cold the most common, also mice and rat attacks are common. King quails are a great addition to a budgie aviary because they clean up all the husk left behind by other birds- but breeding in an aviary will not usally produce the best results. Anyway good luck because these little birds will bring great enjoyment!
