so i went to the unbroken caps show

when i arrived i was suprized that a few people had remembered me from the june auction up my way

so i felt a bit more at ease about rocking up alone ,everyone was great and very friendly also quiet happy to answer my at times rather silly questions

i had no idea how anything worked as it was my first real show

i was lucky enough to be shown a few great pointers from various different people in the fancy also got a few numbers id been after for a while along with the chance to meet some of the more experienced breeders in which Ive been wanting to meet for some time

you can really see the difference in the diffrent styles of breeding and the difference in size of alot of the birds

actually helped me more i think than going to a show with older birds as i got to see the quality and size of chicks being breed by many others and will beable to see these standed in my own show breed chicks helping me decide if my pairings were of good choise

i discussed with alot of diffrent breeders what chicks would go on in their opinion to become a worthy bird ,so i got lots of info on what to look for and what posably was going to be good as stock and what probbly shouldnt have been their which was only as size aparently over rides markings in these days

i also learnt that you can just rock up to a show and enter on the day sometimes and that even if your club doesnt go with a team you can enter yourself

i made a few new contacts and brought a book that i actually should have just keeped my money as i knew everything it said but hay good to have just cause i guess ,i also know to save for the next one as you can get lots of good needed things resanably priced if not at a bargon price

oh and i met some people from here... hi :D:P

well all in all its worth going to one show breeder or not

you will be welcomed and learn loads as i did meet a bunch of friendly chaps and drink coffee from foam cups :D

that concludes my day and i look forward to mabe having a bird on the bench next year if i learnt anything i say i will

I'm really glad you had such a good experience and met so many helpful people!

GB, if you're after something to give you genetic percentages, want something that's free and you can play all you want then I may have a solution: The Genetic Calculator. It's a web based application developed for many species of birds including budgerigars. Here's the address:

Genetic Calculator

Best just to spend some time playing with it to get the hang of it. However, two tips to get you started:

1. If you select nothing this is the equivalent of a Normal Light green. From here you add factors (eg Dark, Wing Variety, double factor etc) to build up the variety and colour you're after.

2. You will not see "cock' and "hen". Instead these are replaced by 1.0 and 0.1 respectively.

It generally works pretty well but I'm still unsure about the yellowface expectations

The 1.0 is the cock and the 0.1 is the hen.

Lacewing is given as cinnamon ino.

Yes I was thinking of going to the Easteren District show on the 25th October but no, the violet hasn't capped yet and the older ones are still molting . Geoff advised me that if I was to go, take the young birds from last year with the red rings the ones that I have been winning with but some are still in the breeding box and if I take them out they will go into a moult. So I guess I will have to wait until next year.
